Herbert Chapman is one of the most important figures in football history. He was a man years ahead of his time, introducing many things into football that are now commonplace, as well as taking the likes of Huddersfield and Arsenal to the top of the game.

Chapman's Arsenal was one of the best teams in Europe in the 1930s along with Juventus, Bologna, Ambrosiana, Austria Vienna, Ferencvaros, Ajax and Atletico Bilbao

They would surely have won a european cup had it been about then, had he survived it could well have come in sooner

@@afcfinners There was a sort of european competition back then, the Mitropa Cup,established in 1927. It was contested by italian, austrian, czech and hungarian teams. Club football in these countries was considered the best in Continental Europe. The most successful in the 1930s within the competition were Bologna and Austria Vienna, with two titles each. Ferencvaros also had a great participation with 1 title and 3 more finals, its star was Gyorgi Sarosi, among the greats of that generation. I think the best league was the Italian one with 3 strong teams, Juventus, Bologna and Ambrosiana (currently Inter). A game by Arsenal against any of them or Austria Vienna of the iconic Sindelar would be interesting. Italy overall was the most successful national team of the decade with 2 World Cups, 2 Central European Championships in 1930 and 1935 and the 1936 Olympic gold medal in Berlin. Interesting that, as you may know, Italy and England faced each other in a friendly match in November 1934 in the famous 'Battle of Highbury' in London, at Arsenal's Stadium and with 7 players from the team. The pitch was flooded and several players sustained injuries from tackles.Ted Drake and Eric Brook scored the goals in the English victory by 3x2, Meazza scored the two Italian goals. Mussolini allegedly promised an Alfa Romeo car to each player in case of victory. There it is,a good idea for a video, talking about this game. A match that solidified England's belief, among the public and press, that they were the best, having defeated the newly laureate world champions. This sentiment can also be seen in another iconic game between Wolverhampton and the hungarians of Honved in 1954 when the local press declared Wolves the best team in Europe. Another fascinating story suggestion from football folklore is the alleged curse cast by the iconic coach Bela Guttmann, who started Eusebio's career, against Benfica. I really like your videos. Greetings my friend

I believe it was Mr. Chapman also who lobbied for the Gillespie Road tube station to renamed "Arsenal", to further highlight the club's presence.

I totally enjoyed this video. I have been to Herbert Chapman‘s grave on St Mary’s church, Hendon and his former home also in Hendon that has a blue heritage plaque on it. The only thing I would tweak in your Video is using Arsenal’s Art Deco crest of when Chapman was manager in your thumbnail,as the current corporate crest is from 2002. Thanks for making this video.

Hi mate, glad you enjoyed, good on you paying your respects, I’ll have to visit that at some point myself. I see what you mean regarding the crests, but I’m just not sure if people would recognise the crests if I did it for every club but I’ll have a think. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment

@@afcfinners Thanks! The Arsenal fans will recognise The 1930s crest. If you visit Herbert‘s grave at St Mary’s then also local are the graves of former Arsenal manager Tom Whittaker and Barnsley FC founder Father Tiverton Preedy both buried in Islington & St Pancras cemetery in East Finchley which is only a 10-15 mins drive from Hendon. Be sure to call into the office there as they’ll kindly print you off a location map as it’s huge in there.

In every sporting activity theres an animal or someone who transcends the sporting field; doing things which have never been seen before they come once in a while and I can say this was such a person.

He was directly or indirectly responsible for so much of what is common in today's game. What a man ahead of his time, and taken too soon. Thanks for telling it so well Finners! Like, comment, and subscribe to support the channel everyone.

Great video. One slight error though. Clem Stephenson was a forward not a defender

It's a bit of a stretch to say football was in its infancy in the 1920/1930s. In terms of crowd attendance, at least, this was football's golden era.
