Egyptian "takeover" of the Suez Canal? How does Egypt "take over" something in its own country? It belonged to a foreign corporation.

In 1869 the UK did NOT control Egypt (the British invaded in 1892). The Canal was built by the French, and Egypt had a 46% share in the Suez Canal Company, while the French owned 50%. Only in 1875 did Egypt sell its stakes in the Canal to the UK in a desperate attempt to resorb its debt.
@Marwan-tx5nb
@Marwan-tx5nb 2 года назад
Egypt owned the majority share (46%) at the time of the opening of the Suez Canal. The other 54% were distributed among other shareholders (individuals investors; many where from France). That is why the French were furious when Egypt sold the majority share to the British.

Interesting facts: The Suez Canal company did NOT 'own' the Canal, it was on a 99-year lease that was supposed to end in 1968. When it was dug (by a 99% Egyptian work-force btw), Egypt owned the majority share in the Suez Canal company (46%). Being overwhelmed by British debt years, the King had to sell his shares to the British. The british ended up using the Canal as a pretense for occupation; protecting their property during a civil unrest.

1. Egypt nationalization was long in the line of Middle Eastern nationalization of their oil resources and transportation network. Sauds, Iranians, etc. As with other forms of nationalization in the region, it was completely legal to do so. 2. Nationalization was aggravated because US and Britain pulled out of funding the Aswan Dam due to Egyptian arms deal with soviet aligned Czechoslovakia. Something that itself was prompted because Egypt was looking to arm itself against Israel, meaning it had to court an arms dealer that wasn't Western.

02:10 you said that united states were involved in 'what to do to overthrow nasser' but then by 02:50 you said united states had no clue. Also it wasnt as simple as nasser just randomly aligning with communist super powers, it was mainly because united states n britain didnt want to give him money to finance the dam, they also said no to other requests repeatedly, which then led him to go elsewhere

Biased 1)Egypt took over something that already was on their land. 2)You did not mention why, Nasser decided to nationalize the canal. He decided to nationalize it because he wished to remain Non-alligned and maintain the sovereignty of Egypt and work on his plan for a pan Arab unity. Nasser wanted to modernize his defence and asked the US to sell Egypt arms. The US was worried that Egypt would use it against Israel and instead decided to invest money to build the dam mentioned in the video. As Egypt was Non-alligned and the US refused to sell Egypt modern tanks, artillery and weapons, Nasser turned to the Soviets. Eisenhower didn't like the fact that Nasser was also cozying up to the Soviets and decided to pull funding for the dam. Nasser then proceeded to nationalize the canal.

John 3.16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

1956 was the highest point in American diplomacy. It was a moment in time when the United States stood up to its own allies to do the right thing and liberate Egypt from colonial domination by France and the UK. Eisenhower exercised moral authority.

@@generalpopcorn6427 True, but the US didn't do it for moral reasons like you've suggested. The US wanted to eradicate European Influence from the region and hopped that Nasser's Egypt would be the policeman that will maintain and protect US interests in Arab countries. Stopping the spread of communism and bringing the entire region under the influence of Egypt and therefore The US were the true US motives for supporting Nasser. Instead, Nasser wanted the entire region for himself through his nationalistic pan-arabism, without falling under the influence of either the Soviets or the Americans.

The modern Suez canal was developed by the Ottomans, and the respective Egyptian Sultans in the past. the British did nothing noticeable, except occupying the canal, even your reference to the modern Suez canal, it was made by the Ottomans during the Napoleonic wars. Simply putting it, the British did next to nothing.
