This $1000 Saab Proves You NEVER Have To Buy A New Car Again

I love Volvos. Shifting Lanes loves Volvos. But none of us have ever driven the Volvo's Swedish cousin, a Saab. Until today! Kyle Pancis was nice enough to get in contact and let me drive his 2002 9-3 convertible. But the story behind this car is even cooler than getting to drive it. He bought it for $1000 with a blown engine, and did all the work himself to make an extremely competent daily driver. Proof with a little knowledge you never need to buy a new car ever again.

My father and mother worked in the Saab factory from 1972 - 2012 until the bankruptcy. The factory is running it hasn't been producing as in the Saab days, but new cars might be coming soon I think 2020 from the new owner. The 2005 Saab's got the GM threatment they downsised the oil pump that backfired quite hard. I think personally the best years are 2001-02 Saab 9-5 wagon. I personally do prever in vector trim if there still are cars left. At that time I drove one of those cars from factory fresh I received the car when it had 20 km on the dial and left it back when it had 4000 km that I drove during a month. If I do remember it correctly the Saab 9-3 Viggen was manufactured in Finland as of the convertibles at the time. I don't exactly remember what year when they changed the convertibles for being manufactured in Sweden. The midrange punch was the idéa behind safe driving if you think about overtaking it's better for that kind of driving. I read that they have a joint venture with Koenigsegg so how these cars will be I don't know.

That sounds great. SAAB should live on! I just got a 2008 9-3 2.0 and was hesitate about the 4 cylinder coming from honda accord 6 cylinder 2001 and a SL500 8 cylinder and could not be happier driving this vehicle! All I can say is pure enjoyment - the car rocks; talk about nice bang for your buck and loads of fun! SAAB NEEDS TO LIVE - thanks for the info.

I had one of the last 900S t to come off the line that turned out to be a 9-3, so it said 900s in the door and 9-3 on the back, and they couldn't get it to run, because it also wound up on the Viggen Line, I got it for 70% cheaper then it was worth, I put a 97 MAP sensor on it, and it drove 279k on it before I sold it. and that car blew everything away from 70 MPH -140MPH...and looked really odd...but after some tuning my ARC is much faster than the 99 Viggen?

I'm a Saab girl, my current being a 2001 9-3 Viggen convertible. I've also owned two 2000 Honda Civic Sis, the ones with 160 horsepower with a 1.6 normally-aspirated engine that was available to the public at the time, but they were both stolen, the second before my license plate even came in the mail. That car was amazingly fun to drive, and the shifting was just… perfect. But, I was still a Saab girl at heart. I had driven a 1999 coupe (that was before they "detuned" it in the first three gears to cut down on the truly uncontrollable torque steer), but when I was test driving it, the salesman who rode with me told me to "watch [my] speed," and I looked down and I was going very close to 100 mph! I knew I’d get into trouble, and kept my base 1999 9-3. But, about two years ago, my fiancé - knowing that was my dream car above all others - sniped one off eBay for a bit over $3000. We flew to Tampa to pick it up, and drove it home. We haven't had any major issues, but I do envy you, because it seems that you have plenty of sources for used parts and facilities to repair a Saab. I live in New Orleans, so if I run into trouble needing to be towed, I need to go to Houston or Memphis. There is a bit of body flex going over railroad tracks, or even just the crappy roads that are rampant in the "Big Sleazy." But, my Viggen has 235 horsepower from a 2.3L engine, and a higher-output turbo and a better intercooler. It has about 137,000 miles, uses no oil - full synthetic all the time - but, MAN! Can that car GO!!! I can be in the most horrible mood, and get into my car, get onto the freeway, and be comfortably at 75 mph before I need to merge! The sound of the turbo spooling up brings a huge smile to my face every single time. But, my disadvantage is that Saabs of any year are SO RARE down here that nearly every time we see another one on the road, we both honk at each other. I lived in Minnesota from 1994 until 2007, and they were EVERYWHERE! As it is, I still have to call a friend up there who owns a Citroen, and he'll put me on a three-way call to his Saab guy, so he can tell me what to do if something weird happens. But, I'm taking it to Houston sometime soon, and getting a 6-point subframe brace and new motor and tranny mounts put on, so, yeah, in my part of the world, it's getting hard to find (used) parts for them, and I want to put the E-code headlights on, but I have to find a used set, because Sweden won't send them if the car will be driven in North America. But, I love my car. I can honestly say I've never cried from happiness until my fiancé showed me the pic of what he got me on eBay. I seriously lost it, I didn't believe people could cry from happiness, but I know now! My brother lives in Baltimore; if I'm ever in the area with my car, I'll send both of y'all messages and you can drive one of the 738 2001 Viggen convertibles that were made, it may just convert you :-)

Kari K. Great story, My 19 yr old daughter bought herself a used 5-door Viggen while she still had her N driver's license a month before turning 18. I was a little concerned as I hadn't seen the car and was working out of province at the time. Turned out to be okay I. spite of its rebuild status. I've done some general Mtc to it, but believe she made a good investment. Love the power and it even gets good mileage, matching or exceeding my 04 9-3 Linear. She had wanted to sell the car a year ago for financial reasons, but now loves it so much, is unlikely to part with it. Truly a great car that brings a smile to your face when driving it.

How to keep your SAAB 9-3 from sludging: 1. Remove turbo heat shield and toss it in the trash. It is doing nothing but concentrating heat on the motor. Ditto with the plastic dealie that sits on top. 2. Wrap the catalytic converters. Both of them, all the way up the turbo flange. 3. Use only premium synthetic motor oil.

@@SY-ml5nl Yes the triangly deal around the oil filler. Wrap with titanium heat shield wrap. It's a little tricky to do the second cat with the exhaust and engine in the car, but that's the one that really needs it.

Wonderful. I have both of your cars, a 2001 Volvo CC, and a 2001 SAAB cabriolet. The Volvo is silver and the SAAB is an exact replica of the blue SAAB, except it is a 5 speed, and runs like a scalded cat. It has a 113,000 miles and has a pant-load problems, top doesn't work, control system for heat/cooling under dash does not work, cracked power coils, worn out plugs, needs tires, and a the seats need some attention (I may replace them). Good news, brand new top. But it is a nice original car that I will hopefully sort out. It was free. I take ebay pictures for a large local salvage yard, and when a lady brought it in when I was there taking pictures. I asked the boss about it and said I could have it. I had started on it but the Volvo popped for $2500 so I jumped on it. It is in nice nice original condition so I'm getting it sorted first. A SAAB (Volvo too, but to a lesser extent) in South Carolina is like a fart in church. It is perfect for my photography business and for towing my small boat. My association with Volvos goes back many years. I was director of automotive advertising for TNYT and knew all the car manufacturers. About 30 years ago I bought a Volvo wagon directly from Volvo in Rockleigh, NJ. Executives at Volvo don't drive red cars so after the ad campaign it had to go. It was a Ferrari red one (Ferrari painted it for them) they used in all their ads, "If Ferrari Built a Wagon This Would Be It." I have pictures of it. Wonderful car, and the techs at Volvo had it really tricked out. It was a 4-speed with OD. Everyone wanted to buy it from me. Sadly it was badly rear-ended and went to Volvo in the sky. Saved the family. I checking in on Kyle and plans to used his exploits as a guide. As a Yankee from Massachusetts and Connecticut I've been around both makes for a long time. Thank you, you are a gift from the Volvo gods and Kyle is the gift from the SAAB gods. Rush L. Workman Prosperity, SC

I have owned an OG 9-3, NG 9-3 and now 9-5 Aero, and I recommend the latter due to best built quality, more room and better options (although the NG 9-3 has less rust issues). The 9-5 Wagon is super spacious but even if it weighs ALOT for a car like this, it hauls very quickly!

I have a SAAB 9-3 5-Door Maptun Stage 2 (230 hp) and a Ferrari California (490 hp). I can say with all honesty that the steering feel of the SAAB and the Ferrari are pretty close. I realize one is FWD and the other is RWD, but the steering feel is about the same. The Ferrari is actually a little lighter and the SAAB steering is a little bit more communicative. Blows my mind when my carbon fiber LED steering wheel alone in the Ferrari costs many times more than the SAAB itself. My SAAB engine is very smooth. It doesn’t vibrate like your Vert. A 5 door is just stiffer. I have found that the Liqui Moly Ceratec helps a lot with the engine smoothness too.

C900, before they jump up more in price, a 9-3 2.8 Aero, or a Dame Edna 9-5 Aero. If you have a bunch of cash, go 99 Viggen, 9-3X, 9-3 Turbo X, or NG 9-5 Aero. But if you really want a unicorn, find you a 9-4X Aero.

Saab convertibles look nice but it is a very bendy chassis. You can watch the door gaps changing when you go along. The earlier 900 of this shape had issues with the bulkheads splitting down the middle due to stress. Nice cruzer but shite in corners and bumpy roads.

Good cars but you really need to do your homework before committing to buying one. Checking for timing chain noise, blown seals, oil sludge, pcv upgrades. These things can be a complete money pit. They can be had for almost no money here in Sweden. They are everywhere, but many have utterly nackered engines

I have a V70 T5, and I think the turbo placement is very good, there is air flowing around it . There aren't many premature turbo deaths on these engines, which can't be said for the Saab. And why would you want 'good access' to the turbocharger? Normally you don't have to maintain it anyway.

I just got a 2003 9³ SE convertible (automatic), I was wondering if all Saabs have the dead space in gas pedal or if that was just mine? When you first press pedal there is like one or two inches that does nothing after dead space then it works like a normal gas pedal. Also the brake pedal, I noticed he said the brakes are a little mushy- well mine you have to press them pretty hard for them to work, it's a little scary, but it actually stops just fine but you really have to get in it is there a way to fix that? I'm used to brand new cars so it's a big change driving this compared to my new Camaro that's my daily driver lol! I have driven older cars before but this seems quit a bit worse.

IMO After owning one Saab G2 900 and two 9000, to a married man, the 9000 2.3 with a turbo, in any form, auto or manual, CD CC and esp the latter years' CS, can get a family from a single couple to a full two kid family. The 2.3 CSE is esp easy to mod from 170 bhp to 230, and 270 tops, with ECU remapping, a change in the turbo air control flap and la voilà, une nouvelle voiture!

The PCV is not the issue. It'll drive like shit long before a defective PCV system is any danger to the engine. Have you actually tried to put a large sump on a 9-3? Originally, there's less than an inch between the second cat and the sump. You can't remove the OEM sump without unbolting the motor.

it's totally worth owning a Saab, but I always make the point of not recommending anyone other than Saab enthusiast to own these cars. My point is strictly mathematical: unless you do the work yourself, by far, the cost outweighs the benefit. Most people are better off paying the $189 bucks to lease a Civic for 36mo. They'll spend far far less in costs and get to drive a new car. and with the gas savings in driving a Civic you actually only spend 10 payments per year comparing to an old-er 9-3. AND if you own a biz and can write the lease off, that's another couple of payments back in your taxes, so your real-dollar leasing cost on a brand new Civic comes down to about 126 bucks per month.

GM lied to SAAB in Sweden for many years. They promise them to expand their market in the North America and in 2000 they bought them completely out. However, they took all their SAAB research and innovation mainly from the previous Saab 900 and soon after bankrupt them. Mainly not to have SAAB competition on the market anymore. This SAAB 9-3 shown in this video had over 2000 modification from the previous SAAB 900 ant it is was made with many US and North American parts. This means it had garbage parts comparing to original SAAB cars made is Sweden and Finland. This is very sad story how Americans do the car business with a small very reputable company abroad. Don't trust ever GM cars and their manufacturing practices Stay away from GM cars if you can.

Broken rear spring (due to hitting a pothole), seized brake caliper, and “CIM failure” which turned out to be a flat battery. Car is heading for 150,000 miles and is far more reliable than our VW transporter van, which cost way more to purchase and keep on the road. Maybe I got lucky with mine, at the moment it feels like I’ll get another 50,000 miles out of it yet 🤞
