HIDDEN 6k Video Mode on the Panasonic G9! How did I not know about this? 

What are some of your favourite features of the G9 that others might not know about?

I've been shouting this from the rooftop every since I got the thing. When i found the H265 file on my memory card, it hit my like a tonne of bricks and I could not for the life of me work out whey everyone didn't buy this camera. It's not "6K" video. They should not have labelled it "6K Photo Mode". Thats misleading. It's 5K video - slightly wider or narrower depending if you select 3:2 or 4:3 (4992 x 3744). in 4:3 (same aspect as the sensor), it's essentially "Open Gate" (meaning the whole sensor is recording). It's not quite tho (processor limitations) Not only is it wider than 4K DCI or Ultra HD, it has a LOT more vertical pixels. UHD (16:9) is only about 8 megapixels The G9's 5K 4:3 or 3:2 is about 18 megapixels. More than twice the pixel count. Drawback is that it only shoots 10mins instead of 29mins. It shoots 72 Megabits per second (Mbps) (not megaBYTES). HEVC is about half the file-size/bitrate of the equivilent h264 file. This is rule of thumb, so you're getting the quality of roughly a 150mbit h264 stream but you're trying to cram a hell of a lot more pixels into it. The quality is surprisingly not bad pixel-for pixel despite this limitation. It would be nice to shoot HEVC open gate at 400mbps or even 150Mbps. Even for HEVC, 72Mbps is extremely low for an 18MP videostream. You can't change the frame-rate. The GH5 has open gate mode (exactly the same resolutions) but you can change the frame-rate by changing the system clock. Doesn't seem to be a way to change the system clock on the G9. I'm in Australia (PAL) where system clock should be 25Hz or 50Hz but my G9 is fixed at 29.97FPS so I get issues with pulsing when using fluorescent lights. Not sure if the GH5 allows 400Mbps for open gate. That would be worth the upgrade. GH5 had to wait for v2 firmware to do this so another reason you haven't heard about this. I think only the Arri Alexa and Red allows open gate at this pixel count. Would have to check. Note, you have to use the shutter release button to record video - not the video record button. Remember you are hacking a photo mode. It helps to set the thing to S/S (start/stop) trigger. Note that the other 10bit video modes shoot 4:2:2 which means Davinci Resolve FREE version won't load it directly (you have to transcode it into something else) or buy the Studio version. But 5K mode and HLG mode is 4:2:0 which works fine in Davinci Resolve FREE. I've been shooting all my video in 5K for a while now and had no issues with it - other than my PC choking on it a bit. I use handbreak to make 10bit h265 (HEVC) proxy files (1440x1080) which I use on the timeline and then switch the proxies to the originals if rending out at UHD (and not instagram). I find the 4:3 aspect ratio is great for instagram and social media. Cropping it to wide screen is NOT a must. Here's the thing though, IT'S 10bit 18 MAGAPIXEL!!!!! That means I can grab any frame thats in focus and use it as a still anywhere including large prints. **** MIND BLOWN **** Yes, I know that was the original intention, but think about this as a workflow. Shoot all your video in 18megapixel. Worry about stills later. If anything, use a short shutter angle (high shutter speed) to reduce motion blur and you got yourself the ultimate hybrid workflow. I prefer doing my grading in Davinci Resolve than Lightroom. With this workflow, there's no distinction between Lightroom work and colour grading. You will always need something like photoshop or affinity photo (or the Gimp), but I can save out all my would-be "lighroom presets" as power grades or LUTs. I pull stills from the Gallery function in resolve. That way I maintain my 10bit pipeline without bouncing it down to an 8bit JPG. When I get the Studio version of Davinci Resolve, I will use the superscaling feature to upres the 5K footage to 8K for upload to YT. This should work much better than upscaling UHD. There, I've given away all my tricks of the trade in this comment. I'll have to make a video when I get the time. Sony A7iii is overpriced. The G9 is the best kept industry secret. You don't need full frame. You just need the right glass (or speed boosters).

I keep saying this, the G9 is hands down the best camera for the price.

6K is great Trying it out with feelworld f7 and or ninja v But when i hit the shutter button on the 6K mode to record, the screen on the monitors blacks out. Is there a way around this?

I made a similar video on the GH5 by using the anamorphic shooting modes, had no idea the G9 could do it aswell (although in a different way).

Quite by accident I discovered the preset near and far autofocus on Lumix G9. Pressing the button up on the control dial turns on the near focus, the button to the right - the far focus. Before that, I have not seen this anywhere in the documentation or in the reviews. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Conner Do you know when filming with anamorphic lens on the G9 on 16:9, if the results will be recorded squeezed or is it only possible in post?

The G9 is the all-round finest camera I have ever owned in 30 years. Nothing comes close to it once everything is considered. The build, features, ergonomics and last of all is the price. Great camera in 2021.

I don’t do video but I enjoy the feature where it can do color and black/white at the same time. Personally though I just can’t tell the difference between high quality 1080 and 4K when people are shooting it on RU-vid.

This camera has a recording limit of just 30 minutes, which is very bad when I'm filming long-term events, and it also heats up a lot. The camera is excellent for photography, but for working with videos of event and long interviews, it is very bad because of the recording time limit of 30 minutes, and the camera turns off every 10 or 30 minutes.

Would this work with an anamorphic lens on the G9? Can't see why it wouldn't. Presumably using the 4:3 ratio should give excellent de-squeezed results with a Sirui anamorphic.

I couldn't find this information online easily but question- does G9 have a 30 min record limit? Also does the G9 have 1080p 10bit 422 for both 24p and 60p?

No one mentions the 6k feature. Its clear as day on the selector knob. It also offers 6k pictures and video. Some people say well it's only 6k snapshots of the 6k video. What ever. The pictures are breath taking.

Yeah! But when will we get a real video cam (it was available in early firmware versions!!). Or even a G9s 10 Mpix WITH stabilization, for low light !

good setup, but please work on exposure , way to over exposed , to watch but I liked the video.

Neato feature. This is kinda gimmicky, but on my ZS200 I can do an in camera sequence composition with a 4k clip (the GX9 does this too and yeah it is a jpg). I wish I could do this with my G9 in 6K mode. Anybody have a PC edit/option that can do a sequence composition with a 6K clip outside of the camera?

I do not understand, impossible to film they tell me that the focus mode is active and therefore it is impossible...
