Good review of a nice car that doesn't have a customer segment (larger, near luxury sedan from a mass market brand) worth the billions of investment. It will be gone in a few years.
@japanwatchconnection Yep most people do. Here's a link that talks about the transmission (towards the end of the article). www.vwvortex.com/features/driven-2019-volkswagen-arteon-luxury-car-gen-x/
They should have put the VR-6 engine in these cars. That 4 cyl even with the higher H.P. doesn't cut it because it's over taxed for the size and weight of the car. This is typical of what VW is doing in the States. They're offering nice packages with puny and weak engines while in their European versions they offer their strongest and better performing engines. That's why I stop buying VW.
I am so totally mystified about why so many car companies, High end and average car companies use the swiping your foot under the rear bumper technique to unlock the rear hatches and trunks as a standard process. I've always thought that that was a little primitive. The proximity aproach toward the rear of a vehicle technology to automatically unlock the hatches and trunks that Hyundai and Kia vehicles use would be a whole lot more logical and easier to use...am i wrong in my thinking ?..Totally surprised and disappointed 😞 that the Higher end luxury cars companies use the swiping under the bumper technology.
Jez the US version looks ugly. The ones we got racing around the streets of europe look so much better nicer colours and wheels are much better looking and bigger .
@@zeeshanmbutt It's a weird situation with these cars; why does an A5 sportsback even exist? Why isn't it an A4 Sportback instead?🤷♂️ Where MB and BMW respectively offered C class and 3(and later 4) series coupes and sedans Audi only had the A4 sedan in the segment. The A5 filled that void, it was essentially an A4 coupe.
@@devn3813 you’re half right…lol they’re moving towards crossovers and EVs moving forward. Audi is completely abandoning any new combustion engines and VW is focusing heavily on electrifying their lineup. May very well be witnessing the end of ICE VWs as we know it
@@jwilson2793 it’s really sad. People don’t want good practical cars anymore. They want these tiny little overpriced crossovers that don’t do anything well. Everything good is gone and nothing is affordable
But when it's very hot and sunny outside, you start hating the fabric if you don't want too much sun. A good solution is to add more tint to your sunroof glass or change the fabric
You know they can...they did it with the Phaeton...but in the end VW can't fight decades of marketing and moto journalist continuing to say "but who will pay "x" much for a VW."
I was thinking of getting a Tiguan SEL 4-Motion R-Line, but the Arteon has enough utility with the hatchback, for me to change my mind. The driving dynamics will be so much better on the Arteon than the Tiguan. Will be putting in my order for the Arteon soon.
@@solid1378 I actually cross-shopped this with the Stinger V6, but 2 months ago purchased a used, 4 year old top of the range R-Line Arteon with the 7-speed dual clutch DSG gearbox (here in Australia), and 20 inch “turbine” wheels. An absolutely brilliant car in virtually every respect. It looks amazing, with incredible utility and space, and rides and handles beautifully, helped by the AWD “4Motion” setup. The 4 cylinder turbo 2 litre engine has heaps of power, albeit with some turbo lag, as correctly noted in the video. However, once past this lag point, the car really takes off, delivering very high speeds in no time. Launched from rest, it will do 0-100km/hr (62mph) in 5.6 seconds! It is no slouch at all!
Everyone in here is talking bad about reliability of VW. I deal with VW's a lot. This 2.0T is bulletproof. They fixed all the issues that the 2nd gen 2.0 had. These 3rd gen are great motors
Ive had my 2013 CC for 4 months now. I got it used with 65k miles. Ive beat the absolute hell out of it, redlined it to 8k several times, more than what is safe💀 and it hasn't given me any trouble. I absolutely love it
It would be interesting to have all the haters post a pic of what they drive. So many miss the point with what VW is doing with the Arteon. It is not meant for drags strip performance. It's meant to be a grand touring car with more upscale styling than the Passat. Reliability and service costs of VW's are very reasonable in my experience. You are getting everything Europe gets with the exceptions of what is not allowed in this country due to regulations or what VW does not think would be profitable/desired in this market. No VR6 for the Europeans, either. It is very interesting and somewhat puzzling why so many commenters seem to rate cars by how much horsepower they produce and if they'd "smoke" the car next to them at the stoplight.
Why everyone compares it with Audi and not a trash Ford ? VW is semi-premium, don't compare it with BMWs.... its great and its very sold in Europe, but of course Americans have to be haters.
I was excited about this car when I heard it was coming, but honestly, not a single thing about the Arteon or any newer VW makes me want to replace my 07 passat wagon 3.6 4mo. I can retrofit the same headunit, install aftermarket headlights, have the real leather and real wood dash and had a guy pull up next to me in a big ass dodge Ram to tell me "that 3.6 is sick" after a roll on from 60-90 with ease. Vw should've sourced the Audi 3 liter supercharged setup, cause every reviewer, says looks fast moves slow. My car looks like im on my way to pick up my daughter (which i often am) but on the low hauls ass.
Don't know that the Audi 3.0L would fit under hood without a lot of modification; the Audi 3.0 is used in longitudinal configurations, whereas the Arteon (and most of VWs current car line up) uses a transverse configuration. I'd rather VW look into a smaller displacement 24V VR6 with some sort of forced induction for their higher spec vehicles.
I think it's in the response coding because tuned versions have a much better response time when you step on the pedal and it's pretty impressive how much the stage 1 tune gives
I love this car ! dont get all this lack of power but then they want great fuel economy but also lots of space to store things .We see this reviews that literally confuse consumers. I would buy something like this for sure .
I drove one. Beautiful styling but needs more power. I have waited so long for this car to be approved by EPA and the fact we get one slow engine, and no manual transmission, or a performance version, leaves me cold
Beautiful car, but Volkswagen car dealer experience in Orem Utah left me a bad taste. Here you have to wait 2 weeks to get your car serviced whereas Ford well same day
This is the best sedan design I have seen in years. The designers are brilliant, the subtle yet striking lines and the way they sculpt the front wheel fenders, and C pillars is genius.
The blank buttons are for all the goodies VW decided we can’t have in the US. Also, what you said is turbo lag I think is the damn auto trans. since the majority of Americans do not like the “jerkiness” of the DSG the car comes equipped with in Europe.
Tanatose Even in Europe, only the base model Arteon has a manual and thats a 1.5 or a 2 liter Diesel with 150hp. Considering that everything under 250hp is considered underpowered in the US, i don't think that will be an option.
Tanatose yeah i know that that's enough but there are a lot of people and especially car journalists in america that tell you that everything that doesn't do 0-60 in under 5 seconds is underpowered like if all people did was take their car straight from the dealer to the dragstrip.
VWs is a peculiar manufactures in that it occupies a niche segment of near luxury. Maybe that sells well in the European market, but few North Americans know what to make of it. It should compete against the Toyota Camera or Honda Accord, but even though its fit and finish is easily superior, it generally lacks their utilitarian nature and gets beaten by their fuel economy. On the other hand, it might be a better bargain than even the lowers priced entrants from Mercedes, BMW or Acura, at equal cost, but lacks their better recognized luxury nameplates and subsequent prestige value. The other obvious issue --- and this is a big one -- is that they're severely under-powered. VW offers a world-class turbo 4 (which explains whey they put it in everything they make) but they definitely needs to break the 300 hp barrier with a decent 6 cylinder motor. I realize fuel economy is an issue, so perhaps develop hybrid? Otherwise, there's no way Americans would ever pay over 40 grand for any 4 cylinder VW, especially when comparable 6s are available in the same or near the same segment.
Typical nagging and hate review, Volkswagen offers High quality, robust, safe, and great handling vehicles, they are not as flashy as their Asian counterparts which makes them age well, compare a VW from 2009 to Honda or Toyota from 2009, the Asians look like shit now while VW maintains its looks. Volkswagen is semi-premium /upscale a great car for people who value quality, performance, comfort without going all out on their bank account.
In my area (San Francisco bay area) people go for the VW CCs, the Jettas and Passats. They just buy Audis! No one wants to pay the high price tag for this car. I own two Passats myself.
VW does do exhaust sound, for some weird reason even in their flagship sports car the Golf R. I just wish the motor would make some real sound stock. And not that shit soundaktor if your driving GTi or Golf R it should be a little obnoxious. If you want silent bank vault of a car then drive regular golf.
I hate that stupid shade (fabric) to cover the sunroof. It's useless when it's super sunny and hot outside. I don't know why in the world most cars are using that now instead of the old piece of plastic.
There are certainly faster cars and nicer cars for less money but a c class isn't the right comparison. This thing size wise is probably between an s class and an e class so price comparison should at least be with the larger sedans.
but the trunk space in it is small as hell. Also Kia sales people are some of the most horrible sales people i have met. Went to 3 dealers and all of them didnt know shit about the car and tried to upsale me a gt2 when i just wanted the normal gt.
chocolatewheelchair I can provide many but predicted reliability is one reason. Even with fuel oil dilution concerns which are minimal on the Accord 2.0, it’ll probably last longer
Ummm, nope. Shoddy reliability reputation, downright scary dealership service tactics, and a subpar resale value. I'd go with a Mazda 6 Signature Turbo, or a loaded Camry V6. Smack that Arteon's booty, Nathan!! 😉😆😮😎
@japanwatchconnection A few years ago I saw a real estate agent drive a BMW...he was a friend of my coworker. His BMW was brand new...brand new and it smoked like it had 500 000 kms on it. Yup...that is quality. Had to do a survey for a retired pharmacist. He had a bimmer in his garage...asked him how he liked it...told me he was in the states on a trip and one bank of cylinders just died. He told me next car is a Lexus.
@@cemsengul16 I wouldn't mind if VW would look into turbocharging a smaller displacement VR6 24V in use for higher spec cars in the line...(Audi, and Porsche could use them too if it helps with development costs).
Never watched Nathan do a car review, the boy just don’t look right in a car, he’s a truck man! But good review, I’m always amazed at how highly the Europeans value VW’s and what pieces of crap these cars are in the US, but people I know with Mercs and BMW’s seem to have a lots of problems too, is exquisite German Engineering a myth?
I know its probally been said, but dude we love your reviews, but health should really be looked at and dealt with, waaaaay to much heavy breathing for doing nothing but standing, keep up the great work, but please for YOU/YOUR FAMILY,TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH,AND US,WE'LL ALL MISS YOU BRO
@@supravsg35 That's one of the reasons that option isn't considered; it would step on Audi's toes. Audi is always that subtle barrier to what VWs are capped at.
He thinks the powerful stereo in a car having road noise "will take care of that thing". Well no, you can't simply blast away noise competing with outside noise. Noise forces you to make a uncomfortably loud stereo thus reducing music listening enjoyment.
The exterior design, aside from the very boring grille/lower fascia, is beautiful. The interior is pretty freaking boring, like most VWs. I'd take a KIA Stinger over the Arteon, one with the twin-turbo V6 of course!
Power delivery is easily rectified by a quick flash tune.... plenty more horsepower and torque available which should help with the hesitation style turbo lag you mentioned Stage 1 gets you 85hp and 125tq
Laggy power delivery and poor exhaust note? If only VW marketed an innovative narrow angle inline V6 to fit in transverse front drive cars that was famous for its low end torque and supple auditory stimulation...
In the jeep world, they sell sunshades for the roof. It allows airflow and sunshine, but prevents you from getting sunburned and perhaps, as you suggested, bugs. Similar thought process here?
I guess if you really want fast, get it chipped at APR & maybe some other aftermarket goodies that I imagine will surely make it to market soon. If every there was VW to modify and tweak more power out of, the Arteon is it.
I have a cc and thinking about replacing that with this until I saw the price! It is way over priced imo. Also whoever thinks that this car is boring had never experienced an APR or Unitronic tune to wake up this car!
@ 2:53, you don’t wave your foot left & right in the air under the bumper to open the hatch, your simply kick your foot forward in the air under the bumper.
There is no turbo lag once this vehicle is broken in and premium fuel and traction control on sport the engine is the golf r engine minus the dsg transmission
I'm a VW fan and have owned them for years but this car just seems late to the game not sure what it is. I feel you could grab a turbo Accord for less and has nearly the same power for cheaper. I don't know what VW is trying to accomplish with this car the Passat is the Accord-Camry fighter etc.. what is this supposed to be going after? Kia Stinger maybe?
