With 47 or 52 MPG combined (depending on the trim), the 2020 Sonata Hybrid is one of the most efficient cars available in America today. It's also a mild mannered mid-sized sedan with a big back seat and a huge trunk. Should this be on your shopping list in an era of low gas prices? Let's find out.

Why? You're not going to gather much energy with such an insignificant array, it encourages you to expose the vehicle to UV which is very harmful to the paint, plastics, and rubbers on the vehicle, and its moot anyway as I just spend $1.48 a gallon on gas and prices are likely to fall further as the economy declines and the price war escalates.
@MiguelRPD
@MiguelRPD 4 года назад
@@huskydinosaur2860 Yeah no, those prices aren't going to last forever. I don't see the point of the solar panels but it's nice to see it on more cars to hopefully bring the costs down, adoption rate up so more research can be done with increase efficiency.

I have a 2015 Sonota hybrid and the nice thing about the higher mileage is that you can go much longer distances before you must stop for gas. That gives you more options on long trips. My Sonota gets about 45 mpg and about 600 miles per tank .

I drove a 2016 sonata hybrid Limited 99,000 miles in about 30 months as an Uber driver. I averaged 37 MPG over that time period. Based on your report, it looks like the 2020 sonata hybrid could improve that substantially. Now I’m driving a 2019 Santa Fe Limited and averaging 24 MPG. I would love to see a hybrid power plant in the Santa Fe. Hopefully that’s coming from Hyundai.
@Mamo878
@Mamo878 4 года назад
Yup, it's odd that there aren't more hybrid powertrain options in each model range for pretty much all cars. Toyota is pretty good about that though. Although SUVs will not match the sedan MPG numbers because they are like bricks moving through air.
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 4 года назад
I'd say there's a good chance of it as Hyundai/Kia seems more committed to hybrid and/or EV versions of their vehicles than anyone but Toyota. It helps that it's a lot easier to package these modern batteries in a conventional car than the larger batteries of a few years back.

Bought a new Fusion Hybrid shortly after Ford announced they would cancel most cars and focus on SUVs. Turned out to be the right time to do so - I think I got almost 10k off MSRP. So far, the only issues I can think of are limited trunk space and dated interior... but those are things you are obviously aware of before you buy and they don't bother me. I get about 46 - 47 MPG average in it but I do drive around almost exclusively in eco mode which enables better throttle control (so you can drive around longer and more often in pure EV mode) and more regen braking. But I don't hypermile it - I drive it like a regular car, just in eco mode. Build quality is surprisingly good. No rattles or squeaks, no enormous panel gaps. Reliability, too, has been very good so far but obviously I haven't had it for that long. If you can live with the dated interior and smaller than average trunk space this seems to be a decent daily driver/commuter.

I hope to keep it another 4-5 years but always watch Alex's videos as he's simply the best car reviewer and for my next vehicle I'm considering going with either an Accord Hybrid or the Sonata Hybrid. If I went with either one of those winter tires would be part of the deal for me. The Nokian's that you suggested look very good. Do you normally go with studded winter tires? My personal opinion is just that, a opinion. Being that I do think the time of a plug in vehicle is coming, but not just yet. The real reason is the lake of infrastructure alsong the majority of interststes and highways. From were I live I cannot find the appropriate charging station along the route I'm more likely to travel upon. Untill the infrustructures are in place the plug in hybrids will be relagated to a part time system with fuel being needed to get from point A to point B. For city/urban work a fully electic will suffice. Make mine one of those fabulous Porsche Panamera 4S hybrid model! I LOVE those cars!

We got a good deal $3k off plus 0% financing. Ended up being at least $2k cheaper than the other two cars. I like the interior and infotainment better in the Sonata. The Accord mpg was lower and you have to step up in trim and price to get Apple CarPlay so it was third on my list. The Camry I liked the traditional shifter better but tbh the interior is lacking and cost more. If the 2021 Camry was out it would be a tougher choice. Another great review Alex! I agree the front end is going to take some getting used to but I did like the preview video in white. I am curious about the hip/shoulder room in the rear of the Sonata vs the competition. I had a 2012 Sonata Hybrid that I replaced (due to it being totaled in an accident) with a 2013 Avalon because the Avalon was a little larger and a little nicer, particularly with more rear seat room for a car seat and my two teens. Some interesting experiences from my ownership of these two vehicles I thought I would share. The 2012 Sonata Hybrid had 128K miles on it when it was totaled 2.5 yrs ago. I purchased a used 2013 Avalon Hybrid as the replacement (w/45K mi) and now have 118K mi on that car. The Avalon is bigger, roomier particularly in the back seat hip/shoulder area and it’s averaging 38.9 mpg lifetime vs 37.8 for the Sonata. What has surprised me though is that the Avalon’s interior has not held up nearly as well as the Sonata. The center and side arm rests are wearing out on the Avalon, the seats also show more wear and the fake chrome trim in the Avalon has started to peel, even cut my hand once. Few if any of these issues in the Sonata with 10K more miles on it so far. I can also say that while the Toyota hybrid system is a little more efficient and more powerful off the line etc, the Sonata has WAY more confidence and power passing at freeway speeds. The Sonata would drop a gear or two, engage the electric motor and engine and take off, the Avalon just spins the CVT to a higher RPM and slowly accelerates. Overall, I’d say while I love the Avalon and the more premium feel and space, I prefer the comfort, power and driving experience of the Sonata in many ways. If the new Sonata is as large in the rear seat hip/shoulder room as my Avalon, I can see making a change.

The Sonata was a mid-sized car and competes directly against the Camry, the Avalon is the next size up, a full size car. The 2012 was still the first generation hybrid by Hyundai (the 2011 Sonata Hybrid was their first hybrid ever), so the Sonata was less efficient than the Toyotas (which were on about their 3rd generation hybrids). The Azera would be the Hyundai equivalent to the Avalon, but Hyundai did not make a Hybrid Azera and the car was discontinued in 2018.

Alex many thanks for your detailed and consistent reviews. I am a big fan! I like this front over the regular Sonata. Some notes on tech. Camry is lacking in infotainment and driver assistance. The 2020 Camry has TSS-P v1.0 which does not have lane centering or traffic signal recognition. Accord has very good lane centering and traffic signal recognition since 2018. But the Accord does not have 360 camera, and the content available on HUD is limited compared to Sonata. For example Sonata shows blind spot and cross traffic alerts on the HUD. Sonata has lane centering, but it is so unreliable that you will never use it. Also Camry and Accord are supported by Open Pilot, which is a $1,200 aftermarket add-on that adds Tesla Auto Pilot capability to many recent models, whereas Sonata is not. I think tech is very nuanced. Manufacturers check off a list of features, but the quality of those features can vary greatly. For example Tesla cars have rain sensing wipers, but they use camera and software to detect rain (no sensor), and so far their system is catching up to regular sensor based rain sensing. I think this is an opportunity for reviewers.

I would still take the Camry all the time and it looks very sporty too .

Nice job Alex! It should be noted that this is a 6 speed DCT and not a regular auto. Helps with the efficiency.

No, this is actually an automatic, not a DCT. The DCT is used in the Niro and Ioniq. The Sonata and Optima use an automatic with a wet clutch and no torque converter.

So much better looking than the regular gas version. The new hybrid system is a concern, but in a year or so this will be a *very* compelling competitor in the segment. I've found in the real world Toyota hybrids also do better on the freeway than the city. I think the EPA city driving cycle isn't realistic, maybe they let the engine warm up too much or assume too much speed change on the freeway or something. On long freeway trips it's easy to get well over 60 mpg and on most city trips I can't even get 50 because on shorter trips the engine is cold.

Better than diesel spec equivalent in Europe and Asia!! Cause diesel emits dirty stuff and needs extra additives to keep it clean. Wish we get more hybrid efficient vehicles everywhere in the world

It's a nice looking car but my only problem with the new Sonata is the wheel design they look too small or isn't attractive the only Sonata version that has good looking wheels is the upcoming N-Line

The front end of the Sonata Hybrid looks much better than the regular Sonata. The grill is not as wide and better designed. Looks like a high value proposition.
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 4 года назад
I'm pretty sure it's about the same size, but the grille texture makes it look less gaping. The base SE trim level on the Sonata uses a somewhat similar grille design that looks better than the blacked-out, coarse-textured grille of the SEL and Limited.

11:05 Can't say I've ever spent a lot of time "Feeling" the dashboard as I'm driving down the road. Obviously, soft touch armrests and door uppers, where one might actually place their arms are welcomed. If however, manufacturers can make the various surface materials "look the same", I'm generally O.K. with that. I'd far rather have them spending their money on incorporating features like memory seating, cooled front seats, heated rear seats, and the 4 way lumbar adjustment you mentioned, than worrying about soft vs hard touch surfaces.

I'm still waiting for somebody to start making classic American cars with modern hybrid drivetrains. Imagine a 60s Cadillac that gets like 42 mpg. I'd buy that in a second. Probably would be faster too given how much more power cars make now than even the big engines from that era.
