Yeah, you nail it!, but the PT Cruiser GT turbo, automatic with autostick gearbox, is still awesome for a 2.4 liters in line 4, I had one 2003 in Blue electric pearl with dark leather seats, 17 inches five spoke chromed wheels , once when a ran out from service garaje a BMW M5 V10 challenged to me and I won, my Pitufina was only 225 Hp vs more than 500 Hp. I precise, I live in Mexico City up 1.5 miles over sea level, was so practical vehicle. That car always would run!

It turned out to be a smart move because it is so rare. Rather that build specific knobs and buttons, they put in stuff that would be easy to obtain, and cheap.... You can put in any after market cd player easily and use the standard conversion kit as a Durango..... You can get buttons and knobs dirt cheap off ebay or a junk yard...

I was working at a Chrysler dealer when these cars were new. At the time, I was doing the pre-delivery inspections (PDIs) on them. Strangely enough, these Prowlers would get more attention at the gas station (I'd have to fill it full of premium unleaded at the end of a PDI) than Vipers did at the time. The guys in the service department called the Prowler the "Chrysler surplus parts bin car". Honestly, I think they did a pretty decent job considering the reuse of all those parts. You forgot to mention how they accomplished rear wheel drive - basically they took the Intrepid/300M transaxle, mounted it in the back, then ran a jack shaft between the engine and transaxle. Cheap and clever. And despite its quirks and downfalls, I still would really love to own one someday.

It never gets mentioned in these reviews that the Prowler may have been a retro "parts bin car" but the car utilized an Aluminum Frame and Aluminum Body panels. It was a lightweight vehicle study wrapped up in a Retro package. Some of the engineers who worked on the Prowler went on to ultimately develop the F150 Aluminum Truck.

This car has a ton of Cool factor! I bought a 2000 silver prowler back in 2002 and the amount of attention the car would get was INSANE, if you are not a celebrity you will feel like one because of the nonstop attention this car gets, a friend of mine bought a 2001 Lamborghini Gallardo around the time I got my prowler and we would go cruising together and my Prowler would get all of the attention, at that time I paid 29k for my prowler and I believe he paid around 150k+ ,yes his car was faster, but I got more attention from everyone including the ladies...most of the pretty girls assumed my prowler was a 100+ Grand exotic..not to mention my buddy had to pay 100s of dollars for an Oil Change and I simply paid 29 bucks! the Prowler was quick enough to keep me satisfied and the best of all is 3 years later when I sold it, I got 29K for it because they hold their value..when my Buddy sold his lambo, he lost around 75Grand, so for me the Cool Factor was driving a car that got the attention of 100k exotics, and all the ladies that came with it (Yup I used their Gold Digging tactics against them) and when it came time to sell the car, not losing any cash..in my book, thats Cool!

If you're buying a car just to "get attention" and "get ladies" then you're not really a car guy at all. You're kind of just a d-bag. I'd take your buddy's Lambo any day over your Prowler for the pure exhilaration of it's driving experience, which is what true gearheads care about. The Prowler is just a classic example of "all show and no go." In other words, it's a poser's dream car. Not really something to brag about.....

How is the hood prop being attached to the hood weird? My 1973 Ford Cortina does the same thing, and I'm sure hundreds of other models of cars did too. I think Doug compares everything he drives with a Toyota Camry. If it's not the same as a boring Camry, it's weird.

We have a Hyundai Getz and it, like many modern cars has a hood (bonnet) mounted prop. The fact is, most of the European cars of the 50's thru to the 2000's had hood props. Unless, you owned one of those 20ft+ LandYachts from the 50's to the 70's from the US which had very strong springs mounted on the hinges, which lifted the hood without support. Its not a new thing!

@rogermurph101

JimsEquipmentShed when I started driving, you could see all the way to the end of the hood. Most cars today, you'd be lucky to see half of the hood before it drops out of sight. Meaning you can't see where the front of the car ends. And cars used to have a raised centerline that ran the length of the hood. Line that up with the right side of the lane your in, and that's where your passenger tire was. Cars don't have those today either. Neither is a big deal. In the Prowler you can see where the driver side wheel is. That's all you need.

missed the niftiest thing about it: only chrysler had a longitudinal fwd transmission that was short enough to pull this off. HOW did you miss that this was a car using a fwd engine and transmission that had somehow been made rwd? Chrysler just had to come up with a torque tube assembly! A porsche or audi style transaxle would have been too long out the back, and a maserati or corvette style transaxle would have made the wheelbase impossible. Chrysler's 4 speed auto was EXTREMELY compact lengthwise, which was paradoxically because it was necessary to make the cab-forward packaging of the LH sedans possible. The prowler was a car that ONLY chrysler could have made, both philosophically as well as in terms of parts-bin. A remarkable car. Your driving impressions were spot-on, though. Great job.
