Back in the 70's, as students, my weekly grocery budget for two people was $10. We ate a lot of stuffed peppers and pork steak in mushroom sauce. Now I'm a single senior and try to stay at $100/month. I shop only the loss leaders. So far this month I'm at $64 with a freezer full of chicken breasts and ground beef. Will spend money for fresh vegetables, so should get up to the $100 by the end of the month. I look at it like a game and I want to win ;o)

Yes! I like looking at it like a game too. I try to stay as close to $1/lb or less for all produce, it's gotten impossible for some items, but it's still possible if you watch ads and don't always shop the same stores and the same days, you can run into a surprise deal.

I'd rather buy something of good quality and then a little less than something in bulk of lesser quality but cheaper. And eating less is better for you, too. We consume way too much food in a day.

We have been Aldi shoppers for about 35 years! And wow, the improvements they have made over the years are amazing. It's a plus when we can get some of their meat marked down to 50% off. It also saves us so much time, because the store footprint is smaller and there aren't as many choices to make. Love Aldi!

When it comes to shopping experience, Aldi and Wal-Mart do not even compare. In my area, Aldis are much smaller and one can shop quickly and get in and out. My Wal-Mart Superstore is huge and I wander just shopping for 20 items. My time is worth money too. For me it’s Aldi hands down.

Last year before my surgery, I really didn't have the stamina to walk about a big store to shop. So I rarely went in a Wal-Mart etc. Now that I'm healthier, I still only shop there infrequently when I need to stock up on non food items I can't buy from a smaller store in my rural area.

One of the best differences for me in shopping for groceries at Aldi or Walmart is ease of shopping. Aldi is small and compact. I can shop quickly whether I am buying a little or a lot. I don’t have to go over a lot of square footage to buy my list. Also the smaller parking lot is easy to manipulate. I appreciate having Aldi close by.

We have a shop called Argus Farm Stop that has locally grown food that comes from local farmers. I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are also having a cool summer here which I love. Thank you for another great video!! For the 2 of us, we budget $60-80 (Canadian) a week for groceries and household items. We portion and freeze meat and focus really hard on only buying sales and zero waste!! Your videos are my weekly encouragement to keep going! As for the buying local, for us it helps that we actually have a separate budget for that. On Sunday (our date day) we take drives out to a lot of small towns and have a budget to support small business while we are out there.

One thing to keep in mind about Walmart is that they are ruthless in demanding tax breaks and putting Mom and Pop stores out of business to build their big boxes. After a few years they leave, leaving the blight of the empty big box behind. Here in Columbia, South Carolina, they have abandoned two stores in the past few years, one of them - a Walmart Neighborhood Market - open for less than 2 years, leaving behind two empty big boxes and lots of unemployed people. While they were open they attracted lots of drug traffic and "product shrinkage" from the nearby homeless camps. Another problem with Walmart is that their meat is trucked in already packaged, so it is not as fresh as at other supermarkets. To me, slightly lower prices aren't worth it. I moved to this area 14 years ago from a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York, and we had fought there for many years to keep Walmart out. There are still no Walmarts there, but the Shop-Rite and Tops Friendly Markets are thriving. Here I shop at Food Lion, Aldi, and Costco. Publix is good for their "BOGO" specials. Target, with their Red Card which offers 5% off anything in the store and free shipping if a product is out of stock, is great for kitchen staples and cleaning supplies. Their Target Circle savings can be allowed to accumulate. Last year, I saved mine from June through December, and in January cashed in the $65 in my account to stock up on free staples and frozen vegetables for the new year. Their frozen vegetables are very cheap and good, and their "Good and Gather" natural products are great.

Yes. Walmart is unethical on their practices of having low prices until all the local stores are shut down. Then they raise prices. I won’t shop there. Rather pay higher prices to keep the economy of an area at a good level

Walmart has been here 20 years and I do my best to shop elsewhere. Sadly, not many other places to shop at and quality at Walmart is lesser also. Locals look at me like I have 3 heads when I say "I try to avoid shopping there". I still have a cheap plastic ba no from late 80s but also have old METAL bank shaped like a stage coach from a local bank who gave it in thanks to opening an account at bank. They horrible

Wow -What a great video today! I especially enjoyed the ice cream as I’m at the beach most of the time and the ice cream maker is back in North Carolina. This gives me a wonderful option ice cream here! Here in Ocean Dr., South Carolina we shop at Aldie and Walmart as they are two blocks from the house. We do the same in Concord, North Carolina , but have an 8-9 mile drive there. We have really upped our food budget for several reasons: 1. We give heavily to our church food bank, 2. we dine out at Happy Ours at the beach, 3. We are buying more expensive items for entertaining ( a goal of radical hospitality), 4. And we are enjoying better quality food after childhoods of food deprivation and young adulthood frugality. Thankfully God provides us $400.00 a month for these luxuries.

I have chosen not to enter a Walmart for about two decades now and am here to say it is entirely possible to live without Walmart. We live rural, but Walmart is only about 10 miles from here. It is possible with careful shopping to stay within budget and shop local!

Good for you! I'm the same way with Amazon. If I can't get something locally, I really don't need it. For home repair projects, we always start at our small neighborhood hardware. There have been a lot of consumer complaints in my area about staples and own brands all having magically increased in the last year to exactly the same price in almost all main grocery shops. Many people complained and finally the price watch agency came in, it is one thing not to forget that as a consumer you have rights and one is the right to complaint if things appear "fishy".

I am very behind on videos, because I just found your channel last week! Loving learning from you; you remind me so much of my lovely mom. I shop mostly at Walmart and King Soopers (our local Kroger store here in Denver). We like to splurge a couple times a year at Trader Joes, and we also make an occasional trip to Costco or Sam's Club for bulk household items like diapers, wipes, laundry detergent, toilet paper, etc. Our budget is $200/week for a family of 6 (2 adults and 4 kids aged 10, 8, 5, 2) and we cook 3 meals a day from scratch at home. We homeschool our children so that includes a nice, hearty lunch. We include household products in our budget. Any money I save out of our grocery budget I save toward bulk meat purchases from a local rancher. Love the videos and all the great tips you share!

That box of vegetables is quite the deal. Wish we had something like that around us. Went to the farmer's market because strawberries are in season and grown locally. $52 dollars for a flat (8 quarts)! Because of the drought, they are on the small side. Hello from Denmark. We shop mostly where the promotions are. I usually bike to do my shopping so no gas cost her therefore I buy everything on sale . We ( 3 adults) spend about 75$ a week plus the veggies and fruits from the garden. I used to be able to do it on 60$ a week with to children but the prices are about double around here. No medical cost because we have universal health insurance coverage for everything ( benefits of living in Northern Europe) otherwise it would be a big part of our budget. We will be trying the ice cream next week and I am already looking forward to it 😋! God bless

I make a list after looking at all the grocery store ads for the week, then cherry pick the sale items/loss leaders. I go between Aldi, Price Chopper, Wal-Mart, Wegmans then a small local store named Nichols that has excellent sales. I shop at a store called Dollar Star. They bring in all kinds of random closeout items from Target, Whole Foods, Dollar General and even a local farmer's market. That's usually my first stop because the prices are fantastic. If I still need other grocery items I go to Aldi, Walmart, Ideal Food Basket and Publix. If I could find more "mom & pop" stores in my area I WOULD support them, but where I am, near Fort Lauderdale, it's all SO commercial. Every store I just mentioned is within a mile of my home.

Thanks for the Aldi/Walmart comparisons. In Virginia, when Aldi opens in a new area, it puts downward pressure on food prices at ALL area stores. I imagine if that Walmart had no Aldi nearby, Walmart's prices would likely be higher. I continue to compare Aldi to other area stores, and Aldi is virtually always cheaper for the basics I buy. I'm a simple cook and my family are not picky eaters, so Aldi suits us fine. I'm also not tempted to buy everything including the kitchen sink at Walmart, since it's 25 miles away and I visit there rarely.

I have an ice cream maker and really enjoy making homemade ice cream from time to time. I give it as gifts too and people love it. Today I went to a farm on my way home from my mom and dads and got some meats and veggies. I like supporting them because they grow and raise their own veggies/fruits/animals. The cost is def more than a supermarket but I know at least how the meat was raised and butchered and the veggies/fruits are not jacked w/ pesticides. It’s totally worth it. I do also go to the supermarket for stuff and where I live (New England) Market Basket is a regional chain and they have the best prices anywhere. I love going there to find quality items for less.

The majority of food shopping is done between ShopRite and Aldi. The third store I shop at is a local discount grocery store. I do get a ton of our snack items at CVS once or twice a month and use coupons which saves a ton b/c they carry the brands I love which are organic. I do look through the flyers and if there are other stores that have great deals I will stop in as I have access to every store on one street 20 min from my house. We do our best to stay around or under $100 a week. Hubby and I both work from home. I do my best to cook everything from scratch. So we do breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snacks. I have food allergies and do my very best to buy organic when possible. The $100 a week also includes us stocking up on food when it's at a rock bottom price. Some may say $100 a week for 2 people is a lot, but we also have a dog and we try to make him his own food as well as it's cheaper. We give him nutrients that he may not often get from the food we do make. Everyone has different life style needs and each has to do what works best for them. This is what works well for us.

Hi Emmy and Paul. Ice cream looked amazing 😊. Here in Scotland I shop at Aldi and Tesco. I always compare prices in each store online before I head out so I know which is cheaper that day. The only problem I find with Aldi is that you can buy an item you love for a few weeks and then you can't get it anymore. My budget for the month is £200 for 2 and a dog. I used to be under every month but it's getting much tougher with the price of staples going up. We used to buy Tescp cheese at £1.79 for 400g and now it's £2.85 for 400g 😮. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Great comparison! I shop at Aldi's. I was beginning to think about shopping at Walmart. Now I don't have to do that. Thanks a lot! ❤️ When you said homemade ice cream, I instantly thought of rose petal ice cream. I don't know why... I've never eaten it. But, If you're going to make it yourself, might as well make it something you can't find to buy. I'm not sure but I may have run into it while traveling in Greece, or France... I don't know. I just thought of it. I have rose water that could be used for the water and vanilla. Then, one rose, preferably wild, could be washed (and possibly blanched), cut into tiny pieces and added in. I might try that. It would also be good with orange blossom water and a touch of orange, or zested orange peel. You've set ideas flowing now...OH BOY!!!

I mainly shop at Aldi, then go to a local Piggly Wiggly for the things Aldi doesn't carry. In fact, I've recently been doing Aldi instacart pickup because of physical pain,and it's so convenient. I also bought a foodsaver, based on your recommendation and I love it. ❤️ ❤

Hi Emmy, the home made ice cream looks amazing but when I priced out the ingredients in the past and it is generally twice the price of a container of a decent ice cream on sale at the supermarket. We don’t go out for ice cream because I find it much more satisfying to pay less and enjoy it at home in a cup or cone. My neighbor has two daighters and takes them to the local ice cream stand frequently and drops $20 there but to him is is about making memories and rewarding his excellent students which I totally get.
@marydavis9869
@marydavis9869 Год назад
Look at the ingredients in a container of ice cream. Very few are made without bad ingredients. It may cost more to make at home, but I know the minimal ingredients I put in it. For me, health-wise, I prefer to pay more & make my own.

We don’t have an Aldi’s yet but we will soon! Can’t wait. Mainly we shop at Krogers and/or the Super Center Wal Mart. Both are near each other and about 4 miles from our house. We spend $50 a week on average for two people. We don’t have guests for dinner as often as you do but I take food to my son’s house, about 8 miles away. We have one cat. I use a lot of coupons and compare prices before going. We love the fuel points program at Krogers which often lets us have $1 a gallon off our gas. Carole

Aldi used to be my go to store for staple items. Unfortunately, since the start of the pandemic Aldi's prices have soared. Now when I go to Aldi it's just to see what's on clearance. We've accumulated quite a bit of food over the past 2 years. Lots of home canned things & meats in both freezers. We are seriously working on mainly using what we already have on hand. For the two of us we budget $75-80 a month. This is for a gallon of milk weekly, one can of diet soda daily for each of us, tea bags, staples we run out of and taking advantage of loss leaders. We have quail who provide all the eggs we need as well as meat.

I am very fortunate in that I have three grocery stores - Aldi, Shaws (high prices but best loss leaders), and Hannafords (mid-range prices but has name brands and has a good frequent shopper program) all within a one block area, so I am able to actually price compare looking at the flyers on line, bring a cooler with ice packs and hit a couple of them in the same trip without adding much time. I also shop at Market Basket but that is not near these others. My budget is small because I am a household of one, am a vegetarian, get my pet supplies through Chewy, and don't buy any single use paper or plastic products (except TP). So, my current weekly budget for groceries, gas and personal spending combined is $80, but I have needed to increase that a few times to $100 over the past year. I also put away my left over money each week in an envelope and when I save enough I use it to place a bulk order at Azure Standard, which helps keep the weekly bills down. Being flexible and not store loyal but instead always comparing is my favorite savings tool. I wish I could do the Flash Food app, there are no stores in my state but I do keep checking, hoping for one day. Thanks for doing that comparison. There is also a Walmart in that same one block as the grocery stores but I never go in, just too big for me and I figured that they probably could not seriously beat Aldi.

Depending on sales of meats and vegetables we might only need milk, eggs, coffee, flour, (as I make my own bread), fruit etc. Our grocery’s ranges from as little as $100 to 300 a month. We keep the freezers full and rotate the canning and freezer foods. By doing this most months of the year we keep it around $100.

I shop in the app, purchase my items, designate the time when I will pick them up. They shop for me and bring everything to my car. I actually think this saves me money, since I am not impulse shopping as I walk through the store. It also saves time and energy.

Comparing groceries at Aldi and Walmart: some things like milk, bread, butter, milk, for example are all comparable. But other items like breakfast cereal do not compare, we do not like Aldi breakfast cereal. Also our local Aldi seems to regularly be out of certain fresh produce items, which is frustrating. Sometimes it is fine to run into 2 grocery stores, other times you don’t have that extra time or don’t have the health/energy to do so. Thanks for this informative video!
