Just helped my daughter lease her first car. I researched and drove the CX3 (small, cramped, underwhelming), Ford Escape (way over priced), Nissan Rogue (ugly, expensive) and then test drove the 2017 Outlander Sport. It is by FAR the best looking of the trucks tested. It also offers by FAR the most value for the money. They had a black one with black wheels and it looked more like a $35,000 truck.True 4wd, Android Car Play, heated seats, tilt/telescoping wheel and I'm 6'3" and can actually fit in the back seat!. I drove it with her for 3 days and not only does she love it, I loved it too. Especially for $240 a month with 15k mile allowance. The Mazda dealer said, "I don't know why Mitsubishi makes cars anymore." and now I know why he said that... because he's jealous. We love the Outlander sport.

Well said! Especially that last part about the dealership. I don't have one of these vehicles but it's on my short list of potential cars to buy. It like it because it's not as ubiquitous as the other "mainstream" vehicles. Its unique and doesn't try to be like the others. Good looking a great reat value too!

These are heavily discounted too! Best warranty, lowest cost of entry. Super reliable and good on gas!

Couldn't have said it better. Great warranty. Well-built. Dependable. Economical to drive. Enough power with the 2.4L. Solid all around car and great value for money. Only real shortcoming IMO is the interior style has gone stale. It's not bad, just blah now.

Dave doesn't realize these have great discounts and are amazing deals for what you get. He acts like Mitsubishi dealers are selling these at sticker price. This is much smaller than an Escape Dave not a direct competitor. I've sold Mitsubishis for over ten years.

MrNuggetface The Escape and Outlander Sport are both considered compact CUVs.

buildmorefarms100 Very true. My 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT 4x4 stickered for $32,940.00 and we got it for under $27,000.00!!! Ours was higher than most because we searched for one with every option and accessory such as: navigation package, rear park assist, bodyside modlings, larger rear spoiler, steel fuel door, mud guards, rear bumper silver under cover, tailgate chrome, chrome package (mirror and door handles), all weather package (remote start and all weather floor mats), cargo mat, cargo storage bin, led interior package (blue footwells, tailgate light, led dome over head lights), scuff plates, window rain guards and more!!! $5,000.00 worth of mitsubishi accessories all on from the factory this way. We still paid less than the base price of the GT before any options or accessories were added and thats impressive!!!

We own a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.4L GT 4X4 and could not be happier! We purchased it on 10/31/16 brand new. It was $32,940.00 and after Rebates and Discounts it was $26,700.00. Our GT was higher than most as it had the Optional Navigation Package, LED Interior Illumination Package (foot wells light up blue and has a cool round blue led light built into the tailgate), Upgraded LED Fog Lights to match the HID Headlights, Cargo Package, Remote Engine Start, Park Assist Package, Chrome Package, Sport Package with Larger Rear Spoiler and Steel Fuel Door, Mud Guards, Rear Silver Bumper Under Cover, Color Keyed Bodyside Moldings, Scuff Plates, Window Rain Guards, more!!! We also added Mitsubishi License Plate Frames and Mitsubishi Valve Stem Caps. It drives like a true SUV and sits high and does not feel like a wagon or hatchback (Honda HR-V) when you drive it. The ride is surprisingly good and handling is confident and we are getting around 26-27 mpg combined driving. You cant find a new SUV with all these Features, Capabilities, Safety, and Warranty for $27,000.00 loaded with everything. The Panoramic Roof and 710 Watt Rockford Fosgate Audio is amazing sounding. The remote start keyfob is really neat and digital and you can adjust it to run from 10 mins up to 30 mins and it lights up. The push start with keyless access on front doors and tailgate is so convenient. Also when sitting in the rear it has theater style seating so you sit above the front passengers and I read on Mitsubishis news page that helps prevent rear passengers from getting car sick. Also with the huge panoramic roof its like sitting in a car w/ova roof lol. It does not open which prefer because I always use AC. Now at night time it is lined with orange led mood lighting all around it and can be adjusted to 3 different levels, it makes this car unique and looking thru it at night is amazing. The rockford fosgate audio is unreal and has so many settings to get it just to your liking and wow can it kick! We looked at quiet a few SUVs but the ones we drove were the Buick Encore, Toyota Rav-4, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Tuscon and Kia Sportage. They were all nice Vehicles but in top trims loaded with the features we wanted they pushed upper 30K range ($36K - $40K), way to expensive. The HR-V however for the top trim was amazingly priced but it felt like a hatchback and not an SUV and the styling is very borning. In the end it came down to the Outlander Sport or the Encore. We chose this because of its styling, warranty, price, features, proven reliability record, safety, owner satisfaction, added accessories, 3 mode selectible 4x4 and not just AWD, and that it drove like a true SUV and not a car based type SUV. It sits high and has that SUV feeling to it. Sure the Encore rode smoother but we liked the Outlander Sport better than all the others as it gave everything we wanted at a much better price and with a long warranty. Even if others could have undercut the price we still would have chose the Outlander Sport GT as Mitsubishi’s are very reliable. The 2.4L 168 hrsp engine is really peppy and if you floor it it pushes you back in you seat a lil lol. Its not a race car but has plenty of power for me! When you put it in 4x4 lock you can really feel all 4 wheels gripping the ground. These 18 inch wheels are sharp and really add to its looks! We also owned a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage and traded it on the newly updated 2017 Mirage G4 SE and wow! I absolutely loved my 2015 Mirage ES CVT with Navigation. I loved it so much in fact when I saw the 2017 versions released we traded it and went with a 2017 Mirage G4 SE in the all new Wine Red Exterior and Light Gray Interior! My car stickered for $18,115.00 and I got it for $12,714.00 with rebates and dealer discounts. I was first going to get a Mystic Black 2017 Mirage GT but in the end decided on the Mirage G4 SE. Now mind you that is the top trim model fully loaded for $12,714.00! They had base model CVT Mirage and Mirage G4s for under $11,000.00 at Renn Kirby Mitsubishi I saw on the lot! I hear lots of people say you can get new Mirages in base trim for around $10,000.00... On top of that you get bluetooth, pw, pl, pm, keyless entry, keyless access, entry buttons on the driver door and trunk, cruise, steering wheel audio controls, auto climate control, ac, push button start, auto up down drivers window, apple car play and android auto, am/fm/cd/mp3/usb/bluetooth, back up camera, outside temperature display, fold down rear seat arm rest with cup holders, semi high contrast gauge cluster, outside temp display, 15 inch dark titanium alloy wheels, spare tire (many new expensive cars do not), height adjustable driver seat, speed sensitve windshield wipers, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, massive rear seat with oodles of legroom in the G4, fog lights, and so much more! Beat that Nissan Versa and Chevy Spark. If you want a reliable new car loaded with features, has a long warranty and huge discounts then go get a Mirage or Mirage G4. When you watch reviews and people bit h about the Mirages price being to high always remember you are never going to pay that there are always rebates and dealer discounts ranging between $2,000.00 and $5,000.00 depending on the dealer and mitsubishi rebate. It is the only car I will own now and this is my 8th new car before someone says it must be my first car and thats why I think it is a good car. I have owned a new 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage, 2013 Hyundai Elantra, 2010 Kia Soul, 2008 Hyundai Sonata, 2005 Chevy Cavalier, 2003 Hyundai Accent, 2002 Kia Rio. All of those were bought new as my 2017 Mirage G4 SE was and I owned 3 used cars before those. The Mirage and Mirage G4 are such neat little charismatic cars. Its so fun to rev up the 78 horsepower 3 cylinder engine and still get awsome mpg. They ride so smooth in town and on the highway. Dont listen to the negative critic reviews look at owner reviews because the owners love them So I say if you are thinking about a Mitsubishi go for it. The new Outlander Sport is a true feeling SUV with selectable 4X4 with a button (2WD, Auto 4X4, 4X4 Lock) and loaded with features, safety and an amazing warrnaty. Also most Mitsubishi owners love their cars as a girl I work with has a 2011 Lancer with well over 100,00 miles on it and still running strong no issues. My other coworker has had her Mirage 3 years and 21,000 miles later not a single problem and she will be buying another one in a year as its the only car she will buy now. Go for it and drive a Mitsubishi and you will want one lol. For 2018 they made several styling updates to the Outlander Sport and trim line and packaging changes. Plus restyled the interior center console, added all new infotainment systems that are really up to date, added sound insulation and more! So now their value equation is even better and they supply top notch reliability for many many years of trouble free motoring.

K McKenzie good information. My first newish car was a 2001 Montero Sport. I like Japanese styling and though the car wasn’t perfect....I wish I had kept it. The only issue for me is that I have three kids so an Outlander probably makes the most sense. Good luck with your new rides. I’m especially curious about your thoughts on the HRV. It’s very high praise to rank the Mitsubishi ahead of it. You gave good reasons too👊

Ewing Sharp thank you for the reply! Yes we love our 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT AWC and 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE! Mitsubishis are super reliable. At my work place alot of us drive Mitsubishi, 5 out of 20 works. One co worker drives a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES, another drives a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer and another girl drives a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander plus our 2 Mitsubishis. Every one of us will only buy Mitsubishi now. You cant beat the price, warranty, features, and so on. The Outlanders are super nice as well!!! We drove the HR-V and it just felt like a Hatchback to me and looked very car like. I was not a fan of the front seats either and if you research online Hondas have alot of complaints from first time buyers for front seat comfort, alot! Yes Hondas are great, reliable and hold their value but the Mitsubishi was a better fit for me with a longer warranty, way cheaper price, larger engine and more power, more aggressive looks, more features and more snow worthy 4x4 system (2WD, 4WD Auto, 4WD Lock, 3 modes). To each their own but I am sticking with Mitsubishi after owning 3 now I love them and the all new Eclipse Cross SUV will be next on our purchase list!

K McKenzie Thank You! It is funny bc as you mention, styling and reliability go a long way. I always liked the Japanese styling of interior bits and a more aggressive look. Since the Prius batteries in the aftermarket have come down so much I’ve considered buying an older model. Problem is the styling....I have to look at it and at least so far It’s a no go. Glad you’re liking your new rigs. I’ll take a test drive soon. Price and features are very good selling points!

My girlfriend and I have been driving this car since the end of 2017. Wicked good mileage. Where I live, I have gotten up to 40 mpg one way multiple times. Great sound quality and radio antenna. Goes good in about any weather any terrain with the right tire tread. Put it in 4WD low gear and crawl up and down the snowy mountain roads.

OK! Mitsu never intended this car to compete in the compact SUV class. Given this car's price-point, its competition is the subcompact SUV category. I don't understand when reviewers compare a $20,000 base priced car to a $24,000 base priced car and then complain about it. Compare this car to the HR-V, CX-3, 500X, CH-R and you'll see that this car has a lot of merits.

be honest Dave, the Outlander Sport is one of your favorite cars. I look forward to you reviewing the Eclipse Cross!
@Sargonarhes
@Sargonarhes 7 лет назад
From what I've checked, the Outlander Sport has a better ground clearance than nearly all SUV in it's class. 8.5" is better than the likes of the RAV4, VW Tiguan, Ford Escape, etc etc. Making it more of a real SUV than those other station wagons with a lift kit. I mean seriously most cars have a ground clearance of around 5", when you sell an SUV with only around a 1" greater clearance it's not much of an SUV. I've also found the base Outlander Sport engine uses a timing chain, the base Escape has a belt. Which means the difference between an 80,000 mile timing belt change and not. So yes, this SUV does look like a good value at it's price and features.
@bisonuberti
@bisonuberti 7 лет назад
Sargonarhes... The outlander has a bigger or the same ground clearance as the Jeep brand. I've had mine for over a year now and it has been fantastic.
@Sargonarhes
@Sargonarhes 7 лет назад
That's good, that's what an SUV should have. Like my old Suzuki sidekick around an 8" ground clearance. I've driven a RAV4 for the last 12 years, and it's 6 to 7" ground clearance has always been one of the things that's bugged me about it. It's great, as a car. But it feels like a station wagon with a 1" lift kit on it. I'm looking to replace it but can't decide to just go back to cars or go for the Outlander.
@palebeachbum
@palebeachbum 6 лет назад
It also has one of the best AWD systems on the market among compact CUVs. So yeah, it's one of the better off road CUVs. Nothing too aggressive of course. It is car-based, after all.

These are selling for $15k-18k in my area. It's a great vehicle for people who don't care about flashiness and interior gadgets, but want something well-built, dependable and economical. Outlander Sport is an all-around solid vehicle and a great buy. If you want something more flashy and don't mind dropping $5k-10k more, go look at Honda and Toyota.

I just bought an octane blue limited edition Outlander Sport two days ago. I love it! It replaces a 2013 Outlander Sport ES. My 2013 got great gas mileage. I could make the 40 mile trip between Dallas and Fort Worth 3 times before I had to get gas again. On the fourth trip, I would need to gas up before driving back to Dallas. I'm looking forward to seeing how well the 2017 LE model does.

I purchased the SEL model October 2017. MSRP Sticker was 27595. I paid 22K Best car buying experience with the dealership and sales person. For 22K of course there are things in the vehicle that are done on the cheap side. However, overall best in it's price range IMO. I did a trip to Seattle for a weekend over Thanksgiving and I was impressed how the 2.4L motor just plugs away and using the paddle shifters on the hills had no problem staying at posted speeds. And, I just drove in 7" of snow in Boise and it did great in 4x4 auto. Cargo area, just my dog back there in her crate. In 15 years of owning an SUV I've never used the back seat for passengers so that was not a concern of mine. And, the factory roof rack will be great this ski season. Great warranty too!

Hows the road noise? I frequently drive between Portland to Seattle. Is there something you would change? Have you gotten a chance to take it through some muddy fields or sand(Long Beach). Hows the AWD? I drove a Rav4 and hated it. The Crosstrek seems to be a great choice but the cargo area is a joke
@SisiDuSouza

My first car in US was a little Mirage 2015. Why I choose it? A car that was little less than 12k miles when I bought last year, and offering still up to 3 years of warranty to the second owner, what includes Road Assistance (which saved me a couple of times!), extremely good in gas, cute look and under $9k. And believe or not I was able to put so much stuff inside my little bug! I loved it. My only con was that was a car with no much power, but I can't complain. That wasn't a problem to me to drive up the mountains several times and have a lot of fun! Now I just bought a new Outlander Sport and I am still going to pick up at the dealership and I am excited to see how it drives! To me the fact that the car offers such good warranty and that this warranty it is partially extendable to the second owner, it is an beautiful thing! For what you get from this car, is a really good deal! Thank you for the review, just made me happier with my choice!

In the Chicagoland area you can snag one _well_ below the MSRP. We have a 2015 2.0 2WD and it typically gets around 30-31 mpg average in mixed driving. It does its job pretty well and looks nice! Can't complain.

I have a 2014 RVR, I love it! I personally prefer the interior to look of the RVRs (vanilla as you call it. haha). The clean lines and console in the RVR is a plus for me. I find it adds a more relaxed/comfortable feel when you are in the driver seat. Passing on the highway is also pretty awesome. I watch other folks slowly inch their way past other cars and it makes me nervous. When you pass someone you should do it quickly and safely! when I pass other vehicles on the highway my RVR kicks it up a notch and I can pass and get back into a safe position very quickly. My only have two dislike on the new 2017 1. is its grill... I really love the fighter jet look and feel of the 2014 RVR grill. 2. They still haven't put the driver heated seat controls in an innovative out of the way location. A: on the 2014 they have it beside the seat - which makes them cumbersome to get to. B: on the 2017 they put them in your console pocket which now takes away from its storage capacity. -logically (to me) the strip in the on the console that has the hazards could easily accommodate 2 switches -one or either side and still maintain a clean look. But that is me being picky. Otherwise the 2017 seems like a good upgrade.

My usual passengers are my brother & my best friend, who are 5'11 & 6'3" respectively and always complain about having little to no room in my cars. I miss my backup camera, and the push to start thing i had on the rogue, and the rogue is more solid in feel than my sport. The pros, my sport is great on gas mileage, and for a four cylinder engine, she will have a tendency to hit 100 if youre not watching her. The final pro is that you dont see too many Mitsubishi family on the roads these days. Hell i didnt even know that they were still in business, until i saw my car online for sale. So my verdict is, i would get another updated outlander or sport. Or if i really want to be among the rare breeds, get that Eclipse cross.

I want the Base ES with a 5 speed manual. They are discounted under 16 grand. SWEET deal. They get like 30 MPG. I would rather get this than a Rav 4.

hi Dave question most of the cars you review are broken in or less than 1000 miles on them, I recently purchased a 17 Honda accord sport manual transmission and gas mileage sucks 16 around town

Excellent point , although with the price point and warranty it's hard to beat as a daily driver. I'm an autobroker , and for the money it's rock solid , especially for those who don't need a luxurious cabin.

Kia soul has more space. Did anyone else notice he couldn't sit straight up unless he sat incorrectly in the back. The steering leaves the driver feeling disconnected. I still like it but not for the price with better options out there.

The Honda HRV is the same size, have a better inside and it cost around the same amount. This Outlander look like how cars used to look 10 years ago on the inside. If it wasn't for the back up camera people don't have too much reason to get this car.

I agree, AdvancedPerson. If Dave's average speed was 52 MPH, that's pretty much the sweet spot for MPGs. Given that, 26.5 is really not that impressive.

i get 23 in my 3.5L 275 hp Acura RDX. putting small engines in crossovers to make MPG look good is a very stupid idea. buying a small engine crossover hoping to save fuel is even worse.

Same here... and I don't have to worry about maintenance for the first 15K miles. It's free of charge. Also, with the 100k power train and body paint/rust warranty we have no worries. And 36k or 36 month bumper to bumper coverage, this includes brakes and all lights. We both passed on the Crosstrek and the Subaru's are a bit over priced and their warranty isn't that great to boot.

The engine is horrible. Picking up speed to lets say merge on to a highway can be scary/sketchy. Not good for camping due to small trunk. Brakes are horrible.

Obviously... you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. The Outlander was voted number one by "Consumers" digest. Bear in mind key word "Consumer" unbiased for maintenance, fuel economy, luggage room, two wheel, all wheel or four wheel drive, warranty service and purchase cost. Do some research.
