Thierry Hermes was born in 1801 in Krefeld, a German town, to French immigrant parents. He was the youngest of six children, and his parents, who were innkeepers, worked their hardest to meet the family’s financial needs. Sadly, their lives took a turn for the worse when war broke out in Napoleon's empire, and Thierry's hometown was hit hard. The devastating aftermath claimed the lives of his entire family, either in the war or due to sickness that followed. At just 19 years old, Thierry found himself as the sole survivor and made the decision to leave that place of tragedy behind, venturing far away.
