I think one of the most important things you should prepare yourself for as a consumer is the ability to get up and walk out. Don’t fall for the dealer tactics of the car will be gone tomorrow, its the last one we have or the deal if for today only or after the test drive another salesman comes looking for the keys for their imaginary customer. Let them have it, unless you are happy with the terms of the deal you need to understand there will be other dealers & other vehicles available. Thanks

How come the "destination fee" isn't just built into the price? I don't pay a destination fee for a toaster.......
@crosslink1493
@crosslink1493 2 года назад
IT usually is. If you look on dealer's websites, or the manufacturer's applied window sticker, for specific cars you'll notice there's a 'destination' charge included as a line item before the grand total (MSRP sticker price). Not putting that up front allows for the advertised price to be lower. As Ray mentions in the video it DOES include the shipping from the factory and clean-up at the dealer before its put on the lot, so don't pay for an extra 'cleaning and prep' fee. At least that's the way it was when I sold cars a while back.

I love that Ray said a doc fee is earmarked to pay for "non-revenue producing employees." In any business, there's more job security when you're a revenue producing employee.

Those "none revenue producing" employees, are designated as such, by their employer, to have an excuse for charging their customer those high fees. Any business have to have employees to do the work necessary to run the business and those employees are indispensable for the business to make a profit. Just because they are not part of the sales department doesn't mean they are "none revenue producing". Auto Dealers are detestables.

Interesting to hear you say msrp deals are “rare”. I sold cars at a volume dealership in California for about 4 years and every single one of our cars had an addendum with 3-10k in dealer markups depending on the model .Having a sticker deal was frowned upon at the time. We would take loser deals here n there but for the most part everything was above sticker .

Can you talk about how much dealers typically pay for used car from end of lease or auctions/trade ins and how they price them for retail? I am trying to understand how much to offer dealers for a used car without them hounding a ton of profit off of me. Is there every a good time to go in to buy a used car? How long does the car sit before they send it to auction. When is the best time for me to go into the dealer on a used car i've been watching to get the best possible price before they send it to auction. How do i know its the best price they can do? Luckily for me in CT, conveyance fees are negotiable. By law dealers are required to disclose the amount of the fee & The services provided for the fee, and the fact that it is not payable to the state. They are also required to disclose the amount of the fee in advertisements, and notify buyers that the fee is negotiable…Which they still don’t do.

I have another question. When buying a used car from a dealer, are they generally alright with having your mechanic look the car over before even talking about pricing? Personally, I want to know this is a sound car and know what problems it has or might have in the near future and figure that into my decision making. I don't trust the multi-point inspections from dealers because I've been burnt a few times. Do you have any advice for buying used cars from dealers (or did I miss that video?)?

How can you beat an ADM (additional dealer markup) type of thing on a car that is in short supply. I am interested in a Porsche 718 Spyder. The situation as has been told to me, is they will build as many cars as there is demand for but not more. They have not started arriving in US as of 5/1. My local dealers are all saying they want $10K to $15K of ADM or some other extra "fee" for this car. I do not know how any of the basic car buying techniques will work in this type of situation? It seems like a different type of process than just finding all the gray Camrys at your local dealers and negotiating down from MSRP and up from invoice?
@CarEdge
@CarEdge 4 года назад
Brad, you are in a tough spot. Although I am not in favor of charging more than MSRP, many dealers are when it comes to high demand, low supply vehicles and I'm guessing that most Porsche dealers fall into this category. While there may be one or two dealers scattered around the country who are not, they will look to sell to their local customers in order to assure that they get to perform the service work to make up for not charging the ADM. If you really want the car it appears that you will have to bite the bullet and pay the up charge even if you can negotiate it down a bit.

@CarEdge
@CarEdge 4 года назад
Mike, thanks for watching and commenting. Ah, the joys of trying to buy a car from a dealer! Internet prices are never really accurate. They always show all the possible incentives that no on actually really qualifies for. That being said, dealerships make money on the front-end and the back-end of a car deal (more on that here: yourautoadvocate.com/guides/how-do-car-dealerships-make-money/). Knowing that, it sounds like the salesman wants you to finance your car so that they can make money on the back-end of the deal, and if you pay cash they'll charge you more to make money on the front-end of the deal. Your best bet may be to simply work with a different dealer. Let us know how it goes!

@vote4republicans2024

It's true because you lose the financing rebate when paying cash. The catch (if there is one) is that you have to carry the loan for 3 to 6 months. The other catch is that the financing has to be with the manufactures loan company. Chrysler Credit for example. Bad credit you may not qualify for Chrysler credit. So, it's a bit of a scam but it's not false statement.

Your Auto Advocate I read the article, thought it was interesting, but really wasn’t very specific with information. It could though be because I am making it more complicated than it actually is. Say I live in Nevada and want to purchase a new vehicle from a California Dealership. Will the Dealership collect all the taxes, registration, licensing, and fees based upon my Nevada residence and pay that money directly to the State of Nevada DMV? Or will I pay California taxes and fees? Just how seamless is this process? I am interested in purchasing a new or used vehicle soon. Love the content of of your videos! Thanks

@markh.6687
@markh.6687 3 года назад
I'll assume that most dealers will refuse, because the more you finance, the bigger the kickback from the finance source to the dealer.
@jerrylundegaard2592
@jerrylundegaard2592 3 года назад
The good idea is not to pay all these fees. The only fees you should pay are those imposed by the government, namely registration and sales tax. These are not from the dealer and are not negotiable as they are from the government and must be paid. Any fee a car dealer attempts to add to the price is FAKE. The simple way to look at these fees is price plus dealer fees is the actual price. Essentially if the fee is included in the taxable amount, it is fake. If one dealer agrees to a price of $20,000 and has a fake fee of $300, the price is $20,300. If one dealer agrees to a price of $19,500 buy has a $900 fake fee the price is $20,400. If you want to pay $20,000, you should offer to buy at $19,700 at the first dealer and $19,100 at the second dealer. Whatever you do, do not let the dealer work the fake fee scam.

Isn't a doc fee the cost of doing business? Same with transportation fee. Nope. Not paying dealership twice. I am SO looking forward to buying my next new car, however, my 2002 Toyota Highlander is STILL going strong.

Love your channel. Question I have, is there anyway to know what the dealership owns the vehicle for. Would be a good starting point in negotiating.

I have, actually on their daily. Prices are the same or lower than they were 6 months ago. Maybe it is your market? However it would make more sense that they are higher now because there is more demand. The pandemic shut down new plants all over which means no one was really “able” to buy new ones so they default to used ones. What are you looking at buying? If it is a Toyota, then yes they will still be pretty high compared to new. It has always been that way

Let’s say I want to finance a car that has an MSRP of $30k and after tax, tag, title etc. the out the door price is now $35k. What should I strive for as an out the door price that would be considered a good deal on my part?

In most cases the consumers are paying a double Destination Fee. . . looking at a Ru Crosstrek today online and their Destination fee's for that are $1,200 plus and the dealeship was in the same town as the factory, cost avg'g ok we got it. The consumer should be allowed to pay the fee because the dealership seems to be incapable of paying it without charging the consumer double for it. Or let the consumer pay a token a fee and be allowed to pick the car up at the factory. I also think the mfg'g part of the car industry would be much better off without being tied at the hip to no shame dealerships at all . . . AT ALL . . . if they want to survive.
@jamesm.8392
@jamesm.8392 Год назад
And I just wonder how much of that $1,200 fee did they really pay out of pocket??? Just like every number for every item on that MSRP is no where near their cost It' all a front/scam

Destination charge on a new vehicle? If the new vehicle someone is buying is already at the location, why would one pay extra for something already delivered? Would it not be included in the msrp? That seems to be the dealer double dipping. I was advised not to pay for a destination charge because it is already included in the msrp and the dealer is trying to make a shady profit on that. No good.

It's not included in the MSRP, if you look on the window sticker it is listed after the MSRP.
