Here's The TRUTH About Acne (Based on Actual Science)

Acne is a huge problem for millions of people. And we’re not just talking about teenagers. Adult men and women suffer from acne too. If you thought your skin was going to magically clear up after high school, but then you kept getting breakouts into your 20s and 30s, you know exactly how frustrating adult acne can be.
According to a 2013 article published in The Atlantic, treating acne is a $3 billion industry in the U.S. alone. And yet, it seems like everyone still has acne. Sure, for some people it’s just a minor annoyance, but for others it’s crippling - a total confidence killer.
In fact, several studies have indicated that acne (and acne scars) can negatively impact quality of life for teenagers and adults, both male and female. There’s a ton of information and advice out there about skincare and acne. You hear everything from product recommendations (“Use this gel!”) to lifestyle advice (“Don’t eat dairy!”).
It’s largely based on anecdotal evidence (i.e., “This worked for me, so it will definitely work for everyone else!"), and it’s often not backed by any sort of science. Even the stuff you read that is supposedly backed by science is often misleading. This is because not all scientific studies are created equal. Many studies have small samples sizes, homogenous subject groups or other serious flaws.
Here’s the truth: no one knows what causes acne. We know it has something to do with genetics and hormones, but that’s about it. Everything else is speculation, anecdote, myth or worse - lies.
So today, rather than telling you what I believe, I’m going to lay to rest seven of the most common pseudoscientific beliefs about acne and dive a little deeper into the most common belief - that diet (and eating dairy) affects acne.

I've dealt with severe acne in my early twenties. I dealt with doctors and dermatologists. I've also tried every acne skin care regiment known to man. Everytime, I visited my Dermatologist, he's told me that diet never leads to acne and continued to provide me with antibiotics. I got tired of taking medicine so I decided to do some research. I found that acne is caused by one of the 3 factors: dairy, glutten or sugar. I decided to cut one of the three for a month. When I cut dairy and glutten, my acne didn't subside. It wasn't until I cut sugar for a month that I realized that it was sugar that caused acne for me. I even took this study further and figured out the tipping point of how much sugar I can eat before I get acne. For me, it was 20 grams a day for a week. Anything more than that will 100% spike up my acne the following week. So, I completely disagree with "science" against acne. The pharmaceutical industry just need to profit from everyone and it's a shame.

For those who struggle with acne, do yourself a favour and don't listen to this video. Change your diet, remove sugar, dairy or glutten in your diet. I have 100% clear skin now. No thanks to people who say acne isn't caused by your diet.

I love the honesty in this video. However I still feel obliged to say that knowing about pretty much each one of these "myths" (except for the oily skin part) helped clear my acne. But I gotta admit, it's not that just ONE thing cleared me up. I stopped touching my face, started cleaning both my phone and my sheets regularly, cut completely dairy and sugar, tried to get more sleep. The crazy thing is that even if I have a good/consistent acne skincare routine and I never miss on the "topical" approach, the moment I forget about one of the good habits above for more than one week I immediately have a bad breakout. So for you people with problematic skin like mine out there, if you feel like trying to follow one of these myths (alongside good skincare, always!), just do it. Cutting on dairy (and sugar) is not that big of a deal, cleaning sheets more is nothing but positive and getting enough sleep is not gonna do you any harm. If it doesn't work, that's ok. We're all different.

You forgot that it has been proven that acne can be a symptom of a food intolerance. About 65% of the world population is lactose intolerant and a lot of people don't know they are, so eliminating dairy could definitely work for quite a lot of people. There's also been some research about the estrogen in dairy that suggest it can have an influence on hormonal acne, but there hasn't been a conclusion yet.

While I appreciate what your saying. A study published a year ago (systematic review/meta-analysis) in the journal Nutrients showed that milk intake was associated with a higher odds ratio of acne compared to those with no milk intake. This review considered the many studies on acne, critiqued them thoroughly, acknowledged their methodological flaws, and still came to this conclusion. Milk is a rich source of the hormone IGF-1, when eaten, milk also promotes IGF-1 release. IGF-1 plays a key role in promoting acne, via its promotion of an increase in cell growth. Excess skin cells can cause blockages where the hair follicle resides, a build up of sebum occurs, resulting in acne. P.S. I have a video on this.

I switched back to dairy recently, but I only drink full fat milk and full fat greek yogurt. I try to have some every day, and my skin has been clearer than ever... From what I read, it has to do with the vitamin A you're getting from the natural fat in the dairy, and that helps fight off the casein and whey that triggers acne. I'm not a dermatologist or a food scientist... and after watching your video, who knows if thats the reason my skin likes full fat dairy so much. But everyone's different! Instead of sugary drinks, i switched to water and tea exclusively and the food, especially candy, i reduced to a minimum. I'm a sweet tooth though, so when i eat too much candy it shows in my face, but i still feel confident since i can control it somehow. But as you said it really depends on the person. I am 54 years old and have struggled with facial acne since high school. I saw a couple dermatologists in my youth and tried Erythromycin and then Accutane with marginal results. In addition, a variety of topical treatments and skin care regimens have been tried, again with marginal results. Over the years, I noticed a definite link between diet and acne. It was not until I read "It Starts with Food" by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, and "The Plant Paradox" by Steven Gundry that I discovered there are foods that are known to cause chronic systemic inflammation in the body. I eliminated these foods from my diet and the acne is gone (along with a few other issues). From experience with my family, the impact these foods have on the body can differ from person to person and can manifest as different ailments.

I've done a quick skim through general articles and I realized that some nerve or joint aches/pains have some connections to inflammation or just plain injury. When you fixed your diet, did any other usual aches/pains (if any) go away? How did you know that it was due to chronic systemic inflammation and if you had it? What kind of diet did you have before discovering those books? Lol this suddenly turned into an interview. 😅 Haha sorry if I ask too many questions.. I hope you don't mind, but these kinda stuff make me curious lol. I'm young but I know some seniors within our family/relative circle so I want to alleviate some of their aches/pains... even though they don't believe me because some of them are nurses! They think some diseases are genetic and not a result of certain diets...

The only "ingredient" that is really proven to cause acne would be sugar. Salt consumption has been criticized to our detriment, since our bodies require salt and no proven studies validate that consuming large amounts of salt cause acne (if one drinks enough water). Now that that is out of the way, we can get to sugar; sugar is shown to excite oil production of the skin and increase cell turnover, which in turn leads to clogged pores and acne lesions. Added sugars are the culprit here, and you can say that carbs are the "covert poisons", but our bodies have gotten used to us consuming grains so the negative effects of carbs are meager. Added sugars are a new addition in the modern human diet, since it only gained popularity over the last 500 years, and even in the 1800s was reserved for the rich. Primitive man only got to consume sugars or fructose when he stumbled upon a fruit tree, and then again only certain fruits have very high concentrations of sugars (like dates), therefore primeval mankind didn't have the opportunity to overload their system with added sugars. Basically what you're looking for is hormone-free, low-sugar, low lactose( a sugar found in milk) products, and chances are you can consume goat or sheep cheeses, since they contain a dairy with a different make-up, and with more vitamin a (really consider upping you intake of Vitamin A, just don't overdo it). Vitamin A can be found in animal livers (cod, chicken, etc) and in sweet potatoes. Happy eating!

The answer for vitamin D is the sun, from which you will get miles more than from any diet. As for calcium, you do not nearly as much as the RDA leads you to believe. You can watch Jason Fung's lecture about calcium supplements to learn about that topic

Hey modest man. Just got into your videos today. I'd say I'm quite stylish .. well, I keep myself simple and presentable and my clothes fit well. However, I am moving to Singapore in a few months .. the weather will be drastically different from the UK and so my whole wardrobe will have to change ... As in the UK you can almost keep the same style throughout the year, plus or minus a coat. Singapore the weather will be 35C+ everyday. Trousers and long sleeves are basically a no go. However every video I see always involved fashion for mild weather . Do you have any videos or tips on summer fashion? So mostly advice on how to wear shorts really lol. Cheers.

Hi Brock, great video! I love that you went the hard way and did your research properly. I actually suffered from acne through my teenage years up into my mid 20's. I used prescription topical treatments (Differin, Benzoyl peroxide), did an antibiotic treatment (which helped temporarily). But in the end what did it for me was an isotretinoin (a.k.a. accutane) treatment (a rather strong retinoid with possible side effects). I feel so much better now that my acne has mostly gone away. I recommend everyone who has suffered from acne for a longer period of time to consult a dermatologist. It may be pricey but it is worth it. Sure you can always try to adjust your diet and whatever, but if you want results rather quickly, the dermatologist is where you should go.

It depends upon people to people, age group, diets and personal habits how you often get acnes. Causes: Genetics, food culture and environment. Solution: Exercise and sweat always, cut dairy-oily foods-alcohol if possible until acnes doesn't go, sleep early(10 pm-6 am), try thinking less on pimple (ignore), lower stress & anger, lower eating habits during night time, for some case avoid direct sunlight until pimples go, etc. I am not vegan but vegetarian, it worked for me. Taking medicine and consulting doctors did help me, as i had salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide creams and antibiotics. But it only controlled for some years, the roots of acnes skin were still there. Notice: wash face only with water 2-3 times a day, drinking water 2 litres mostly always does boost immune, try to have weight according to biometric calculation. Modern treatment, laser does help but its costly, please also consult your doctor too. But the basic is controlling and stay with solution i suggest above If it does helped you please comment Thank you

There are lots of myth BUT there are ways to prevent acne: 1. DO NOT touch your face or your acne. 2. DO NOT pop, let it dry out, let it go all their cycle. 3. Clean your face twice a day using face cleanser, NOT srub. 4. USE moisturizer, dry skin does cause acne. 5. DO NOT let your hair get over your forehead especially if you have acne on forehead. Those are the basic. Don't watch any10 mins video just to get these points, read it.

Over 10 years and through various diets I can confirm that, *in my case*, soda gives me acne. Every. Single. Time. I can go a month without any breakout, chug that godly Mountain Dew or Orange Crush and look like an ogre a couple days later. What worked best for me was changing pillowcases every other day, finding the proper face wash product and working out. The thing about hands in your face is that, while it doesn't directly cause acne, it can lead to acne breakouts among other things if you have skin issues

Great Video. I like the modest and thoughtful approach, and great presentation. Aside from a mega breakthrough, I believe scientific research may not be the source of hope for this condition. With all the confounding variables you mentioned, every future study is only going to be scratching the surface. For example, just knowing you are in an acne study, your skincare consciousness is completely altered, thus changing the outcome from the simple change in awareness. My opinion is that the skills of artistry are poorly explained via scientific research as an artist traverses hundreds of variables in short time, while each study takes years to isolate one at a time. (and they are often ineffective in achieving isolation as you mentioned) In other words, I predict the next acne study published will not change anything regarding this condition. I like the part of your video where you doubt your own myth busting, fully aware that you may not have peeled this onion all the way down by studying the existing research and having success yourself. Feeling the modest approach. :) This thing is a beast for sure. I call it "Cancer of the Soul" -Neal Schwartz D.O.

Good video! I sadly bought into all the bullshit advice that's so widely available and hoped that I could overcome the acne by myself or at least keep it manageable until it went away by itself. That kept me from going to the doctor for a long time and I didn't take isotretinoin until recently. The dermatologist I went to simply said "this is the only thing that will help you" and prescribed it. I wish I wouldn't have listened to all the bs out there and gone to the doctor straight away instead, as I could have had years of improved quality of life and less scars. But at least now I'm a bit better at deciding which advice I should listen to.

Brock, I commend you being honest that scientifically it is not well understood what causes acne. One thing I would mention about the touching your face myth is that it's not just dirt that we're getting on our face. Our bodies are covered in microbes, particularly our hands, which we could inadvertently innoculate our faces with. For example, when you pop a zit, you're effectively innoculating your skin with bacteria, because you are creating an opening in your skin, allowing microbes on your face and hands to get in. That's why you notice redness in that area several hours later. Overall, great video and thanks for making people aware of the science out there.

I made the experiment on myself I have had acne my entire life, tried dermatologist who prescribed all types of products and nothing helped. Later I tried with birth control and it cleared it considerably, however it was only when I tried a low carb diet, to control my hormones when my skin really cleared 100% no more acne anywhere my body, once I dropped that diet it came back. So acne is not something you can cure with creams, it is your body screaming for help it is internal not external. If your dermatologist doesn't mention anything about the diet don't even waste your time and money there

Certain foods do cause "inflammation" which causes acne for certain people. People get acne for different reasons overall, I've used Accutane and it did not work for me because I figured out, more importantly, it was the "food" I ate that caused my acne. I've been eating food my entire life that I was intolerant to such as bread, yeast, & milk and these are ingredients that are heavily in the western diet. Overall it caused me to have multiple problems such as "leaky gut, over-growth of candida, & poor kidney function." When I stopped eating all these foods, including processed, & healed all of those problems from inside my body; it dramatically reduced my acne but I still have acne prone skin so I still need to cleanse daily. For a lot of people the western diet, in general, is causing people their acne, for example, if you look at 3rd world countries they do not have such acne problems like the Americans or compare to our ancestors that didn't eat the western diet. BUT like I said earlier, people get acne for different reasons and FOOD is one of them! I've done everything the dermatologists prescribed me/gave me and my acne had no hope of clearing up & in the end they said they couldn't do anything more for me. As you should know, you don't need scientific evidence for everything for proof of correlation. If you believe so much that diet doesn't cause acne, you should be easily able to accept a bet right? The bet is $10,000. It'll be me drinking dairy milk, of course, if I don't get acne then you win but if I do get acne specifically under my jawline then I win. You see, I even know where my acne will appear. If you appear to decline in some way of trying to argue with me, consider this your loss in the "diet & acne" issue.

For six weeks straight I went straight on a green diet. Completely water, spinach, tomato carrot, etc. one apple once in a while, but nothing more. After six weeks all my acne went away and so did my other ailments however my eczema on the face the red part, patches did not. I still was a little red in the face but the acne completely stopped. Something is causing it, and I don’t think your body just produces it on its own I think something has to endorse it and the only thing I could think of is what we breathing, and take in through the nose and mouth or get exposed to on the skin.

I know this is incredibly discouraged when it comes to skin care, but what works best for my face is regular bar soap. Throughout my teens, I struggled heavily with controlling my acne, in which I tried using a bunch of different over-the-counter face washes after reading reviews, doing online research, etc, as I never had the money to afford going to a dermatologist (hell, didn't even have health insurance growing up). However, the second I started using bar soap, I had nearly instantaneous results. I've been using it for almost a decade and very little of that has been spent worrying about what my face looks like, or needing money to afford it, which has been quite dandy.

This was really a grade A video. It was well researched, especially the part where you mentioned about the problem of reproducibility of actual experiments and how hard it is to actually control all the variables in an experiment and biases of media towards producing generally positive and pleasing results to general masses. Also these experiments are sometimes subjective in a way how data are collected from participants. Great video and keep it up.

It would also be useful to note that acne isn't caused by one thing. There's different types of bacteria that are affected by various treatments. In some cases all you need is an antibiotic ointment, in others, that does nothing and may actually be detrimental. Some are alcohol resistant, some are destroyed by alcohol, etc. Your best bet is always going to be a professional.
