In this video, we will again be reading from Harper Workman and Neil Currie’s 1924 unpublished manuscript, “Early History of Lake Shetek.” Workman and Currie came to Lake Shetek after the massacre, and they were interested in interviewing some of the survivors of the 1862 massacre, and creating a history for the present and future members of the community.
We will hear about the fate of some of the families who lived near Lake Shetek, but in even more isolated locations. This included the Brown family, as well as the family of Dutch Charley, whose real name was Carl Zierke. He had come to the area in 1858 and he lived about 16 miles west of Lake Shetek. This story tells of the terrible fate of these families in quite graphic detail, so, fair warning, if you are not in the mood to hear about some of the atrocities visited on these settlers
