Many newer vehicles have more technology now, especially when it comes to safety, fuel economy, and infotainment systems, thus many newer vehicles need larger batteries to power those items and that's why batteries are getting more expensive now.

My Grand Cherokee has two batteries. And it’s a standard ice vehicle.

@markhagopian3257 I have a 2020 Honda CR-V non hybrid, and the cheapest battery I could find for my vehicle is around $200. Like I said, the more technology these vehicles have, it seems that simple stuff like car batteries get more expensive.

Mines a standard 17 larado… one battery is 160.. The other battery is about 275 or so… But that’s not as bad as the headlights needing the whole front clip off the car change.

Lol are ICE car better? They are containing hundreds of small explosion per minute with many moving parts, In where I live they are down 50% after year one. Batteries are expensive now but CATL and BYD are planing to cut them down about 80% by 2030.

The BEV still has wipers, brake fluid, brakes, tires, a 12V battery and washer fluid ALL of which need to be changed, the tires are more expensive and the brake service can be challenging. I forgot the battery cooling system and A/C.

Yes, even simple stuff like car batteries are getting more expensive now. I have a 2020 Honda CR-V non hybrid, and the cheapest battery I could find for my particular vehicle is around $200. That's one disadvantage about newer cars it that the more electronic accessories and technology these vehicles have, a stronger battery is required to power them, which means more money.

My experience is like yours. Since 1980 I drive Honda and Toyotas to nearly 200k or more. Never a major repair over $1000. The one GM van I owned, can't say the same....

I regretted selling my 2005 Sienna AWD for $2500. Insurance only cost me $20/mo for that car, I should've kept it for towing stuff. My Sienna was only 105k miles too. 2nd biggest regret in my life.

Oh yeah....I've seen those Teslas and Chevrolet Bolts take a nosedive in value and it's just been a year. 50% off. It sounded temptin to me but then I remembered that the cost of repair/replacement is far too risky.

Insurance costs are also going up due to home charging. Its the perfect storm to get home and leave an EV unattended charging overnight in a garage. Charging is the most likely time the battery might catch on fire. It's rare but its another angle for insurance to charge a little more. Both home and vehicle insurance and as EV's age and there are more old ones this will happen more often.

Don't worry they will spread that cost to all of us.

Exactly , and no one in their right mind is going to want to replace an EV battery in an out of warranty EV , so it is a fair bet , as a huge amount of these shitboxes get some age on them , many people will be selling them for peanuts and buying a new car , which in my view is hardly green if the vehicle is abandoned after only 8 or 10 years . I have ICE cars that ran just fine with just basic maintenance , one being 30 years old , my other one which was the family taxi , tow car and work horse which even up to the time i retired the old girl , still had a beautiful driveline that still ran like a clock , with an un opened engine , gear box and diff and the only reason i did not give it a freshen up and keep her going for another 10 years was the body was very beat up from a hard life and also having hail damage . And not in my wildest dreams could i imagine any Ev lasting as long as Either of those examples , and this sort of thing is not uncommon on the old conventional cars that where built to be easily repaired and maintained , and made to last a long service life without a fortune being spent on them , which if we cut through the bullshit , Evs are just not built that way , and Evs by majority do not even have close to the range to start with , so they suck from the very first day of ownership .

Speakers. 500 watt peak but you may only ever see that a few times in the life of the speaker and only if every condition is met. I say this because it really is like anything. What they claim you get and what you actually get is 2 different things. One thing I didn't think of since I wont ever own an EV is heating. Heat requires a lot of energy. So they must base this on the perfect conditions possible for their range estimates which is very misleading.

Well , half the problem is The EV sellers tend to shrug that off as "just not going to happen" , and tell the customer it will easily see out the life of the car :) , ( but how long is the useful life of that battery and car with buggerall range ?) ! The other good story is "oh , by then battery will be cheap , dont worry about it" , and this bullshit has been said all along , and have a look today , they are far from being cheap , and if you have paid extra to get a bit more range with a bigger battery , guess what , you will be paying even more when that battery requires a replacement ! Yep , and aside from that , its not uncommon to find even in the city , some sort of bit of crap that has fallen off the back of a truck or tradies vehicle that is right in the middle of the road that often you dont see until its too late . And country roads are no doubt even more prone to this , i remember one night in my old ICE car hitting a bloody big solid wombat at speed at night time , which was like hitting a boulder , had i been in an electric car , i would have real concerns that there would be battery damage .

Word of advice for a first time ev buyer. Don't over buy. Smaller is better, and it's not idea for roadtrips. I have a chevy bolt ev, and a 240v charger at home. It takes 6 hours to charge 0-100%. Pretty much every other ev on the road is twice the price, plus twice the cost and time to charge.

depends entirely on the car , but if you have a good quality ICE car , the engine should easily last 10 to 15 years with minimal maintenance cost ( AND buggerall range degradation ), and even more years than that are likely , and ICE engines are generally easy to repair and maintain as long as you have a good one . @@saibtsheb5590

If this type of battery technology is so expensive, you can imagine the price of the solid-state battery vehicles. Electric cars were invented over 100 years ago, but they failed. They will fail again. We are still not ready to move entirely to EVs.

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that they will fail. There is a place for them, but it's a niche. I don't believe the ICE engines we currently use will be around forever, but they will be around a LOT longer than most people think. Diesels alone will live on for the next 75-100 years. Absolutely. This is why insurance rates for EV's can be very high.

Half the problem is , the chemical reaction that ages the battery pack goes through all the batteries , and just replacing one or two cells that has become faulty gives no guarantee , tomorrow another will not become faulty , and no one has yet built a battery crystal ball that can tell us this . And this is another reason that people should be very careful about replacing a knackered battery pack with a less expensive rebuilt or refurbished battery pack , which is likely will be the worst individual cells are removed and replaced into an old battery pack , how long will one of these refurbished packs last , the answer is How long is a piece of string ?

Very few people are anti ev. What most people are who are against evs, are against them because the technology isn’t here yet to make them a viable alternative outside of a few niche situations. We need much better batteries where they take up much less space and can be protected better, and make their range comparable to combustion vehicles. We also need much better charging technology. And finally, no electric grid is able to support a anything near half the cars on the road being an ev. So electric grids need hundreds of billions in upgrades if not trillions depending on where you live. But the issue with this is that who do you think will pay for the upgrades? We will by paying more for electricity.

I'm anti-EV. The idea that they are eco-friendly is a sham. The charging stations aren't powered by forest elves who run on treadmills. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says that 79% of energy consumption in the United States comes from fossil fuels (natural gas, oil and coal). Another 8% is nuclear power. Total renewable energy (hydroelectric, wind, solar, biomass and wood) accounts for just 13% of "green" electric technology. Regardless of the efficiency of the battery, EVs must rely for most of their energy on fossil fuels. Battery degradation means more frequent trips to the charging kiosk or home charger, which means even greater use of fossil fuels. Don't be charmed by the look of a shiny, new EV. The problem is the batteries. The extraction and refining of lithium, cobalt, manganese and nickel denudes forests, creates huge piles of tailings and damages ecosystems. You don't see any of that in the backseat of an EV. The sources are places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, where cobalt is strip-mined or dug by underground laborers. About 68% of the world's cobalt comes from the DRC. As for the sorry state of the U.S. electricity grid, check ERCOT, the Electric Reliability County of Texas. Texas has its own grid, untethered from the rest of the country. As such EROCT frequently asks residents and businesses to reduce power consumption during peak daytime hours. Texas is not always windy or sunny, as reports from Jan. 16, 2024, indicate. Nearly 85% of energy production is coming from fossil fuels, mostly natural gas. Remember February 2021? Massive blackouts lasting for days led to brownouts and the deaths of about 300 Texans. Pray that your EV has enough juice to get you home. You'll find a cold, powerless EV charger in your garage, but at least you will be safe and not stuck along a highway.. My involvement in environmental action goes back to 1972. When I first heard about EVs, I thought this was salvation. Then I began researching. Looking at the facts made me strongly anti-EV.

I've been driving the same ice car since August 2008 and I've had NO reduction in range in all that time. Even if I had to replace the engine, it's still really cheap compared to replacing a battery pack.

You also forgot. EVs are to be used as a status symbol, i.e. I own an EV. As such these cars should only be driven once a week around the neighborhood OR to an awards ceremony to show your commitment to the movement. NEVER DRIVE YOUR EV DAILY. Use your Hummer for that!

ALL batteries are affected by extreme cold and/or heat. How many days of service do you get out of one charge assuming you drive fifty miles a day to and from home and work five days a week with an additional fifty per week miles of non-work related driving added in to include shopping, doctors' appointments, etc., etc.? How long does it take your L-2 to recharge your current EV from 20% to 80%? Hours or minutes? With ever increasing utility costs how much are you actually saving as opposed to what you were spending on gasoline per month? In the event of a power outage in your area do you have a reliable alternative means of transportation? By the way, don't let an EV battery pack get wet for very long. Batteries in general do not respond well to water intrusion. I wish you well with your EV but until battery packs don't roughly equal 60% of a vehicle MSRP and EVs are not totaled by insurance companies for what would be minor damage on any non-EV I can't justify purchasing such a vehicle. They are just too "deposable" for my taste and needs.

That's what I've seen as well. I was looking with a colleague on the price of 2018 Tesla Model 3 LRs that started around $27k with about 40-60k miles on it, which would seem pretty good to get in on the EV hype. But we see that at 50k mi, you lose the limited warranty, then at either by Year 2026 or 120k miles. (you lose the Drive train and Battery warranty). When it comes down to it, unless one is driving their car constantly to justify the gas savings, even used EVs are too risky. We know the batteries need to be replaced, can't be repaired as-of, resulting in an easy $15k+ expense. I've been taught that if you're paying over 50% of what the car is worth to do repair work, just replace the whole car. And so I started to see the used EV market differently where the reason we see these used EVs flood the market, bringing down the car value is because the original owners are essentially leasing the cars and trading in/up to when their warranty expires. And I'm sure Tesla knows this.

@chriscary9269 I understand the 80% recommendation. It is because as the batteries recharge the Li ions must find a place on the cathode, the electron must reside on the anode. As the battery get closer to full charge, it becomes harder to find charge locations. Thus the rate of charge drops, and the heat goes up. I can understand using a public charging station might lead to a longer period of time, and delay others from using those facilities. I have heard that 90% is an acceptable level. And even on occasions a 100% charge is acceptable when starting on a long trip. I don't understand the 20% restriction. Is this because of a lack of public charging stations? You risk not reaching your destination? I wonder why a completely empty battery could cause a recharging problem. Don't know what that problem could be. Maybe it is a long charging time a public stations. It seems 20% is too high for a home recharge. 10% might be more reasonable. Can you explain your understanding of these limits? From where did you get these guidelines?

Solid State fails like a bomb in the lab, far too often. They charge fast, but they can discharge at the same speed, like a capacitor. Dangerous.

I pay the price for all of the electricity I use. I pay for inspections, and all maintenance. If I ever need to replace the battery I will pay for it, without government support. This vehicle is not a toy!! I am not an adult with a pseudo child brain. My EV is the safest vehicle I have ever owned. That is why I bought it. This past month it prevented an accident, involving a driver who pull out from a side road, directly across my lane. Because a turning vehicle ahead of me, was turning into the side road, blocked the driver's view of my vehicle, that vehicle pull out and stopped 90 degrees across my lane, when the driver realized my presence. My vehicle reacted quicker than my reaction time and prevented the accident. I was driving the speed limit, with the cruise control and the safe distance mechanism active. That is the way I always drive. I see many vehicles substantially exceeding the speed limit; cutting off other drivers and riding the "tail" of the car in front of them. This is a "free" society. I have no right to object to what they are doing. I look forward to improvements that will make this vehicle even safer, so that I may live to see another day. Green energy is not my concern. If it improves the environment all the better. I don't think your assumption that "green" is the only reason for anyone to buy an EV. Be aware that electricity can be created from: coal, oil (anything that burns), solar, wind, hydro-dams, thermo (subterranean) heat, ocean waves, nuclear fusion or fission. An ICE vehicle only runs on gasoline. Electric utilities can choose the cheapest source. The money for oil goes the oil companies, (OPEC), and to the country where it was extracted. Please note that when an ICE vehicle applies brakes, power to the wheels is not disengaged and continues to push the vehicle forward. It is only the friction of the brakes that stops the forward motion. Eventually the transmission will drop to a lower gear (not neutral). When the ICE vehicle is completely stopped, the engine continues to burn fuel. When stopping an EV, the flow of electricity reverses, thus retarding the forward motion. and the reverse flow recaptures the energy of forward motion to recharge the battery. When stopped (e.g. at a stop sign) no electricity is flowing, none is being used.

My home charge for my EV costs about $10, for 224 miles. 10 gallons at 20 mpg is 200 miles. $10 vs $30. Now if you use a public charger, you may see a $20 to $30 cost for the charge, Before I had the home charger, I had a free charging pass from the manufacturer. While I paid $0, the station reported around $24 per charge, and this was when I was charging on a frequent schedule - it was free, why not charge? Gas stations are charging in the area of $30.00 per tank. A charging station is business to maximize profit. So look, $30 for the same amount of miles seems reasonable. Why charge less?
