Twitch's main problem I think is a lack of transparency, making every big decision seem reactionary and random. Publicly available hard guidelines and some sort of loose company roadmap would go a LONG way to keeping viewers, and especially creators, around.

This honestly makes me think Twitch will exist, same with RU-vid, but the other stream sites like Kick and the others won't in 7 years. For one big reason. RU-vid has Google, saving a massive amount in logistics and costs regarding infrastructure, and Twitch has Amazon providing exactly the same thing. They are the only sites that might turn a profit due to the backing of those two's web services for nearly no cost.
@outgroup

@soidmorc the reason I think YT will kill Twitch is they are slowly stealing feature by feature from twitch. My main YT channel Tuelz I stream alot and noticed like every 4 mo the they steal another feature from twitch. I'm only at 300k plus subs and can make 8-10k a month thur RU-vid. Literally more than 95% of twitch streamers. And I'm not even big at all or get crazy amount of views. I understand if your the top 1% why you stay on Twitch but for everyone else why. I built a 300k channel in less then 1 year. I was streaming on Twitch for 5years before that. There's vids I made 9 months ago that earn 10 dollars a day still. If RU-vid keeps taking features like they've been doing Pat is right Twitch will be gone in 5 yeara

Great video Patrick, small addition. I work in adssales and the set up of Amazon (as you stated is the owner of Twitch). And they do offer a lot of data on Twitch, but they use the data of Amazon users they can also track back on twitch. They also offer it other way around, in that advertisers can find the twitch user on other platform where the Amazon DSP (Demand-Side Platform) can buy ads. Also they do offer ads (display and video) in the Amazon DSP, but you can only access the Amazon DSP if you are an aknolwegde buyer (like ad-agencies and big corporations). In the mean time, RU-vid (google) offers two DSP platforms: Google Ads, which can be accessed by you, me and the small bakery on the corner. And they offer DV360 for companies and agencies spending an x amount (demand which region we are talking about). So RU-vid ads are more accesable for the common man, Twitch inventory has some automation in place, with a lot of data involved. The other part that you address: branded content for Twitch (and every other platform focusing on the youth, which are mostly edgy in the eyes of the advertisers ) are hard to sell. But I don't think those are being sold by Twitch, more likely by the representation of the creators, just like youtube. Long story short: Great stuff, but there is way more being the scene then we can see.
@devonwilliams2423
@devonwilliams2423 Год назад
Yeah, the video looks incredibly good, BUT you can easily see all the misinformation contained in it if you look at the comments. I don't think it's a good precedent to create "factual" based videos and correct only half of the mistakes in the comments where 99% of people won't even see them. One of the biggest issues is his comment on AWS and how Stake is having to pay such a high premium. One of the admins of Steak has already said that they broke even in one of the very first quarters. Your correction on this, as well as the three other corrections I see in the comments above yours, are necessary. From what it looks like, in my opinion (so, just like Patrick), the misinformation in this video outweighs the factual information. - In the slightest chance that patrick sees this comment, obviously I'm a fan and I'm entertained from your videos and watch every single one of them.

10:57 streaming is meant to be done for leisure. When it becomes an obligation that’s when it starts feeling not fun. I’m not a streamer but I know it’s a tough balance that hundreds of streamers go through, and it’s not just because they signed a contract. Twitch is a lot of streamer’s primary source of income so more than likely they will stream even if they aren’t having fun because they need the money to live and/or be happy with their lives. One more thing. Twitch is a people person job and acting job. Even if you don’t show your face you need to have charisma or some other characteristics that attract more viewers. This of course leads to streamers acting out for their audience, putting on a persona, and other general acts that can take a toll on streamers’ minds and even health. Streaming is not easy. It’s sometimes hard. I have nothing but respect for everyone out there
@drlongshaftmd

what ur describing is just a job. everyone has to work a job to put food on their plate and sleep inside. streamers have the luxury of almost no overhead expenses, no commute time, and the complete freedom to make their own hours and choose what content they put out. nobody is entitled to a streaming career, especially if charisma and personality aren't things that come naturally to them. literally hundreds of millions of people in the US alone find a way to get by each day without a cushy streaming job

Growing an audience on that platform will be almost impossible for you if you're new to streaming. There are no quantifiable measures on Twitch that can be used to gauge how entertaining a streamer is to viewers. Twitch currently uses a viewer count-based system to suggest videos to its viewers, in contrast to random videos on RU-vid that gain traction from an intriguing thumbnail, title, or description. The problem is Twitchs’ data collecting methods are just too small to create any useable data structures that will be the website more efficient. In case you weren't aware, a new Twitch user is more inclined to click on a stream with a larger viewer count after watching one with less. Because Twitch lack a reliable methodology that determines which characters viewers would most likely gravitate toward based on their viewing history, newer streamer are less inclined to be watched, especially when the front page usually promotes the worst of them. Example Of The Methodology: A viewer watches Kai Cenat, thus the system updates your feed with individuals that have some of Kai's traits. In the end, your feed displays individuals like XQC, YourRage, etc. The algorithm will occasionally draw in newer streamers it thinks have similar traits. Giving new streamers with potential a better chance to join communities with like-minded people. Just like RU-vid, but for streaming. The problem is that Twitch doesn't have a personal feed that displays streamers who have been viewed for a specific amount of time, such as at least 25 minutes, in a way that is representative of their personality. Instead, a bar representing the number of established viewers is displayed. The current system allows for the number of established streamers to remain constant, increasing by modest amounts roughly every few years, unless new streamer act super friendly to well-known predatory individuals on Twitch. This, in turn, raises the barrier to entry and supports a system in which gatekeepers can toss you out at any time if you have a bad interaction with one of their friends, or the streamer themselves. Additionally, this system encourages faking it, leeching, and other survival strategies like being a wet rag. All in an effort to succeed on a platform that handles stream infractions, etc, differently depending on the viewer count of a streamer.

The one point i agree with Knight on is the "Burnout" part. Shes kind of right, playing 4 hours a day Monday Through Friday and having your weekends off is literally half of a full time job. I work an 8-9 hour job every single day. Sure wish i could claim burnout and still want to get paid lmao. These streamers cite burnout because they're streaming 10+ hours a day for months on end.
@anirudhviswanathan3986

It's most likely the case that streamers work a ton that's NOT shown publicly, ie, managing their own stream experience, working with an agent potentially, communicating with sponsors, preparing their content. The amount of work an entertainer does NOT only count by the time they do their job publicly.

One point I also never see brought up is RU-vid has a vastly superior video player. One notable example that I use all the time is you can pause livestreams, go do things, then resume on higher playback speed until you are caught up. You can also easily rewind the stream to rewatch something you missed.

If you are watching a streamer with your RU-vid account, they should be able to target ads better than if it was Twitch. They have all of google’s data to pull from. The thing that’s tricky though is if youtube becomes the main streaming site, and there is an inevitable controversy, RU-vid is risking another adpocolypse.

I also feel like a lot of it can be considered a phase. I remember when Twitch gained major prominence with the Twitch Plays Pokémon. That was so innovative back then. Personally, for me, I could never watch someone play a video game. Because I would want to play it. In some ways, I feel like livestream gaming, for example, could be on its way out. At least that’s how I see it.
@ma.2089

There’s plenty of ppl who enjoy watching a playthrough of a game after they’ve played it themselves to vicariously experience it again. A fun game with a fun streamer, along w/ their jokes or opinions on the game can be very enjoyable. So your point about why you wouldn’t enjoy it doesn’t fly totally, since plenty of ppl play the games and watch playthroughs. Esp if the games are story based. Playthroughs of games have lost prominence a long time ago, so i doubt it’ll be “on its way out”, when it’s already out. There’s a dedicated audience for them cuz they’re there for the streamer and not the game itself.
@corimyers4985
@corimyers4985 Год назад
It’s his opinion so it doesn’t have to ‘fly’. Is what it is. But you both make interesting points. I also was never into watching other people play. I don’t really understand the draw beyond someone telling a story using the game or creating comedy. Or if I want to see what the game is like before I buy it. But I also noticed when me and my fellow podcasters did Watch Us Play (we use yo play with people but men and boys find it hard to play games with women and not get weird ie wanting to date us, stalk us etc.) that people did like it. Mostly due to our commentary or so we were told. But I personally like to play alone. As outgoing as I seem on social media and podcast, it takes a lot of energy to play with strangers and be amicable. What has me vexed is game developers get NONE of the revenue. And inarguably there would be no streamers without the game in the first place. Imagine someone using something you made to make millions and they don’t even know your name. Even guitarists know who made their guitar, painters know who created their tools. Most streamers don’t know who made their game and give no credit, have even heard some complain about a game (not reviewing it, complaining about it). As the newest Indie Game Dev, I find that hurtful…the disrespect.
