EV fear sounds a lot like Unleaded, safety & pollution-controlled fear of the 1970s. I have gotten Residential Solar and getting a lower price new EV soon. Just run your ICE vehicle, in your garage, for 3 minutes every day. It’ll give you a vague sense of what you do on those 3hour drives (that so many claim are common & critical to happiness)

Same here. I live in an apartment, at-home charging and heated garage to prevent the battery from freezing or emptying itself trying to not freeze when it can be -15C or worse for a week at a time where I live is highly unappealing no matter how much better pure-BEVs get. I'd be far more interested in a 40kWh Na-ion battery pack (manufacturers are aiming for a -40C to +70C operating temperature range for automotive cells) backed by a 15kW range-extending generator of some sort for road trips, winter heat and not having to worry about sparse 50kW "fast-charging" infrastructure.

You must have an enormous bladder or not need to eat or sleep? Mot EVs are coming out with 400+ mile range which is equivalent to 6 hours of driving. Most EV take 20-45 minutes to charge to 80% which give you time to go toilet, grab food, sight seeing etc.. while the EV charges. If you have children it helps with their restlessness to stop every 4-5 hours. So this argument about waiting for the EV to charge is pointless in this day in age.

When you rent, or live in most condos, home charging is impossible. A day trip that I'm planning tomorrow to L.A. from Las Vegas is 600 miles (return). With one business appointment, I'd still have to recharge my battery. Those hours of charging in downtown are going to be expensive in cost, but also throws me into outbound L.A. Rush Hour at its absolute worst. With a Hybrid, such hassle is totally avoidable. Besides, the range of a Prius is 550-600 miles. If I drive fastidiuosly, I may make it without any fill-up at all! The only advantage with an electric is the blinding acceleration. Fortunately, I put my "boy racer days" behind me decades ago. A new Prius is still tops on my list in 2025. It simply makes more sense.

The sequence should be HEV, PHEV, BEV. Each forces, in order, battery technology and then, BEV infrastructure while allowing for petrol infrastructure to economically continue through end of useful life while battery technology infrastructure and manufacturing time to evolve to being economically viable. It took decades for carbon based fueling to evolve to where it is now. Battery tech will take equally as long to mature to being practical and it’s still not entirely clear it even will.

The vehicle was connected to the charger for an hour, and I got a whopping 4 additional miles of range. The trip back to my hotel was full of frustration and worry. I made it back to the hotel with 24 miles to spare. Fortunately, the hotel had a charger. It took all night to get the vehicle to a full charge. The only upside is that I didn’t have to pay for either chargers. Until the infrastructure gets to a point where you can charge the battery in about the same amount of time that it would take to fill a car with gas, we’re not ready for total electrification. Why should we punish ourselves while millions of other people are still thoroughly enjoying the fun of gasoline powered racing cars, off-road/all terrain vehicles, demolition derby and monster trucks etc? There is no compelling reason at all to rush and get am EV or a hybrid vehicle now. Eventually one day (at least 10 years from now) when gasoline engines are banned EV's will have to be adopted regardless of how inconvenient they may be. But to keep a hybrid car during the transition is absolutely unnecessary besides the concept of having two different systems that can go wrong under one bonnet is quite silly. Nobody wants a hybrid watch that a mechanical movement would charge a battery after a few hours running period and then a battery would kick in and take over! Imagine the money that will be wasted to maintain and service that complex watch. Wouldn't it be wiser to buy a pure automatic watch or a pure quartz watch in the first place?

The power our 10.8 kw solar array produces charges the battery so we don’t have to buy expensive power. What’s nice is the vehicle has a ICE so we don’t have any range anxiety and it’s like having a gas station in our garage. We’re very happy with our RAV4 Prime and it was worth the almost 2 year wait.😊

I used to be excited about the EV idea . Along with the cost and range issue are the fire risk associated with lithium batteries. There are new batteries coming but governments are pushing this agenda right now . The insurance industry is now alerted to this fire issue and rates will increase dramatically. Also Toyota is still using NMH batteries in their hybrids .

Similar with my 2019 Niro PHEV. But it only made economic sense because of the Fed Tax credit. We drive our "city" car about 6,000/ year. If I bought a new vehicle today, a PHEV at current prices and no economic incentives would not make economic sense until about 48,000 (8 yrs) miles but an HEV would after about 3-4 years.

When we got home we talked about it and both feel we should just pay the tax and not buy a new car. There just isn't anything good out there for a decent price and we aren't really new car buyers. Tesla? Well we live in North Dakota. What about insurance and tires? Are they free? I guess we'll keep our 2002 Buick Park Avenue with 275k miles for a while longer. I'm honestly considering putting a $2,500 transmission in it because the engine is great. You say that is such an expensive repair. I live in an independent house and I've entirely covered my roof with 12 kW solar panels, with a 20kW accumulator battery. I generate approx 14 MW of electricity / year, equivalent to more than 20,000$ in 5 years, i.e. the cost of panels/inverter/battery. (in Italy electricity is fairly expensive). I own a PHEV and I think that this is an absolutely excellent solution. Every morning I have a full battery yielding 45 miles average range, for commuting and in town trips. During week ends I have unlimited range, to go basically everywhere I choose. Beyong that, I've almost zeroed the cost of electricity for the house.

How much sense a PHEV makes (at least in terms of cost to own and operate) depends on price of car, price of fuel in your home area (both electricity & gas) and how many miles you drive annually. In general if you are not racking up > 10,000 miles / year, the payback period for a PHEV is longer than most people keep their cars. By the way, I have a Niro PHEV but the US tax credit brought the cost down to that of an HEV so it made sense for me. YMMV.

Currently, an ideal setup for a 2-car family is a hybrid (non plug-in) and a short-range EV. That's what we went for. My Leaf I bought used, and within the five years of ownership it paid for itself in fuel and maintenance costs fully. It is a negative cost car now. And despite its short range (around 60 miles now) it takes care of most errands and is being driven MORE miles per year than the hybrid. All long-range duties are handled by the hybrid of course. Moreover, we live in a rental apartment, and I can't charge at home! So I simply charge at work, an go home at the end of the working day with full "tank". Nothing breaks in this thing for there is nothing to break down. Tires last around 40,000 miles, so around 30% less than a gasoline counterpart, that's the only extra expense.

A lot of companies don’t want charging stations on their property, plus a good portion of them share parking lots with other companies or general public parking, so charging stations don’t work. A local Mazda dealership here has a chargers station, but it’s in front of a regular parking spot with no indication that it’s for an EV, so anyone can park in front of it. From what I have seen, other companies are doing the same thing. IKEA has been the only place that has dedicated parking spots for EVs.
