CORRECTION: I reviewed the UHF version, not the VHF version as I mistakenly said in the video like the stupid human that I am. My apologies for failing you.
Are you ready for the pending apocalypse, or even just a normal run of the mill SHTF event? One of the most important aspects of prepping and being prepared is ensuring communications with your family or group after anything from an earthquake or flood, to full-on zombie-riots. The Retevis RT29 is a 10W, waterproof, drop-proof, UHF/VHF (depending on which version you purchase) radio with a range of up to dozens of miles (depending on conditions and terrain) - The RT29 also has a "voice scrambler" which makes it difficult for anyone monitoring to understand what you are saying. I review the RT29 and show you how easy it is to use.
The Retevis RT29 HT is a FCC Part 97 radio that requires a ham license or appropriate commercial radio license to transmit - except in the event of an emergency, so in this video I go over what the FCC says about when you can use the RT29 from Retevis or any ham-radio without a license.

There’s no specific transmit power to distance ratio. There are a great many variables including terrain, the quality and location of both antennas, the sensitivity of the receiver, extraneous RF in the area, and probably others I haven’t thought of.

A couple summers ago, we lost power for 3 days due to wind. I used an old Radio Shack inverter on the car battery and a long extention into the house to run my laptop, modem, wifi and charge the cell phones. I made a promise to my self, to by a generator before the end of the year (you could't find one for a couple hundred miles around during the outage) and I did. I also bought two 100w solar panels and controller and 3 110AH heavy duty forklift batteries along with a 1000w pure sinewave inverter. One of the batteries is on the DC backup sump pump but can be used to run the blower on the natural gas furnace. Also have a dozen portable batteries. THe best one runs my CPAP in outages and when camping.

I have both the UHF and VHF versions of this radio and they are fantastic. Dead simple and do exactly what you would need an inexperienced operator to do. They are tough radios and have battery life for days. Program them up with some simplex frequencies or your local repeaters and go to town. Have I tested them on MURS and GMRS frequencies with a dummy load in a steel container and do they transmit? Yes. Would I use them on these frequencies to transmit outside the container? Absolutely not. Am I a licensed HAM, also yes.

Thank you for giving a clear and accurate review of the RT-29. I am a quasi sad ham, as well as a licensed GMRS operator, and was confused with the advertisement information from Retevis as I did not see any mention of a Ham license being required to operate the radio when there is no actual emergency. Your review very clearly pointed out when the radio could legally be operated and when it could not be legally operated by a person that did not have a Ham license. In general, I find your reviews to be enlightening, somewhat humerous, and always entertaining. Thanks!
@chrisgullett4332
@chrisgullett4332 9 месяцев назад
You need a license to use it, period. Using radios in emergencies covers all radio services and radios, not just this radio. An emergency means a real emergency, not something minor. Lost in he woods and starving with a broken leg, that is the type of emergency that would allow you to use a ham radio without a license. You can but any radio, you just cannot transmit on any radio, unless it is an emergency. I think the reason it says nothing about a license is because this radio has not been certified by the FCC, which means you're not supposed to use the radio even with a license. I looked on the FCC page, and this radio has not been certified.
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 9 месяцев назад
It would seem that a lot of people don't care about any of that and based on the FCC's complete lack of enforcement over the last 10 years, the FCC doesn't care either.
@chrisgullett4332
@chrisgullett4332 9 месяцев назад
@@TheNotaRubicon Complete lack of enforcement? Is that what you were told, because that is not true. The facts show that a lot of people get fined and even lose their right to own a radio. You should stop believing everything you are told. Some have even went to jail. My personal favorite is the guy who had already been fined years ago for harassing people on the CB. Then years later they catch him again. They gave him a warning, then out of nowhere he starts doing it again, but even worse, so they fined him and took away his radio privileges for a couple years. Then he does it again, but this time he is challenging the government while transmitting, and he ended up getting arrested for it. I have personally seen countless cases where people have been fined, lost radio privileges and even jailed. They are in fact enforcing it, just like they enforce TV and broadcast radio. TV networks and radio stations also get fined all the time for breaking the riles. You think they're not paying attention, but they are always watching and listening. They will literally come and measure your antenna to make sure your antenna is not too big, and will even make you take it down, move it or whatever else to make sure your antenna is in accordance with the rules. Those people claiming the FCC is not enforcing the rules, are either lying or misinformed. Get on your radio and start doing things you are not supposed to do for an entire day, and see how fast they send you a letter or knock on your door. Prove to yourself they are not enforcing the rules. Come on chicken, do it.
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 9 месяцев назад
Thankfully the FCC, by law, is required to make every enforcement public, which they do in their public enforcement database which is easily searchable by anyone with a web-browser and an internet connection. Apparently you dont know this, or have not looked through it, because if you had, you would know there the FCC has enforced basically nothing since 2012. You people claiming the FCC is enforcing all these rules and people are are getting in trouble (since 2012) are either lying or misinformed.
@chrisgullett4332
@chrisgullett4332 9 месяцев назад
@@TheNotaRubicon Oh I just remembered a lot of the January 6th crowd was fined and charged with improper radio use. The FCC even shutdown repeaters in the DC area that day because of the radio usage. The myth the FCC is not enforcing rules is absurd.

I absolutely love these for the money you can't touch them and even better when paired up to thee rt99 in its repeat mode you can easily quadruple your range . This hunting season i will be putting a base station antenna on a push up pole 30 or 40 feet hook to rt99 in my truck to test how many fars we can get.

UPDATE: After using the Retevis RT29 for a couple months in Search and Rescue training, I can honestly say it outperforms my Motorola HT 750 VHF by many fars, lol. I have only one real complaint: the Retevis speaker mic is not that great. That being said, they (Retevis) does sell a optional speaker mic jack that will allow you to use two-pin plug in microphone...I went with a Kenwood speaker mic and it sounds far better then the Retevis by far. I'm using the VHF version and can honestly say for the money this thing works great in the wilderness setting.

Randy, since they seem to listen to you. Maybe you could suggest to Retevis that if they are goin to use the worlds smallest Torx style bit (T8) for the belt clip, it would be nice to include the worlds smallest Torx driver (T8). Or a better Idea....use a Philips screw like everyone else. I'm still waiting on my programming cable. Also on a side note. I know you like your toys and are also around other peoples radios. Check out the Surecom SF-401Plus frequency counter. It'll instantly tell you the frequency and CTCSS or Digital code being transmitted with no connections needed. It might be a quick and easy tool to use when pre-checking radios. This is how I am seeing what frequencies are preloaded on my RT29. Thanks for the channel, Love the content and attitude. To have an amateur radio station, means that you have an amateur radio station license period which in turn means that you have to be a licensed amateur radio operator. When I first receive my amateur radio license they sent me booth and amateur radio station license and a wallet license. Now these must be printed out, however it still applies when you print out the PDF it has both a station license and a wallet license. That way you don't have to carry around a large document roughly 8.5 x 5-6 inches

Yes, you could use the UHF au/NZ narrowband CB frequencies, although ACMA would obviously not be happy about it, probably half the radios out there don't fall within the limitations of the class license. Ensure you have it in 12.5khz (narrowband), and if you wish to use the repeater channels ensure you put it in as duplex and put in the offset. Don't know how clean they are re spurious emissions, so putting it on a scope is probably a good idea to ensure you're not polluting the harmonics too much. As you're going to be limited in channels, perhaps pick ch40 (477.4) for road use, ch5 (added as both simplex and duplex) for emergencies, ch11 for calls, ch12 for caravans and convoys and then other local channels that are of use to you, perhaps a few of the repeater channels and some simplex channels across the 80 channel plan. Obviously don't do this, and this doesn't constitute me advising you to do so, just how you'd hypothetically deploy such a device on the UHF cb freqs.

10 watts is a lot of power for a handheld, and the power drop on the dummy load test could be indicative of overheating. Could you do the test again with a longer key down time? How hot did the rig get during use? What military grade certification did it get? Interesting looking HT, might even be worth it to many. I would like to know moar.
@Texas1FlyBoy
@Texas1FlyBoy 2 года назад
The slight power drop during transmit was more likely that the battery was being drained. The more you transmit, the more it uses the battery. 😉
@N2YTA
@N2YTA 2 года назад
The measuring equipment we use is not calibrated laboratory grade items. If they were they would be extremely expensive. The stuff we use is “for reference only”. The most accurate way of measuring RF power is to transmit into a dummy load of a known value and monitor the waveform on an oscilloscope, calculate the RMS voltage, and then calculate the power using ohm’s law. The voltage measured is likely to be very accurate any error would be in the value of the load. We say the dummy load is 50 ohms; however that isn’t the case at every frequency. If the radio is supposed to produce ten watts and you measure nine the radio is functioning just fine.

Randy - Tell me the Best Bang for the buck in 2021 - a Radio that also includes GMRS Repeater capability and the most functions, features and frequency coverage. What's your recommendation?

I am new to your channel and this new radio hobby...and thank you for great videos! For a SHTF radio...what is better UHF or VHF?
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 2 года назад
Impossible to answer - which is best depends on your specific SHTF wants and needs, location, and conditions.

@@TheNotaRubicon longest range in forest, mountains, i.e. hunting. Did some more looking and I understand UHF is better thru concrete...business etc. Yet your review seemed a mix of city, houses, and had great range UHF.. I'll keep reading and learning this stuff. Thanks again for your channel.

Contacting a friend to confirm his refrigerator is running (so that his provisions don’t spoil and this saves his life) would seem to qualify as one of the potential unlicensed use cases!

I see it’s been a minute…but just received my RT29’s. I find your RU-vid format, awesome, hilarious and informative, for that, THANK YOU! My question before I attempt to program as a newbie, will I be able to program the WATT per channel for ease of use? If not clear, I’m wondering if I can make CH 1, 5 Watt, and CH 2-5, 1 Watt, and CH 6-16, 10 Watts… and so on. I’m not licensed, nor do I plan to be. This is for emergency except for the 1 Watt Channels, which are intended for my brother and I while on our Dual Sport ADV rides. Thanks for your insight…

IIRC, using the software you can set each channel to a different power level, L, M, or H.

Great video 👍. Any suggestions on radios for longer ranges like around 40 to 50 miles ? TIA.

When coupled to a YAGI antenna I was able to communicate with a friend at 32 miles. I was at an elevated position and he was on an island so almost a line of sight if not for the earth curvature. Great radio.

Is the 10 watts adjustable, and what's the battery life compared to the normal 5 watt ht's..

FCC rules permit a licensed amateur (ham) to operate on frequencies outside of his license grant. A Technician could use the Extra frequencies to save life or property if there's no other option. But no one is going to get in trouble if someone without any license uses a radio to save someone's life.

I use them to communicate with my buddy back and fourth when we are at our own houses and dont wanna text or use a phone. Just general chit chatting. Dont care about some sort of dumb rule. As long as folks dont use them for malicious purposes, it's fine in the people's eyes.

…Randy…. Come on…. Get your Tech license already! I’ve had a amateur radio license for decades… and I’m not a sad ham nor a regular “chit chat” ham. I’ve used the radios as a tool. I’m an off-roader , scuba diver, bowhunter, and competitive shooter. It doesn’t make you an instant dork. What it does is open up a whole lot of useable radio waves and infrastructure of repeaters that GMRS will never catch up too. I would talk to my buddies on a repeater until we got into simplex range. It’s very useful. Just do it damn it.

For SHTF. What channels would you recommend programming. Would like to stay in the GMRS range. And why specifically only 16 Channels. Asking for a friend

I just found this channel, and so far pretty neat, but i am curious to find a radio that can listen to every single radio signal there is to pick up and listen to, I do not wish to broadcast or transmit anything, i just wanna listen in on one device, any frequency. Does such a radio exist for under $100? That's what I'd like to know.
