Coke Studio Bangla Season 1 is coming to an honorable final with the song "Hey Samalo". Shout out to my friend on Facebook who instantly informed me about the background of this track and made it possible for me to react better. It was a beautiful and meaningful performance with a lot of references to the history and culture of Bangladesh. How we say on this channel:" I wish you the very best, stay healthy, stay well and Farewell!" (until next season).

This actually is a musical amalgamation of two historic political movement of the last century in Bengal. The first one was called "Tevaga" that was a system of serfdom introduced by the British where two thirds of the produced rice had to be given to the land lords in the northern part of Bengal. A good number peasants in the northern part of Bengal took part in that movement. The second one was the historic language movement of 1952.

5:49 That is actually not the 1950s. That refers to the great Bengal Famine of 1943. The year in the Bengali calendar was 1350. Sir Winston Curchil was directly responsible for that famine.

This is a mashup of two songs. 1st song 'Hey Samalo'is about Tebhaga revolution in 1350 of Bengali Calendar. Milions of people died by famine created by Winston Churchil and his colonialist Britain in Sub-continent. 2nd song, 'Ora Amar Mukher Bhasha Kaira Neete Chaay' is about Mother Language movement in 1952 against Napakistan. This victory led us to the ultimate victory and liberation in 1971 with a price of 3 milion lives.

You should study about the Bangla language movement of 21st February,1952. The international mother language day is also 21st February. Bangali people not only secured the Bangali's right to mother language, also we managed to secure every one's right to their mother language.

This song about farmers protect and language movement . 1st part is about farmers protection against landlord called " tevaga andolon" in 1946 and 2nd part is about language movement in 21/02/1952. (And become international mother language day )

@@cojakrap you are absolutely right.. but I still want to express my disappointment. It's not acceptable, that my country expected this from it's sister country. Pakistan was made exactly because the same happened to our families, so why do we do the same as our oppressors? Have we learned nothing from history?!

@@cojakrap In 1952, the government of Pakistan thought that one of the many languages would be the state language. Among the languages, Pashtun and Bengali were the mother tongues of most people. So they proposed to make Urdu, the language of minority ethnic groups, as the state language. Indian intelligence agency 'RAW' was active in Bangladesh for a long time to divide Pakistan. To counter this, they mobilized the students of Dhaka University. Students took to the streets and many lost their lives in clashes with the police. As a result of which I got my mother tongue day and independence in 1971. The involvement of Indian intelligence agencies behind every incident is an open secret.

It is a song of unity, after the separation of India and Pakistan in 1947, the land called Bangladesh was part of Pakistan, then Bangladesh was called East Pakistan. West Pakistanis have been oppressing Bangladesh in various ways since then, they wanted the people of Bangladesh to enslave them. The farmers did not get the right price for their crops, then the Pakistanis wanted to declare Urdu as the state language excluding the Bengali language, since then the Bengalis protested, in 1952 the Pakistani military fired on Bengali speaking people. Since then the people of Bengal united and opposed Pakistan as a result of which the war for independence started between Bangladesh and Pakistan in 1971, Bangladesh won after 9 months of war, since then Bangladesh is an independent state.

Actually it's a mashup of two songs. Two songs upon two contexts. In first song- it's described the great feminine which happened just after second world war due to the cruelty of British Raj. They actually took away food grains from this part of the colony to keep their family safe. In second song it described about our language movement. When West Pakistanis were dominanting us in every aspect. They even tried to make their Urdu language for both Pakistan. Against it there was movement and lots of people died.

In the first song 'hey samhalo dhan ho' where it days "lost millions of lives in 50's", it refers to the bengal famine of bengali year 1350 (english year 1943) Being under colonial rule and in the middle of 2nd world war, the famine is critically acclaimed to be caused due to mostly the oppressing rule of the british empire. This is referred in the song as 'not the liberator of darkness'. This is not an exact translation actually. The better translation would be 'don't see u doing anything good anywhere'.

This song was written around the same time as the Bengal famine, which was about the same time as world war 2, during which all resources from India (which was a British colony back then), were diverted to Britain as stockpiles for the war, and Winston Churchill was quoted mentioning the lives of British soldiers fighting the war were far more valuable than the starving population of Bengal. Just some context. Yes I’m from there, no, I don’t hold a grudge because that was a long time ago and empathy for people far away from you is generally not a very visible trend in human history.

You are wrong, in lyrics ‘fifties’ is not Christian era 1950, actually it’s Bengali calendar year 1350 . A big famine occurred in this year. Farmers are not the owner of land, they are only workers . Landlords takes fifty percent crops and the farmers wants two thirds of crops produced . And after the famine they are made a movement called ‘tevaga’ . Bengali renowned composer Salil Chowdhury is the writer and music composer of first song . And second song based on the language movement in 1952 .
