Roof storage is a good idea. But if the roof isn't reinforced for that purpose, putting much weight in it, even just a spare tire, will bend the roof. Strapped a paddleboard to my lancer with a soft rack and it bent like crazy. Popped back up after the weight was off, but obviously not ideal. Something to think about. Thanks for the video.
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews 4 года назад
That's very valid! At most, if we had roof storage, it would be used for bulky clothing like coats, and maybe some fishing poles. Nothing too heavy

Pretty cool! I feel like I would've used the Prius V for more room, but it looks like it gets the job done well!
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews 4 года назад
I agree, however there are 2 caveats to that. One, I'm not sure if they offer a tent add-on for the V. And two, they are a bit more expensive than the regular Prius

Some great little ideas here but I can't believe that habitent isn't waterproof! I would've thought that was the whole point. Certainly what I was considering it for. Hopefully by the time I'm doing this someone will have thought of a way to attach a waterproof awning to the Prius hatch
@HighMileageReviews

With some seam sealer, it could probably handle a decent shower, but probably not a storm

What would you do to improve this camper set-up? Let us know below!

I would make a platform that folds out of the trunk with four legs holding but up. Something you could lay a bed on. Then the inside of the car

Power inverter. They are pretty amazing for cooking a delicious meal. Using an instant pot, induction stove, hot plate, small kettle for water, etc. The instant pot serves as all of these things and is what I prefer to use.

@@JonathanCWard great suggestion! We recently purchased an inverter and hope to use it soon!

High Mileage Reviews awesome. I wired mine in a few weeks ago directly to the battery using an inline fuse on the positive side. I just ordered today a female shoreline style waterproof plug to install directly on the underside of my bumper on the Prius. It will use an extension cord where one end is bare wires that go into the plug underneath car, and the other end will be a male plug to go directly into the inverter. This was I can have power supplies outside the vehicle to use my cooking source or run lights or basically anything at a camp site, etc while the car can remain closed. Of course, to supply power to the plug I simply flip my switch on the inverter which I ran the remote switch for the inverter to the front of my car underneath the gear shifter right beside where the 12v cigarette lighter is. There is that little pop out made for installing switches, etc. feel free to message me on Instagram to chat about my setup. @JonathanCWardPhoto

I question the advantage of moving the spare tire behind the passenger seat. Why not just leave the tire in its designed space and leave the area under your bed for storing things that you use regularly?
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Год назад
Because underneath the bed is an awkwardly shaped space with many obstructions like the bed frame posts and front seat rails. it's not exactly convenient to access things that are stored there. Plus, small items that might fall out of your bag will roll under the front seats never to be seen again. Also, accessing this space requires that you get out of the car and open the door...and nobody wants to do that when you're all settled in. However, by using the spare tire well in the back, we can access regularly used items readily without even getting out of the car, and we can organize our bags as shown. It's a far more usable space that is wasted by the spare tire otherwise.
@geedoubleu641
@geedoubleu641 Год назад
@@HighMileageReviews The use of the original spare tire space looks anything but easily accessible without getting out of the car. Many Prius campers build boxes around the space behind the passenger seat with several having lids that are fairly easy to open from inside. Also, I hardly think an item rolling under the front seat is something "lost forever". If you can't keep your gear contained then no placement of a spare will help you. Anyway, this is all about individual tastes so you be you!
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Год назад
@@geedoubleu641 you have not lived with this setup so you can't speak to the convenience of it. I have and can say it is very convenient to have items stored there. Access is very easy without leaving the vehicle. If you disagree, then go ahead and build your Prius to the design of other configurations that you like more. This is one of many ways to organize the Prius for camping.

@@HighMileageReviews I haven't tried your set up but I did live in my Prius in a Florida swamp for 3 1/2 months, in the summer. I bought my first Prius in 2011 and I'm on my third one now. I have a pretty good feel for what works in a Prius camper. Still, if you like your set up then rock on!

@norakirsten2819

It's not lifted. I have a theory that without the back seats and with the tire moved to the middle, the back end raises up a bit.
