I worked for Honda when they started recruiting line workers to hand build the most recent NSX. The prerequisites to apply were pretty insane. If I remember correctly, you had to have had at least a minimum of 20 years of assembly experience to even be considered. Those cars are incredibly well-built by the absolute best Honda has to offer.
@mildmanneredthinkingman9323
I drove a 2016 NSX and I absolutely loved it. It handles well for it's size and weight, the sound is great, nice fit and finish. And not to mention the Honda reliability and having something that any enthusiast will see you in and give you the nod. They know you have good taste when you drive an NSX. Fantastic driver's car.

@@ItsAlive111 that is the benefit - a mass produced, but well known engine -> Imagine a super car that is actually reliable and can be maintained as a normal person. As a 2019 F56 MINI JCW owner, I have to say it is a very underrated car. It handles insanely well in the corners, and surprisingly fast. However I do agree that it is a bit lacking in power, which is why I am considering to put a tune and upgrade the intercooler. I used to own a '12 Cooper S with the Peugeot 1.6 engine. Very fun and nippy car, quite fast too at the time for a hatchback. But reliability was questionable, and ended up breaking down in the end. Doug's mention on the Cooper S really made my day because it's about time the F-generation MINIs get more publicity.

It's so funny, I loved seeing the E60 M5 make an appearance here because I owned one from 2016-2021. It was a 2007 model year, it had the 6-speed manual transmission, and the only thing I ever did was upgrade the exhaust system. I bought it with ~55k miles and added about 60k miles in my ownership. Matter of fact, I even sold that car on carsandbids last September when it was finally time to part ways with her. Problems I experienced with that car? Absolutely none. All the documentation around the rob bearing issues, I never had a single issue with it in my car. I like to attribute this to the fact that I bought one of the few manuals that came through the states. In the end, it was time for something new, but boy do I miss that car. It was sluggish in the corners, but god what a straight-line rocket ship that car was. I live in Dallas where we have amazing new highways, and I'm not ashamed to admit that the downshift from 6th to 4th in conjunction with the nearly 9k redline is something I'd enjoy regularly.... What a dream. Miss that car. Great video as always, Doug!

As a former mini tech and current bmw tech, I gotta agree with your two choices on the M3 and Mini Cooper S. The mini specifically is a super fun car to drive around, it handles like it’s on rails. For as cheap as it is you get a considerably good quality of car. As for reliability, older minis and their engines weren’t the best however the newest engines have been pretty reliable so far. As for the Tesla I gotta disagree. They may be fast and handle okay, but their build quality is absolute garbage. Horrible panel alignment from factory, malfunctioning electronics, and poor quality parts are only a few things wrong with teslas. I know someone who works as a Tesla tech and he says they have to constantly replace control arms. Like multiple a day on multiple cars. Clearly they’re doing something wrong.
@plop31
@plop31 Год назад
For the control arms they are making a silent recall due to a bad lubrication of a ball join (outsourced pieces ). malfunctioning electronicsi'm not aware of that. can you explain what are the problems? My2cents i don't give a shit of panel gaps and other minor problems, if the car is half the price for the same performance it's a bargain! Between a brand new 130k$ BMW M3 and Tesla model 3 performance at 70k$ there is no discussion. only the 1% will pay double the price to just have the pleasure to look at perfect alignment.... You are complaing about the tesla but the Mini Cooper is also a very very cheap made car: interior is kinda nice looking (if you like this neo-retro fashion) but only from far away.....

@@plop31 There was a youtuber (I forgot their name but the video exists somewhere) that got a brand new Tesla model Y and almost instantly had electronic issues. One of the rear doors wouldn’t open electronically, the window stopped working, and it took multiple weeks and multiple tries to fix said issues because the tech didn’t get it right first try/couldn’t properly diagnose the issues. This is just one example but many examples exist out there from customers if you decide to look into it. As for the Mini Cooper, yeah the interior is a bit plasticy but it’s better than something like a Tesla which feels like it was made out of cardboard. The quality of interior materials and build is really poor in Teslas which cause them to squeak and creak nonstop. I can’t say the same about mini coopers. For the price and the enjoyment factor I’d definitely say minis beat Tesla any day of the week, especially one with a manual transmission

Over the years I've had so much changed hoping it would be the last major repair. From two transmissions (1st replace had warranty), blown turbo, front axel, to full: suspension, struts, calipers, rotors. Also had an issue with a failed light module; the BMW dealer found 9 new left all in Germany, so mine was pulled from a wrecked car, and poorly programmed when installed. It's now paid off fully and sitting outside till it sells.

Yep agree 100% on 3rd gen Minis. My spouse and I have a F54S (B46 engine) Clubman and F57 convertible with the B38 3 cylinder i8 engine- both stick- and they are fantastic cars. Fun, tossable and have been reliable. They both feel well made with excellent ergonomics. I think the 1st and 2nd gen Minis had issues and expensive maintenance costs that soured people to the brand. Like the majority of European cars, you need to take care of your Mini- they are not appliances like souless Toyotas 😁. I DIY both our Minis and can't be happier with ownership. Honestly can't see myself owning anything else that balances fun to drive with unique personality. Just joyful cars to own!

I agree so much on the Mini Cooper! I drove a John Cooper Works recently with the 6-speed and it was a blast. Unfortunately they are no longer offering the manual, so it's either very recent model used or a pass for me. I really enjoyed my time in the WRX as well, and it makes a ton of sense at the Premium trim level. I think it's not quite nice enough for the pricing on a Limited and definitely not nice enough for GT pricing. But it's still in my finalists because I live in Minnesota and driving a WRX in winter seems awesome. Why they put summer tires on it stock is beyond me though. I'd replace those immediately. If I remember right, the Top Gear guys (the good ones, that is) hated the E60 5-series, but Clarkson LOVED the M5. So it's not completely underrated. The Tesla surprised me on this list, the only track video I've seen for that model was done by the Throttle House guys and it really isn't set up for that kind of driving. Also, I'd rather have cancer than a Tesla, but that's an individual thing. What a fun video, Doug! This is my favorite you've done!

One car I think should've been on Doug's list is the W205 C43 AMG. A lot of people sleep on this car due to the C63 existing but Mercedes absolutely nailed this car. The 3.0 V6 has so much character and the exhaust note is outstanding for 6 cylinders. You have a fantastic interior and whether you have the sport seats or performance seats both are very comfortable for daily use and still function well for spirited driving. This car is able to be settled down when you want but once you start driving it aggressively the car reacts the way you'd want it to and basically urges you to drive faster. I actually own a C43 and actually enjoyed driving it more than a C63, couple it with a tune and you're holding up with the C63 in the straights.

The interesting thing about this video is Doug nailed it for why most of these cars are unwanted. And as a 2017 WRX STi owner, the new WRX looks ugly with its cheap flat black plastic and grotesquely busy and discordant lines. Even if they made an STi and didn’t needlessly push the automatic, the new generation has so much ugliness tacked on that I still wouldn’t buy one. It’s that big of a turn off. Subaru has received all the feedback they need to fix this car, but haven’t made any changes yet. Regardless, several of these cars and a whole lot of others on the market now suffer from the 2020s styling malaise of gawdy aggressiveness over beauty or class.
@AkarZaephyr

@DiegoMonroyF Год назад
I have one and it definitely looks better in person than in pictures, and it drives really well. I understand that the WRX community prefers the older ones, but fans are turning their dislike into plain hate. And the proof is that only in English-speaking communities I've heard terrible things about it; on other channels they say "yeah, it's cool" and that's about it. Now, to be fair and to also discuss the negatives, I was disappointed on the black plastic panels that it has, although you do get over it pretty soon. The tech side is also lacking compared to most new cars; I wish it had more bells and whistles for the price. You can definitely tell that the Subaru engineers said "pretty please" to the Subaru execs, and they got their last chance at it, and had to make the most of what they had, so they chose quality over design, and had to reuse a bunch of stuff. All that said, it IS a fun, practical and well-made car for people who would swap fancy equipment for a better engine, 4WD and fun driving. AND most of all... non-car people won't say a bad thing about it--it's not like you're driving a minivan that _most_ people find totally uncool. If they even say anything about it--no hate, no terrible things, no complaints about the plastic--it's more like "oh wow, nice car, it looks fast!" and that's about it. It is really just enthusiasts who hate it, and I would invite them to consider it as what it is: a fun sedan by a small company that drives really well, at a decent price.

I wouldn't say they are great values used anymore, (Thanks Doug!) a Fiat 500 Abarth will always be more fun than a Cooper. Also with a Fiat you only get horrible electrical issues, not horrible mechanical and electrical issues 😁

This is true, my Abarth has its quirks but it sounds better and looks better than the mini. Hell the 595s and 695s look better and are brand new in Europe

That is true if you fit in somehow. I'm 6"3 and I was unable to find any feasible way to fit there comfortably to drive it :(

@@grig4866 I'm 6"1' and I have headroom to spare. Most of my height is in my legs, and while I wouldn't call it comfortable, my seating position doesn't leave me sore or anything.

To add on to what Doug said about the newer Minis, there's a ton of aftermarket support. Its pretty easy to get more power and better handling out of the cars!

The Model 3 is well done in so many areas, people just don't realize how great a job Elon and his crew did on this one. To this day, no EV on the market can compete with its clever packaging and engineering no matter what brand or platform. Even those they were designed to be an EV from the ground up. You can legitimately gripe about some of the build quality issues, but I've seen new Toyotas with panel gaps that are no better. The TTRS is very lust-worthy and later versions would be a great second car to putt around in on weekends, but it also works well as a daily driver. The V-10 M5? Mmmmmm.... seems like you have to buy it twice, once for the car, again to fix the engine.

Even the base model 3cyl Mini is fun to drive. It's surprisingly refined, even more so than some 4 cylinder cars and it handles like a go-kart. Other 3 cylinder cars like the Mitsubishi Mirage and Ford Fiesta are as refined as a food processor with spoons in it. I actually enjoyed the Mini more than a Honda Civic Si and Golf GTI

They are underrated because Americans only car about 0-60 and stupid things. I guess what Doug is trying to point out is how good the car actually drive, how good of a sports car it is

Great to see an undervalued list! My dad had a Mustang GT when I was 16, and I remember it being so incredibly fun & sketchy to drive on twisty mountain roads. He bought the 2004 special edition 986 a few years later, and still drives it. It feels underpowered compared to today’s cars, but the handling is just so perfect. Really phenomenal car if your roads are extremely twisty. I have a Model 3 LR with acceleration boost now, and I’m really happy with it because I need a family car with cargo capacity that is still fun to drive. The new Model 3 Performance seems to solve a couple of my minor complaints - it has better seat bolsters and supposedly improved suspension.

YES to the mini cooper. i drive a 2011 clubman s. i put a new exhaust system on it and it’s amazing. i can through it around corners, take highway on ramps at twice the speed and get oushed into my seat and due to the exhaust it pops and gurgles like an old school muscle car
