PRICING UPDATE: It's been brought to my attention that some of my pricing for out-of-warranty repairs are outdated values. The values I quoted were from forum posts that are likely older, and as more shops begin offering repair services for EVs, pricing will fluctuate and fall over time. So here are some general prices one might pay (in 2021) to replace the following: Door handle: $150-$540 (with a third party shop being on the lower end, and Tesla direct replacement on the higher end) Battery pack: $15,000-$20,000 (where a single module replacement may cost $5,000) Drive unit: $7,000-$9,000 (or have it rebuilt for ~$4,000) MCU: $1,500 (add $500 for older models to retain AM/FM radio) Let me know if you agree with these prices! I can update or add to this list as needed with more feedback. It can serve as a good source for future buyers. Thanks!

Decent for an American car. American cars I keep for 200k and they still run fine. Now a well maintained Toyota or Honda.. double that. But I remember a time where 100k was the end for most cars. And electric cars are still new technology. So given that 250k is impressive.

@Tron-Jockey

@@micker9830 - Math challenged much? The average ICE vehicle gets 27 mpg and will need 9,300 gallons of gas to reach the same lifetime in miles. At $3.50/gallon that's nearly $32,500 for fuel alone not to mention oil changes, more frequent brake jobs and other routine maintenance. All together the average ICE will easily cost you over $40,000 to get to 250,000 miles. Throw in an engine rebuild and your well over $45,000. The EV would need about 62,500 kWh of juice which costs about $8750 in my state, $0.14/kWh (although many Tesla owners have free charging for life). A Model 3 battery warranty for the 75kWh version is 8 years and 120,000 miles. Replacement cost is about $13,000.

Nice video and I haven't read every comment but just wanted to add I did the MCU upgrade on my 2015 Model S for $1600 and they replaced not only the tablet but the dashboard screen as well along with all the other components. One month ago someone tried to use a flat piece of metal to break into my car and broke both door handle mechanisms on the driver's side. I just always like to add that for most people, you'll be charging at home so forget about sitting at a super charger. If you can't charge at home really think about your use case. Unless you live in a city where you can either charge at work or due to being in the city only need to travel a few miles but are sitting in traffic then an EV might make sense. I live outside of the city and commute 55+ miles one way to work nearly everyday. I have 35k miles on my 2022 Model Y and havne't need to replace the tires yet (will need to soon but if I rotated more often I think I could get to 50k)

Door handles haven't cost $1,000 to replace in years. They are now (Dec 2021)$540 ask me how I know...... Also new MCUs are $1,500. A new DU is not $15,000, it is as of 2021 $7,000. I had my DU replaced under warranty and I asked what the cost would have been otherwise. It seems strange that you have all this history yet don't have actually service records to quote exact prices. Additionally, any service record listing items being replaced, would also list "Customer Concern". In other words what they experienced that lead to the said part being replaced. Yet you said there were no reasons given for both the battery or DU replacement. If you are going to pass of your review as factual and want people to respect it, double check your dollar figures and facts.
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews 2 года назад
Thanks for the pricing update! Most of the pricing I quoted was from forum research that I now see was outdated. It was difficult to find exact pricing since most vehicles are still serviced under warranty. And for clarification, I agree, MCU price is $1500, however, and correct me if I'm wrong, I had read that it's an additional $500 to keep AM/FM radio on older models like this one if it's upgraded to MCU2, thus the $2000 I mentioned. The service history for this vehicle was not received when purchased, it was discovered through a VIN search, which only allowed the current owner to see the last three years of service, with no detailed receipts or paperwork unfortunately. Since the current owner is an EV mechanic, those were his best guesses as to why those items needed replacing. It's good to know that prices are falling for these types of repairs though. A good sign for anyone looking to buy used

So since it's a model S, it would have come with the free supercharger access for life right? Assuming it spent it's life in California, and assuming an average fuel cost of $4/gallon and comparing to a reasonably fuel efficient 25mpg they have saved approx. $68,000 in fuel costs(17k gallons for anyone that wants to convert to their local fuel costs). That's not including things like oil changes, transmission flushes, diff changes that a vehicle with that kind of mileage would likely see. That certainly would take a bit of the sting out of some of the repairs. The door handles and screen issues are definitely a bit dumb though.

I have a dilemma. In my country there is a p85d from 2013 with free Supercharger, premium package, winter , autopilot 1 , new battery,motor and suspension for roughly 24000 euros and 270000 km.And there is a model 3 long range with 220000 km , 2019 ,no warranty , autopilot enhanced for 27000. I have acess to Supercharger everyweek ( only once a week) . I make 45000 km/year , maximum per day roughly 300 km (once per month). What would you choose ? The more efficient and hitec model 3 or the FSUC model S?

Does anyone know if free supercharging stays with the vehicle for life even after owner changes?
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews 2 года назад
It depends. In this case, yes, it did transfer, since it's an earlier car which offered free supercharging "for the life of the vehicle". But it isn't always a guarantee even for earlier models like this. Apparently under certain circumstances, this perk can be stripped after sale to a new owner. It's best to just ask the dealership or owner you're buying from to see if you'll be transferred the perk
@Adrian-op5ni
@Adrian-op5ni Год назад
You can verify with Tesla by having them run the VIN. It generally stays with the vehicle even after sale, unless Tesla gets it. They remove it. I have free supercharging on my Tesla, and while it’s a nice perk, it’s not recommended for daily use. Even every other day use. Once a week at most. It’s a nice to have for road trips, but not something you rely on to drive around. I supercharge mine once a month or even less. Mostly charge at home in my garage.

@@HighMileageReviews I think they've switched over to only the new design, but I don't know for sure. They would have used up old stock by now, and it's in their own best interest to go with the new design. My door handle was extending just not unlatching so maybe that is a different repair. Great review. Very expensive to repair outside of any warranties. Impossible for most people who need a vehicle. literally everything was replaced. EV equals massive ungodly amounts of carbon let off to build and now we know massive amounts to maintain. Not to mention the toxic battery to attempt to recycle. Expensive and ultra dirty for the environment. I will pass and stick with a Toyota corolla or a lexus or litteraly any other quality modern combustion vehicle that will get easily 500k with much less in maintenance cost and extremely friendly on the environment.

All the more reason why going touch-screen is a very terrible decision. Even with an engine/transmission rebuild, that's going to be $6000 overall (conservative estimate in today's market). But hey 10:52 "at least you don't have to change the oil".
@HighMileageReviews

What surprised me most was the condition of non-mileage-related items like the touch screen and its delamination/malfunction, and the condensation in the tail lights. In this case, things only started to get hairy after 250k miles, which is exceptional, and the warranty allowed for free repairs on nearly everything, which is even more exceptional. Overall, for your average driver, these Teslas will be very reliable vehicles for most of their lives

Wow this car would surpass the cost of fixing my 20 year old cars and the fact that the drive units needs replacing is hilarious. Less moving parts and yet they break while my cars has no signs of needing any repairs on the engine or gear box. These cars are greenwash as it would only encourage people to buy new cars as soon as the warranty goes
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews Год назад
While I agree with your sentiment, it's not completely out-of-character to see high repair costs on a highly depreciated modern luxury car. It'd be unwise to buy most cars that MSRP around $100k and now only cost $20k and expect the maintenance costs of a 20k car.
@matthewvanderbeek1240
@matthewvanderbeek1240 2 года назад
Not necessarily the best test because most people don't put that many miles on a car in a short time. Time is a big killer of stuff. Many gas veicles would last a long time if they are mostly highway miles. When it comes to batteries. Time is a killer if them. Someone who doesn't drive much would likely have to replace the batteries after 12 years with average driving. And average winter. U could buy a new gas car for 25,000. And this car is a hundred thousand. Electric cars are a joke. To expensive to buy to expensive to replace the batteries. Many people today can buy a used vehicle that will last many miles and they don't have to worry about replacing a 20,000 dollar battery if the vehicle if 15 years old. If someone drove it 50,000 miles in 15 years one would likely have to replace the batteries. Gas veicles. Work as normal. Little maintenance.
@HighMileageReviews
@HighMileageReviews 2 года назад
You're right. Time is a big killer of many things, and it's not necessarily mileage dependant. Which is why it's interesting that things like the condensation in the tail lights, or broken infotainment screens are occurring so early on. I would not consider those items to be mileage dependant, and should not be broken in only 6 years, especially on a 6 figure car.
