Here’s how the Buick Regal was both Grandpa’s car and a muscle car 

I still have my 1987 Grand National I bought new in Sept 1987 as a 27yo GM employee working at the GM Tech Center. Only 48K miles and garage kept its whole life. My dad had a 1975 Regal company car with the 350 Buick V8.

As a young adult my first car I bought was a1975 Buick Regal. Dark blue with white vinyl interior with matching landau roof chrome Buick rims with 2 in. Whitetail tires and chrome bumpers. Still in my top 3 cars ! Loved my Regal!

I loved the mid-1980's Grand Nationals, wanted one so bad but of course way beyond my means as a recent high school grad. I don't think the most recent Regals could be considered a failure of the car but more the victim of being an orphan that Buick really didn't care about because of the sale of Opel.

The mid 80’s normal Regals with the 3.8L were very smooth and quiet and very comfortable to drive. Not as quiet as my in laws Oldsmobile but still very quiet.

Pontiac Bonneville. Idk if you've already covered this car, but if you haven't that would be awesome. I had an '87 back in the early 2000s and it was a pretty good car 👍💯

My mom's cousin had one of these 87 Buick Grand National. It was the fastest car I've ever drove. I remember watching the speedometer go from 0 to 80 MPH in a split second and the car took off like a rocket. The turbocharged V6 definitely had more than 245 horsepower. Also gotta love hearing the turbo spool up and the tires squeak from first to second gear when I stomp down on the gas pedal.

The very first commercial shown features the Portland, Oregon, Columbia River Gorge areas, with the very recognizable St. John's bridge in the second scene shown. Quite pretty scenery from what Portland is today. I love my 94 Roadmaster Wagon (pictured for 1.2 seconds) and would love, love, love an 80's Grand National, too. Or a Reatta!

I remember being on vacation and traveling down south stopping at a hotel for the night. A Buick Grand National went by and being my wife is a car person I told her what it was and that they were very rare. Less than a minute another one went by and she pointed it out the me this time. Less than a minute in the hotel parking lot was full on Black Buick Grand Nationals. She couldn't let this one slip by, she said "I thought you told me they didn't make many Buick Grand Nationals". We still joke about it and that was in the early 1990's. Apparently there was a Buick Grand National Event being held where we were staying. Thank's Pat for another great video that I can relate to. By the way, I would never buy a Buick. LOL

The Toyota Rav4 deserves a vid because its the car that triggered the crossover craze and defined what a crossover is today, a transverse fwd car based lifted hatchback. Sorry outback fans. It doesnt count cuz the outback was a trim level of the legacy wagon. Not its own specific model.

Fun fact. The last gen W-Body Regal/Century was the last design attributed to Chuck Jordan, who was the GM design head during the 90s and had penned such awesome mid century designs as the 1959 Cadillac and the GM Electromotive Aerotrain.

Back in the late 90’s I briefly owned a 1987 Buick Regal Limited V8/4bbl carburetor. With its ultra plush leather seats that car was not only quiet, comfortable, and near silent; but also much faster than one would expect. Unfortunately the transmission was not up to the task of handling the power of the Oldsmobile V8 so transmission problems started occurring within a few months after I bought the car. To this day I still regret ever letting that one get away.

Back when I was working in a shop as a mechanic, I used to love seeing those FWD W-bodies come in! 80% of the time they needed rear struts, mounts, calipers, pads, and rotors (or CPR as we called it)

My dad owned an 86' Buick Regal in the early 90s.. It had tinted windows, lowered, small wire wheels and a really nice dark blue paint job. My dad was forced to sell it because cops kept pulling him over thinking he was a thug.

I live in Poland and i buyed 1990 Buick Skylark Sedan, This car is so forgotten that even parts from US are hard to get..and there's like only two videos about it on Polish RU-vid. Tho i would like to see it next. As noone will propably ask for it cuz y know..its forgotten

Keep in mind that both Groupe PSA and Fiat Chrysler are merge into Stellantis.... Also the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia/Buick Regal also sold as the last generation Holden Commodore until it's demise in 2019 and Holden as a whole by 2021

Grand national was one of the sweetest cars around.

My Grandma on my Dad's side had a 1987 Buick Regal in ear wax gold(that's what I call it). My Uncle got the car when she passed away and had it till the mid 2010's. Looking forward to a future video featuring The Buick Century, which I owned 2. A 1990 and a 1994.

The Regal GS 98' black , saved my life! I was hit by a train in front drivers fender/door by a train tossed 250 feet . Hour and a half later they freed me , i was in hospital for 3 months but only have nerve damage in left leg and was able to live a mostly normal life. Side note it was fast supercharged it would beat my friends 2002 mustang GT.

I built 3 69 GS clones in the 90's and early 00's and took those orphan 350's and put them in 79 Regal Turbo Coupes. Really easy swap, just had to put the 3.8 motor mounts on the 350 and use the Y pipe from the 350 which lined right up with the existing exhaust system. Definitely gave those regals some go power being a lighter G body than the A body Skylarks

I had a 97 regal GS and it is still one of my favorite cars I've ever owned. It drove nice, the interior was all leather and pretty fancy....and it was fast. Sadly it was stolen and crashed and I only had less than 2 yrs. It's damn near impossible to find one in good condition or I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Thank you for another great video. I enjoy the effort that you put in your videos. There was a Holden version of the Opel Insignia/Buick Regal. GM was considering bring the Holden Commodore here and selling it as a Regal at one point. They had a concept in 1995. It was called XP-2000. They also were thinking about bringing the Holden Statesman/Caprice here and selling here as a large Buick instead of the Lucerne. It did make it to China where it was sold as Buick Park Avenue. It did make it to the United States as the Chevrolet Caprice PPV.

The most reliable car Ive ever had was a 94 Regal Custom with the 3800. It could get 33 mpg highway and hit 60 in the 8 second range (0-40 it was a pure rocket thanks to the 3800s low end torque). It never had ANY major problems and its end was a rear end collision from a cherokee and it was still driveable. I took the insurance $. The regal (200k miles and 17 years old by then) went to copart where somebody bought it. Hope it had a restored life after. It was a great car.

Those 80’s Grand Nationals are badass.

It would have been nice to have a Regal made on the same platform as the Camaro. Make it more luxury oriented and the top engine a turbo 6 cylinder. I'm a true believer you need a flagship vehicle to bring customers into the showroom!

I have a 2012 Buick Regal GS. It's sporty, with a stick and turbo, and it looks great.

Mom got her her first new car in 1986, A Buick regal limited V8. I tried to get her to buy the GN on the lot but she didn't want black. Also my parents were not wild about a turbo or a V6 and always had V8's. I even tried to get her to get a T-type also since u could get other colors. But they didn't have any uplevel Limited package ones on lot. I was 10/11 by the way but knew the GN would be a great keeper. Mom garage kept the Limited and drove it daily until she passed away 2001. Dad kept it for a while after but keeping up with 4 vehicles and a boat was too much and a family friend who had been asking to buy it for years ended up getting his wishes. I miss my mom and her pride n joy

I traded my Saab 900 for a 1987 Buick T-Type, black with the gray interior. The dealer was marking up the Grand Nationals by $5,000 so I opted for the T-Type. I modified the suspension, air intake, fuel pump, exhaust, down pipe and programming. I blew a head gasket after 10,000 miles but after the repair, I drove it to 140,000 miles before selling it. The dealer wouldn't cover the repair because of my modifications but I learned later that it was a flaw and probably not caused by the increased boost. My kids loved to see me in the car pool pick-up line with a car that was making the windows on school rattle. From a 50 mile an hour roll, it was downright spooky fast.

I currently have a Regal TourX and love it. It’s not as peppy as my previous Pontiac G8 GT, but I love it anyway.

I had Buick Regal GS turbo 2016.Bought it at Hertz Rent A car. I really loved the car until I had issues with the car.. I had a bad fuel sending unit. The second time it broke down was 2 bad cylinders which Buick said they would replace all 4. I had the extended warranty and I bought the car used with just under 50k miles.. That second break down.. my wife and I decided to cut our losses and trade it in.. We bought the new 2019 Buick Encore Sport.. which we love. ours to date only has 22,000 miles as we don't drive to far in it.

I REALLY wished that the TourX wagon survived...so cool! My father's first car was a 1978 LeSabre Custom sedan, I would love to see a video on the LeSabre!

That 3.8 in the first FWD model is the one we got here in Aus. Although Buick has rebalanced it for FWD over there, because it’s install into the VN Commodore was such a rush job (Holden had wanted to keep using Nissan’s inline 6) it was rough as guts in the early VNs. They eventually got is sorted and had become a good engine by the VS Ecotech model.

I maintained the name which got laughs from my friends but I loved it. It indeed had a very fast 3.8 engine minus the turbos. I still surprised many of V8s with that car. Good times. 😃

If you're going to continue with the Buick theme then I would love to see a video on the Riveria. One of the world's first vehicles with a touch screen...back in the 1980s! I bought a 1989 in 1997 which was the last year for the "Graphic Control Center" and people were amazed that the technology was around back then.

I had an '87 Turbo Regal with the T Package; It's the same thing as a GN but it was actually lighter because it featured 15" aluminum wheels v the 15" steel wheels on the GN. Funny how today, a 2021 Honda Odyssey is just as fast, stock, as the turbo regals were back in '87. In the T-Type and T-Package, you had more options than with the GN. YOu could have the plush bench seat, column shifter, and you could have chrome trim instead of the sporty blackout package. That made for some interesting combinations of the Limited (ultra-luxury version) with the turbocharged 3.8L SFI under the hood. Check out Dennis Kirban's guide to Turbo Regals for a comprehensive look into the TUrbo Regal as a whole, if interested.

The 2018 Tour X was beautiful. I was disappointed that GM didn't sell it in Canada.

We had an 1980s Buick Regal *DIESEL* and I looked at trying to snag one of those late 90's /2000s Regals with GM's best daily driver engine, the 3800/3.8 V6. I only learned about the Grand National model in the last few years. This was a fun video.

My parents owned a 1971 Buick GS 455, blue convertible with a white top Our neighbor had the exact same car yet it was badged "Skylark" and had a much smaller engine and no hood scoops

The first downsize body was ‘77 and again in ‘82. The first 6 cylinder they used in the 70s was a 4.1L, the 3.8 began use in ‘82. At least for Buick. I had both. A 78 and an 84.

I have a 69 Buick Electra 225. The longest car Buick ever built. Available with a variety of engine options. Production ran from 1959-1990.

My grandmother had a 77 Regal that I remember being so plush and mushy. When she died in 1992 it only had like 40K Onnit. I remember thanking God that I was only twelve so I wouldn't be the grandkid that got stuck driving the powder blue Jew Canoe. Down here in Miami there were tons of the two door Regals and I had a friend whose mom inherited a 1982 from her parents and he got stuck with it. It was a lot cooler than my grandmother's 77. One day at a football game somebody approached him in the parking lot and offered to buy it for $3,000. My friend said yes he would think about it with images of acrx in his head. Imagine our shock when the guy reaches into his back pocket and pulled out $3,000 cash. That generation Regal is really in demand right now and my friends still tells me to this day that he wishes he had held onto it. I have to remind him that it was over 25 years ago and chances are that Regal would not still be around today if he had kept it. I have an elderly neighbor who drives a 1994 or 95 Regal with the legendary 3800 and I make sure to treat him really nice at the HOA meetings in hopes that he'll leave it to me in his will. That was my favorite generation of the Regal ever since I saw Bette Midler's character dryvit in the movie Beaches or as my son affectionately refers to the movie as Fat Beaches.

I own a 2018 Buick Regal gs and I know it’s mostly just Buick in name being a rebadge of an Opel. That said I love that car.

I was always interested in Buicks for some reason. The Regal GS would be my pick if i wanted a factory sleeper that can easily go under the radar and if i ever wanted a newer car, i would buy the TourX.

I own a final generation Impala that was also based upon an Opel platform and was discontinued in 2020. There is no comparison whatsoever to the Impala it replaced. The discontinued Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XTS were stable-mates. Because of the used car market inflation, I could sell it now for more than I paid for it 4 years ago (I am the 2nd owner). Also, I really liked the final generation Regal wagon and wouldn’t mind owning one.

I can't believe they had a new Regal and Regal wagon but canceled it. The wagon is AWD only but it has the 2.0 Turbo. They're not bad looking cars compared to everything else made today. I don't think I would want to own one, but I would like to drive one to see how it feels. I'd like to find a G-Body in decent shape to swap the drivetrain from my 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan. The LT1 doesn't have enough power for the big B-Body, but it would make a G-Body pretty quick

my 1st car was a 1996 regal coupe. loved the vertically mounted door handles and the 3800. always wanted a supercharged 3800 regal sedan from the mid 2000s. speedy and practical, my favorite combination. I'd also love a regal wagon fom 2018 and up. Thought they were really attractive wagons

By the late 80's and early 90's it was pretty easy to find 78 and 79 sport coupes with bad Turbos for around $500 which you could pull right out and drop a Buick 350 in it's place so you would have the performance to back up the good looks

Nice! My favorite was the Grand National. As a kid in the 1980s, one of my car nut neighbors traded in his 1986 Mustang GT Convertible for a brand new 1987 Grand National. I was surprised, he had always been a Ford guy, and so I was I at the time. But I quickly saw the appeal of Grand National, though as it gained recognition, it wasn't quite as stealthy. A Grand National wagon (based on the same G body) would have been a really cool sleeper. I'm sure someone made their own.

The remaining turbo 3.8 engines were used up in Pontiac TTA, the turbo Trans Am. It was faster because it didn’t have the full frame but still had the inter cooled turbo engine from the last GN year. Not as cool as the granny but definitely worth a slice of car history itself.

During one year's run of the 1-Lap of America, a Buick 3.8L Turbo powered Electra Estate wagon was entered by GM. I've actually seen a Lesabre Sport Coupe IRL... a rare sight, indeed. That all said, it's a shame GM didn't take powering its full-size models--even just the Buicks--with the 3.8L Turbo more seriously. Because it would've helped them get through the pinch of pre-'87 CAFE mandates without resorting to making 4-cyl. Firebirds & Camaros.

I had a 3.8 V6 1979 Regal in 1988. The same year, my best friend bought a 1969 Buick Gran Sport Convertible with a 1970 455 engine in it. The day he took possession, it didn’t have seats or a working speedometer. We slowly restored it back to a respectable condition, starting with pulling some Camaro seats from the junkyard. I came close to buying a TourX the year they came out. Forum complaints about the lack of parts availability and body panels turned me off of that idea. I suspect that’s just going to get worse, quickly.

The biggest issue with the early 2000's supercharged V6 Regal's was that they all suffered from wicked torque steer. They were so bad, they were almost unsafe to drive.

I would love to see why Peugeot failed in America, being British and actually having one I would love to see why they didn’t work over the pond! Great videos by the way.
