I will say that from personal experience, a Saab 9-5 (og) is an extremely safe car. A long time ago, I was involved in a car accident (I was not at fault) with a truck and a VW Golf. The truck was totalled and the emergency services had to cut the Golf driver out of his totalled car. Myself, my wife and my son got out of our Saab 9-5 Aero without a bruise. The police and fire crew commented upon how safe a Saab was. My car was back on the road 6 weeks later once it was repaired.

I just bought a 2002 Saab 9-5 and you are spot on it's a car I have always overlooked because the exterior styling never really stood out and I always considered them a dentist's car. Now that I own one I see what I was missing out on. I bought mine from an enthusiast who builds these and goes through them. And I must add it is a very practical car. Rides great, tight suspension, great handling, good power, huge trunk, and very comfortable seats. Mine has had the aero seats swapped in and a few other mods done by a previous owner. I love my Saab. 280k miles and still drives like new but has had much of the car replaced or rebuilt.

Kyle...great video. You are spot-on! Since new, my 2008 9-5 has cost me $3,700 in parts, labor and fluids. Except for the throttle body, every penny spent was on wear and preventative maintenance. I replaced my first throttle body at 79,000 miles with a new Hella, and just had to replace it again at 112,000. Pissed me off. This time I bought a used one from Goldwing. Also, on the 05-09 9-5's, the Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger is a beast, and will regularly go 200,000+ miles. My 2008 9-5 has never left me stranded. I do wish that I didn't have to fill it with premium, and in-town stop & go mileage is awful...about 10 mpg. But I do get 30 mpg on the highway. When I finally sell mine, the buyer will get a fantastic vehicle with many happy miles of motoring.

I love my SAAB 9-5 Aero form 2003, i just love driving it, sadly i live in Sweden and we salt our roads heavily, and sadly the old SAABs hate it and rost, like my SAAB i need to fix the rost and it will cost me 15 000 Swedish kronor or 1500€ for a professional to fix it, with is kinda expensive... but i will save up to i and fix it. the other things i have fixed so far are, new Xenon lights, new xenon level controller, new gas pump, new 3 inch exhaust pipe (former 2 inch pipe and very baldy repaird) and a new handle for the trunk. then another thing i need to fix is the engine and transmission bushings. then i think the car will be fully fixed =D So if you don't mind speeding some money now and then, you will have a very nice car to drive or maybe a car to have some fun in! my SAAB got the 2.3T engine with stage 1 trim witch gives it around 270 horse power, i have gotten her to 220 km/h so far, which was extremely fun for me to do! So boys and girls if you wand a cheep and fun car to drive get a SAAB, you will almost never regret having one in you life.

That’s one reason I bought mine the grocery thing! I worry about so much stuff when I take my ‘19 Golf R to the store (or my work, got door dinged there too) and it’s nice to have the other car. That said, it’s not just a mule, it’s a nice comfy quick-ish smooth cruiser that holds a unique place in car history
@22chachalaca
@22chachalaca 3 года назад
The Golf R is just a golf. I don't know why Golf R and GTI get glorified as garage queens. Makes me cringe when someone stores a golf R in the garage over winter. They literally cost the same as Honda CRV. Drive it, take precautions but enjoy it like the 30-40 grand car it is.
@justin_san_souci
@justin_san_souci 3 года назад
@@22chachalaca I don’t know anything about Honda CRV’s or how expensive you think they are but my Golf R is not “just” anything. That’s my dream car and yeah I drive the crap out of it. All that much more reason why I need a beater. I intend to keep my Golf forever and want it to last a long time. And it was expensive to me for sure.

@@justin_san_souci I understand it's expensive to you, but at the end of the day it's a $40,000 car. I love them too but it's something to put the miles on and use daily. the 2.3t engines are definitely more reliable than the GM engines were, I have an 02 9-5 aero with 240k miles and haven't had any major issues with it either, it's never broken down and the only stuff that's been relaced is either for fun like the boost controller, or just standard like the subframe bushings which were getting a little rough after being driven relatively hard for 230k miles

I will also add that the Saab B235R engine is almost bullet proof if looked after properly, and will do 250,000 miles easily. I can see why you love your Saab and I agree with you that they are brilliant cars and the Aero 9-5 is surprisingly quick when accelerating between 40 -70 mph. Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame once claimed that it was quicker than a Porsche 911 when accelerating between those speeds. I know I have embarrassed a few BMWs when I had my 9-5 Aero!🤣

Why buy an OG 9-5? Unique, a lot of “bang for the buck”, and relatively simple to work on. Also still has a Saab designed engine. There are far more 9-3s on the road than 9-5s, so if you want to stand out, get the 9-5. Is it going to be as reliable as a Toyota? Probably not, but I can promise you that it will be much more fun to drive. And if you don’t want the car for performance, that’s ok. Enjoy the high mpg, the heated seats, sunroof, and a lot of other features that 9-5s have. Most of the time, I drive like a grandpa and can get 26 mpg in town. That said, if you don’t want to work on your car, you may want to look elsewhere. Some shops will try to scam you out of $$$ because “iT’s a EuRoPeAn CaR!”, and people will tell you that parts are no longer made. That is BS. Do people stop driving Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, or Saturns because the manufacturers are no longer around? Of course not. Manufacturers do not make parts, they assemble. And parts availability for GM era Saabs is pretty good in the US. If you’re completely new to working on cars, try to find someone who is familiar with Saabs, or better yet, a Saab mechanic who can help you out. And definitely join the Facebook groups.

I’ve had an ‘01 5-speed 9-5 Aero wagon as a primary workhorse for almost seven years. I find the key to reliability is to have a second highly-depreciated Saab (a ‘96 9000 Aero, for example) sitting next to it as a backup just in case.

Had Euro cars all my life but had avoided SAABs for the exact reasons you pointed out...people tell you they're unreliable, etc...well, even if they are unreliable, those seats make up for it. It's a beautifully built car and just so much better than any German car I've had. Such a shame GM killed them. They also killed our Holdens down here in Oz. But, back on topic...SAAB seats! 2005 Saab 9 5 2.3t ARC. First time I ever bought a car with a turbo. It's a cool car, but mine needs some work. Not sure if it's going to be worth it for me to pay someone to do it for me since it will probably be over 2k worth of work. It is a really smooth ride on the parkway though. You don't even realise how fast you are going. I think I bought it at like 150k and now it has 178k. Did the brakes and put a new muffler in. Replaced the water valve and water pump. The mechanic is saying he can't find the parts, but i guess they only look through a few of their own distributers. I guess you can still find the parts online... I'll have to see if I order the parts online, maybe they'll be able to put them in

I'll respectfully disagree. I own a 2011 95 and I love it. I got lucky and inherited it relatively inexpensively from a dear friend. I've spent a few dollars bringing it up to snuff but I don't regret it one bit. It will probably get a new timing chain during the winter , but it will insure a long life of enjoyment! It never ceases to amaze me how up to date it is for a 10+ year old car. The only thing I miss is the backup camera, but maybe I'll get it done this spring.

Well, i will point out one thing, Saab 9-5, 00-03 has a faulty oil-pickup, due to the exhaust being to close to the oilpan = the oil isnt picked up, cuz of the heat and kinda fumes away = low oil pressure = dead engine. If you drive like grandma, you'll be fine. If you like to speed a little, you are doomed :) Other then that, you are on point.

Engine still runs fine, just the oil light came on when the oil was warm. 😅 ) Was cheaper to get another engine, 650 euro's for a good one.) Agree with most of what you said with some caveats. While its very comfortable and the cabin ambience is nice I wouldn't call it spacious. Actually for the outside size of a car its rather cramped inside. I'm 190cm and my head touches the ceiling. Same goes for the rear space - comfortable seats but not much headroom or kneeroom. Most parts as you say are easily available, but some are not - like the ABS module for 2004 cars which is very hard to find for a reasonable price and which is most often unrepairable if it goes wrong (and it does go wrong). So the Christmas lights are on for more than a year on mine. And even if you manage to iron out most glitches, the resistance to corrosion is rather weak which becomes very apparent in colder climates so it steadily rots away. What I most dislike about it is the bouncy and crude suspension. All things considered, I still love driving my 9-5. Over 200.000 miles, stars all the time and is as fast as it ever was despite most of the warning lights on :) Thanks for your videos!

I owned a 9-5 Aero a few years ago. Got rid of it with 165,000 miles on the clock as was doing lots of miles and needed a diesel, fuel prices are higher in the UK. Great car never used a drop of oil, had been remapped and still pulled unbelievably well. Very comfortable and no rust at all. Had a few electrical gremlins but nothing mechanical and used as a daily driver. Recently got a Turbo X but 9-3 just aren’t as well built as the 9-5 and don’t feel as solid. Owned a 900, 9000 as well all superb cars.

Had a 2004 9-5 Aero and no issues aside from one electrical which was an easy fix and it got me to 170k miles no problems other than that one. Then gave it to my mother and she totaled it 3 days later. Then got her a Nissan Rogue and she totaled that in 2 weeks, then a brand new Nissan Murano and she totaled that. So that was the last time i got her a car. But when she crashed my Saab that i bought when new i was so disappointed lol. Had every option even the ventilated front seats which was great

I have a 2005 9-3 convertible which was in the garage the other day and they gave me a 2000 9-5 as a courtesy car with 130,000 on it for a couple of days. The first thing I noticed is the car had more torque than my 9-3 but wow it used a lot of fuel. I got only mid 20's miles per gallon driving it moderately. They don't depreciate yeah but fuel economy is harsh if you do a lot of miles that will soon add up. My Skoda 1.6 diesel does a real world 65 MPG so I found the 9-5 painful fuel economy wise. This is more important in the UK as fuel costs a lot more over here.

So I always wanted a SAAB. I really liked the Dame 9-5 from your rebuild video, and I DM'd you about a rebuilt one I found thinking it was the one from you video. Long story short, if you recall, it wasn't yours, and I grabbed an 07 Sportcombi locally for cheap and have been fixing the little bits needed. Well, now that I'm fully invested in the SAAB world, I'm seeing the "Dame's" starting to go up in price. I'm seeing 100k models going for $8 to $15k for them! Don't know if I got lucky at the right time, but the Dame's seem to be going up in value already. Even though they are the unloved face-lift. Either way, keep up the good work. If you want, I'm on Insta at the_sunday_swede.

Hey, guy from Sweden here. Got 2 saab 95 aeros 2004, one which is sedan and one which is combi. Had the combi for 4 years now, and the sedan i got like a month ago. Gonna keep them both, great cars. You Can modify alot on These cars, the sedan i got is modified alot so its got better handling looks and performance overall, but still got the saab feeling if you know what i mean. The combi is pretty much stock except for a stage 1 and some other minor things, and it shall remain so :) How can you live in swe without owning and driving these things, they are super affordable, and if you work on them yourself you can save lots of money, that and the fact that they generally are cheap to get makes them super economical to own. Performance for cheap guys, especially the aero models, goes for the 93 too of course

I have a 2005 sedan aero(stage 1)love it, lately I have been thinking about getting a 2004-2005 Aero Wagon. Can you explain what difference you feel from a driving perspective between a sedan and a wagon if any? I'm curious. The wagon has been growing on me 😂
@achmed51
@achmed51 2 года назад
@@nab5018 i think none except that the wagon is a little heavier (like 70-100 kg?). The sedan is probably just a little better because of that. However my sedan got different shocks and other mods and my wagon is stock so its not comparable because of that. Wagon is superior due to more storage, thats all, from a Driving perspective very similar just that the sedan is lighter which is nice.

@@achmed51 thank you very much for taking the time to answer! My plan is to upgrade my suspension which is feeling a bit tired with Bilsteins and Eibach springs and progressively take it to a healthy 320-350 hp with upgraded turbo and internals nothing too crazy but make it into kind of an Aero R or Hirsch+😂. And using better silicones hoses , powerflex bushing... Will see later for an Wagon lol
@achmed51
@achmed51 2 года назад
@@nab5018 i got bilstein h8 all round and maptun springs on the sedan, makes a big difference from stock. The car becomes more responsive in its steering and more stiff. Feels more sporty. Not the most comfy, the stock ones are softer which perhaps is preferred by people in general. But i like it. Great idea that with the engine! I have stage 3 ethanol in mine, it does not include the upgraded Turbo, its supposed to be 315 hk and 450 nm on ethanol, 290 hk 440 nm om petrol. I have the powerflex bushings aswell. Who will make the software for your tune? I have maptune.

I would say there are 3 reasons. Comfortable seats. Powerful engine and initial if not total costs. But there are twice as many ie. 6 reasons to own a Saab 9-3 2.0 sportcombi 2010 or 2011 aero. Seats. All wheel drive. Compact size to zip through traffic on busy streets, cheaper maintenance if any for novices (more reliable and newer), more in the spirit of the 900, the coolest Saab ever made, and a beautiful interior and dash. Am I wrong here? 2 to 1 people in these surveys prefer the 9-3 to the 9-5 so I don't think so. Even if it is the V6 9-3. But honestly, I don't like V-6 engines. (V5 is favorite). They're too heavy (affecting safety on wet roads and handling), too fast (yes, this is possible), and I don't want a 3900 pound car. If you disagree, please let me know. I am open to having my mind changed if you can give me 3 more reasons.

I dislike 95 for its weight too. They are too heavy and it takes them first 2 gears to open up. I like 95ng design inside and out most but then it is boring behind the wheel and I got scared of expensive spare body parts in case of accidents. I guess Saab is over in my mind for good. A brain says to pair up with different car makes.

I was interested until 6:40. I get that Saabs are safe but if you’re going to get a beater car then why is this a better choice than a used Toyota or Honda? Those two brands have plenty of cheap parts and proven reliability to keep the cost of ownership low. However, owning a 9-5 station wagon would be cool.

Ive test driven 9-5 1.9tid automatic, 110kw (2008) today and Im gutted. The car was heavy, no fun factor, leather seats just average, door handles squeezing, interior outdated in general. I dont get all that praise. It is just an average big car. Im after a sharper, stiffer feel. The body design outdated in person too (I dont get those ugly tail lights). The 95ng is miles better although slow too but at least much better interior quality and body looks sleek. I will give Saab one more chance with 93ng but I already presume that it will be just another average vehicle. My dreams are getting realistic about Saab. There must be some kind of false flag, false praise there.
