People didnt really count the gods when it comes to incest. Sure, In ancient greek times, Incest was taboo, but they didn't count the gods. They just arnt, well, human.
Both are wrong though. It is Heracles, as it's the greek version. But yea it's an amazing movie. I might be a greek mythology nerd, but this is my favorite disney movie :D
@@BearSmoothie Haha I know. It's VERY inaccurate. Doesn't diminish the greatness of the movie. I just like to find the artistic liberties they have taken
When you think about it, the dull sounding guy might’ve told Heracles’ story more accurately (His story is quite tragic and gruesome) Then the Muses jump in to make it more upbeat and fun.
Back then, the staff was paid to do research. This whole film is just one big greek theatre play. See it again and watch how they make each scene transaction like a theater play
Quite literally where the theatrical saying “He plays the role of The Greek Chorus” comes from. The “Greek Chorus” being any character in the story whose job is to break the fourth wall and deliver exposition directly to the audience. The muses are a literal Greek Chorus.
Sir. Knowsalot it’s not impossible to relate to someone outside ur race. But it’s more common to relate to someone in ur race because in some races they go through the same things
@Sir. Knowsalot Take it easy there, bucko. I don't think that's what they were saying at all. The Muses, being who and what they were in this film, were a prime bit of representation at a time where (and still now actually) there weren't a lot of black women featured prominently, or positively in animated film/animation in general. At least in the United States.
Yeah, in the real story, Hercules was constantly hunted down by Hera just for existing, and he consistently killed people on accident with his brute strength and short fuse. The real Meg and her kids with Herc were killed by him while he was in a fit of madness caused by Hera. Pretty tragic to me.
Right, many of Disney movies that take from something else aren’t accurate to the original source material... like... almost all of them. Don’t get it mixed up with a fresh new idea though.
Calliope (voiced by Lillias White) is the muse of epic poetry. She leads the muses and is the tallest of the five with high hair. Clio (voiced by Vanéese Y. Thomas) is the muse of history. She has a small ponytail and carries a scroll. Thalia (voiced by Roz Ryan) is the muse of comedy. She is the shortest of the five, very fat, plays a trumpet, and is often causes mischief. Terpsichore (voiced by LaChanze) is the muse of dance. She is the second-shortest of the five, with frizzy hair. She is the only muse that has ever come in contact with Hercules teaching him how to dance in "Hercules and the Muse of Dance". Melpomene (voiced by Cheryl Freeman) is the muse of tragedy. She has long, curly hair to her waist and carries a mask with a frowning face
If you're a natural hair fan, you know that: *Melpomene had a blowout *Terpsichore had Bantu knots and a twist-out *Clio had a half-up half-down topknot *Calliope had a roller set, and....well, Thalia's still relaxed lmfao😂😂😂😂😂
You are totally right. Without the Muses or the songs it would just be lifeless and boring and I reckon the songs help you get into the movie as well. The Muses and songs are awesome.
Fun fact: according to mythology when the titans ruled the planet there was peace and serenity in the human world. When the Olympic Gods began their ruling because they were modeled after the mere human they had flaws and made mistakes.
I think "history" is overstating the case here...Anyway there's a simple explanation: if you were telling the story of Zeus, and like the muses you had to deal with him as a(n angry, thunderbolt-hurling) part of your life, wouldn't you want to stay on his good side?
JamaicanCastle Pocahontas is a historical figure, as were the other main characters of that film. That film butchered the events that actually happened. "History" is not overstating it, though the dude may have mixed up mythology with history.
[NARRATOR, spoken] You go girls... [CALLIOPE, spoken] We are the muses Goddesses of the arts And proclaimers of heroes [TERPSICHORE, spoken] Heroes like Hercules [THALIA, spoken] Honey you mean Hunk-ules! Woohoo, I'd like to make some sweet music- [CALLIOPE, spoken] Our story actually begins long before Hercules Many eons ago (sung) Back when the world was new The planet earth was down on its luck And everywhere gigantic brutes called Titans ran amok [THALIA] It was a nasty place! There was a mess where ever you stepped [CALLIOPE] Where chaos reigned and earthquakes and volcanoes never slept [THALIA, spoken] Woo! Sing it girlfriend [ALL MUSES] But then along came Zeus! [CALLIOPE] He hurled his thunderbolt [ALL MUSES] He zapped- [CALLIOPE] Locked those suckers in a vault [ALL MUSES] They're trapped- And on his own stopped chaos in its track And that's the gospel truth The guy was too type A to just relax! [TERPSICHORE] And that's the world's first dish [THALIA, spoken] Yeah, baby [MELPOMENE] Zeus tamed the globe while still in his youth [ALL MUSES] Though honey it may seem impossible That's the gospel truth! On Mt. Olympus life was neat And smooth as sweet vermouth Though honey it may seem impossible That's the gospel truth
I'm more modest with the fancast. Ester Dean as Thalia, because she's a comedian, Teyana Taylor as Terpsichore, because she's a good dancer, Janelle Monae as Clio, because she appeared in a period movie (Hidden Figures), Kelly Rowland as Melpomene because she can make some incredibly sad music, and for Calliope, since the requirement is to have pipes, there's way too many possible additions to count.
I swear my VHS version didn't have those seizure frames and reused the bit with their hands out in front. Very jarring to see it on the Disney+ version
In the original myth Hercules was not Hera's child, he was a mortal's, making him a demi-god. Hera loathed him for that reason, so she tried to kill him numerous times when he was a baby. Zeus sent him down to Earth, concerned for his safety. Of course they had to change some things about the myth to turn it into a movie. It needed to be suitable for children, like any other Disney movie.
Herakles also wasn't his birth name, he changed it to hopefully win Hera's affection, however this caused the opposite as she was infuriated by the insult of having Zeus' bastard son taking on and supposedly dishonoring her name.
myvampirediary1 Hera was a bit of a crazy jelous bitch. But Zeus gave her plenty of just reason to be so. What I hate is how she always took it out on the kids he had and the women he seduced rather than the pig that cheated!
***** Hera was just fed up of her man (Who also was her youngest brother) not knowing to keep it in his pants. 90% of all problems in Greek Myths stem from a god (70% of the time Zeus) not being able to keep it in their pants. Kinda sad that the goddess of family and faithfulness had the most unfaithful husband in the entire mythology. Adding up to that was the fact gods can't harm each other, so she had no choice but to take it out on the women and children who often were raped and byproducts of rape.
Aaron Brimacombe Learning so much from these comments xD I was quite obsessed with greek myth as a kid, but aparantly kids learning books never contain the really juicy and gruesome versions ^_^

I swear the most iconic thing about this entire movie are the muses. This is one of the few TV shows that I don't care that it's inaccurate as Swiss cheese. The writing and the music are just fantastic
personally, i'd rather listen to these ladies more than Ariana Grande, One Direction, Justin Bieber and the rest of the famous 2014 people we call "singers"
when you actually know the facts of Greek mythology but don't wanna ruin your childhood so you suppress your inner geek and just listen to the goodness that is this song
Antonio Brooks I doubt they would have the time. I'm sure egos would get in the way, they would be great since there's already five. But there's billions of people in the world let's see some new talent
Jordyn Grenville We should be grateful the movie wasn't accurate. Otherwise it'd be about Zeus turning into birds and raping/seducing (as though that's such a fine line) young mortal women.
I just realized their hieghts are like a hand in the order they line up, thumb, pointer, middle (tallest), ring finger, and pinky( not the smallest but isn't as tall as the ring finger)
People are sleeping HARD on this movie. This song tingles my brain exceptionally well. Like... music production wise, It's kinda this and the Lion king for me.
Even though I generally like listening to it in this movie, I do sometimes wonder why the folks at Disney thought Gospel music would be a good fit for a movie set in mythological Greek times.
+Red Dragon LOL, if there's something in that comment, it's that Ancient Greek literature preferred tragedy over comedy (heck, Heracles's life was one big traged, just by being Zeus's bastard). So yeah, *retcon* seems a more appropriate term...especially the toning down of Hera's original characterization (the original sender of the serpents towards the cradle, etc. etc. etc.)
