I love how for his last labour, the one the other gods deemed impossible, he literally just went to the underworld and was like hey Hades can I borrow your dog? And Hades was just like yh that's chill, just don't hurt him XD Hades is so under rated what a legend
I LOVE hades!! Tbh. Though he isnt potrayed as a Good person. He was one of the most sensible people in greek myth. I mean. Atleast he thought Rationally😆😆
Although.... there was the case of him kidnapping and raping his niece Persephone (daughter of his brother Zeus and his sister Demeter). Which made Persephone his niece from both her Mother's and Father's side. But I agree that he does appear to be a pretty chill guy, for a dude handed the short end of the stick by his younger brother Zeus.
I love how Hera was the true villian & Hades was the real mvp of this story Disney decided to make it opposite way because everything related to underworld will always be the villain in American culture :/
idunno whats the hate with hades is all about......he seems like a fair dude.....atleast hes not banging as he pleases.....f disney for makin him look like a villan
Heracles might not have been the sharpest arrow in the quiver, but he had his moments. Cleaning the Augean stables, tricking Atlas, and his quip when the hind fled were pretty clever.
the twelve labors are not that great tbh, most of them are just beating up animals. i love greek myths but can't say i would be looking computer game of them
Funny how putting on clothing is what caused Heracles' death. No wonder he was depicted as naked throughout most of this video. It was a defense mechanism from poisoned clothing.
@@thecutieangels He did kill her but it depends on which version of the story because alot of greek stories have different variations from different poets.
@@GoofyCombat Yes, I’ve come to love Greek tragedies and their different versions. However I prefer the one where he didn’t kill her bc if that had happened we wouldn’t have Wonder Woman!!🦸🏻♀️
I was a big fan of the TV show as a kid and I loved Xena,as well. Those shows had a lot of fun with Greek myths and used other myths, too and they didn't slavishly adhere to Greek mythology too closely. They were great shows! Good times, indeed!
Dario Felix I understand this may be foreign to you, but it is possible for decent and humble people to feel joy at the success of others. Have a blessed day 😊
Heracles endured a hard & grueling life thanks to Hera, as stated before the gods are cruel, but I digress, these feats he accomplished took a high level of valor LONG LIVE HERACLES; THE GREATEST HERO OF ALL TIME
This is the ultimate coincidence. Just today I watched crash course mythology on this because I was wondering about this topic. Getting to hear about it here is awesome
oh ok so was he zeus son too or where they half brother I never heard of him is it kind of like Heracles is the brawn of and his twin brother is the brain
I think another good lesson that you can learn from Heracles is redemption. Not redemption in other people's eyes, no to the person it really matters yourself. Through his labors Heracles was able to process and accept his crimes. He gave up himself to a higher cause and thus he was able to live without the constant guilt of his actions.
@@awesomesavagepossumcabbage5844 actually, both went crazy at some point and both has serious issues and they are evil if you look back at the trojan war.
@@chancycat9822 ahem, Hera had this evil plan of strangling her husband to gain the throne, was selfish and threw Hephaestus off a mountain, punched Artemis in the face in the trojan war, and much, much more. Athena also went crazy in the trojan war, breaking the trust with the Greeks, shot his own brother Ares, made Posiden angry because she decided to take something that isn't hers, and MUCH more. If I look at the Male gods? Nothing.
It's strange how his redemption for killing his family had a lot of killing, brute strength and stealing in it. Not to mention he had help in almost all of them from other gods
This was so interesting! I know quite a bit about the labors but I've never heard about Heracles having a twin brother. Or much of what you said about his early life. Great video!
Heracles was the greatest and strongest hero that ever lived, my Yia Yia(grandmother) always told me stories of Heracles when I was young, he has always been my favourite hero in history.
This was a really good video, I feel like there were parts of story were abridged such as with Nessus the centaur ferryman. After carrying Deianeira, the wife of Heracles, across the river, Nessus attempted to force himself upon her. Heracles saw this from across the river and shot a Hydra-poisoned arrow into Nessus's breast. As he lay dying, as a final act of malice, Nessus told Deianeira that his blood would ensure that Heracles would be true to her forever, knowing the blood to be infected with the hydra's poison.
As always, it was a pure enjoyment watching your video and I really appreciate your sensible and straight-thinking analyses of each character. It’s one thing to read a story and another to dig much deeper into the roots and causes of the events depicted. Thank you☺️
The 12 labors are symbolic (like all the Greek mythology) the first labor killing the lion of Nemea symbolises our fight with anger, and so the other 11 labors symbolises something else that can describe because my English are bad,but you can look for your self. When a human complete his/her 12 labors he becomes "god".
HERCULES and the biblical SAMSON are the same archetype. Examples: Hercules’ first labor-kill a lion Samson’s first feat-kill a lion Hercules captures the hind Samson captures 300 foxes Hercules betrayed by wife Deianara Samson betrayed by lover Delilah Hercules had his 12 labors, while Samson was judge over 12 tribes. Samson’s name means “sun, bright sun” so he is a solar figure. In the story, he plays the role of the sun, going through symbolic acts of each Zodiac sign-his own “12 labors”. The last two were Aquarius and Pisces. His lover’s name, Delilah, who betrayed him, means water-pot, and is the Hebrew word for Aquarius. Thus, Samson the sun, is made to wane in Delilah/Aquarius, and the power of his rays (hair) is cut off. After this, he is brought to the feast of Dagon, the Philistine fish god, correlating with Pisces. By pushing against two pillars, Samson brings down the whole temple on both the Philistines and himself-crucifixion of the sun, to save his 12 tribes. One other similarity between Hercules and Samson-They were both really swoll, and were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs. ...I guess that makes sense, if you consider the sperm of Zeus/Yahweh to be a performance-enhancing drug.
A true Neanderthal-like hero. A hero whose fists not his brains... held sway on earth for a time. Not unlike Enkidu, friend of Gilgamesh, or Cain and Able. These myths come with memories that remind us of what are as human beings and to whom we own allegiance in the end. "Created in the image and likeness of...... ", indeed. Who are the great heroes of our time? What does it mean: to admire? Great job. Thanks.
Thank you!!! I couldn't get over the way Riordan or DC comics have been writing him. One of my fav all time Heroes definitely needs better recognition nowadays!
gavin charles Hercules isn't mentioned that often in Riordan's novels? Unless he plays a bigger roles in his Apollo series, as I haven't read the last two. And DC has a Hercules too? I know Marvel does.
Hercules killed Wonder Woman’s mom lol. DC should make Hercules a character and add this to the story. He could be like an anti hero/villain, which would be an interesting take. He doesn’t have to kill her but he could be an enemy of the Amazons...Have they done this already ? EDIT: NVM they have already did this exact thing lol
They have the Greek Gods but Hercules (and Thor for that matter) are huge cunts and usually cause trouble for the Amazons. The Marvel versions are much better, tbh.
I love how you place your ads in all your vids bro. It's like during a pause, and not mid sentence like a heap of other youtubers lol thank you. P.s nice content man!
Greetings from London UK. Great videos! This has been my favourite thus far because it is the first story-like vid I've listened to by you. Hopefully there are more!
Lololz I think you did awesome...the only way u could completely cover his life would probably be if u made a movie...and even then. Plus u mentioned that there'd be other vids with him so I think everyone should be appeased
In the story of the golden apple's, there lived 5 girls daughter's of Atlas. 1 of the daughter's liked Heracles, so she decided to help him, she told Heracles how to trick her father Atlas into helping with his quest. After that the daughter of Atlas left her home for she had betrayed her father. Then when Heracles retold the story he only mentioned 4 sister's and said it was his idea of triking Atlas, leaving out the girl who had given up her life with her family and being banished from her home just to help him.
I love listening to your videos, they are so relaxing to listen to. I knew of someof his labors but I didn't remember the details due to it being such a long time since I've read of Hercules
The damn Oracle of Delphi as superbly portrayed in 300 was always trusted to give direction but bribed or drugged to mislead to an alternative fate was the reason for many great hero tales.
Heracles was a strong kid that turned into an asshole. But after realizing his assholeness,Life(the Gods) brought challenges in front of him so he can cleanse his soul from sins and furies and become qualified to sit next to Gods in the afterlife..Hercules also represents the stoic and later monastic way of thinking we find in oriental religions..Very good video in deed.
I had heard another version where Herakles, evidently still having some hydra-dipped arrows remaining, fured them blindly over the wall to kill Ladon before climbing over and retrieving the apples. There's also a version where he didn't trick Atlas, he asked. To which Atlas was like "sure thing. Hold this." Herakles held the sky with Athena's help while Atlas was gone.
When are u do a gonna do a video on african myth? I would really love a video on one of the yoruba orishas or the vodou loa like Papa Legba. The only problem you'd face i guess would be finding really good fan art like you do for most videos
This would be incredible to make into a souls like rpg. I could only imagine fighting the creatures he fights in an incredible and epic battle. A game where he starts out mostly human and towards the end becomes much more godlike in ability. One where with the limitations of a human starting out, grows and learns how to use his untapped godlike strength to eventually complete all 12 of the incredible labors. I could see this being very well adapted into a souls like RPG.
Dear Mythology and fiction explained, May you please make videos explaining who the Amazon’s were? May you please include a video explaining about the Orin’s of hypollita and other famous Amazonian warriors? Thanks!
Hades: My dog Cerberus cannot be tamed by any mere mortal! Hercules: Hey Uncle, can I borrow the dog? Hades: Yea don't do anything to him or it's your head! Hercules: *completes it with no problem* Hades: Huh.....okay
Fate/Stay Night's interpretation of Heracles remains the coolest, dude fucking killed the Hydra by shooting at it with his bow with 9 almost simultaneously strikes
Heracles is a star constellation and the 12 labours of Heracles is an allegory for the zodiacal constellations which represent a 360 degree map of the cosmos.
My friend! Here in Greece we go through a second carantene in response to C19 outbreak. Your videos keep me and my family company everyday! Very neat work. We love the musical background you choose as well. Keep safe!!
I laughed when he said Hera's milk sprayed everywhere and the ancient Greeks and Romans believed that Hera's milk sprayed across the heavens making the galaxy
I was going to ask for this exact video. I have heard of most of his 12 labours of Hercules but not all and never the details of them so I absolutely love this one. Great job sir.
CORRECTION: Hercules actually had 13 labors (claimed to be his final labor). He went to go challenge the ghost of sparta for the title of god of war. For once, the spartan actually tried to spare Hercules, as he did not want this fight. But with deaf ears, Hercules did not take his warning. The battle was intense and fierce, the battle of brute strength. However, the spartan overpowered hercules' strength, even using his own weapon against him. In the final moments, Hercules literally lifts the arena, hoping to send the spartan to fall to his death. However, the spartan quickly overcame the obstacle, and made the whole arena collapse on top of Hercules, which then the Spartan finshed him off by punching his face severely to death. And in that moment, the once former champion died in the hands of the ghost of sparta. Please don't take the comment serious 😂
It's hilarious to me that Hercules is most often shown in art as nearly or fully naked. As if headed out to battle he tossed on a lion skin headdress/cloak, gauntlets, and sandals, but leaves the remainder of his body completely unprotected. This is apropos of nothing, but still funny to me. It's as if he were a big, dumb jock who wants his muscles visible to the ancient ladies while he was mucking out the stables and what not...lol.
Yeah...Greek art. One version, old and largely forgotten, cited that he was not only super strong and coordinated, but invulnerable. In that version, he relinquished his invulnerability so that he could bear risk and prove his badass worthiness. That might support the notion of using little more armor than his trophy, the super-tough hide of the Nemean lion, as armor. Remember, only it's own claws could pierce it; he had to break its neck to kill it.
