Thanks. It is hard to explain that to people. If you have 1800-2000 calories a day to work with its no problem. If you don't, then shakes are an option. Thanks for watching.

Namaste gentlemen, I'm so stoked to have found your channel today. I'm a 16-year vegan, 24 years not eating mammals, and I'm a 54-year-old postmenopausal woman. I run four miles every morning, I'm a yoga teacher, and I eat a mostly Whole Foods Plant Based diet, always vegan. Recently I've decided I'd like to add more protein to my diet as a post-menopausal woman so that I can keep the muscle I have and add some too. I've been adding more plant protein here and there, but I haven't really known how to go about it, that's why I'm Lovin your advice, recipes, and channel! I'm so happy to find someone who understands WFPB fundamentals but has changed it up to make it high protein! Thank you! When the student is ready, the teacher appears...

Strength training is so important... I wish everyone would try it and see how fast the benefits come! I'm an overweight vegan in my 50s who had "tried everything" (I thought.) I just started lifting weights a couple of months ago, and I am shocked by the fantastic results. I'm still avoiding oil, but now also boosting protein to support the new muscle growth.

Hey there, yes resistance training is absolutely crucial to losing weight and keeping it off sustainably. It’s certainly not fast, and don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea. If someone consistently resistance trains at least 3 days per week and doesn’t see results in 6 months, get a personal trainer to figure out where you’re going wrong. Otherwise I always say stay disciplined and consistent for 6 months to a year and you will be a totally different person

This video is just what I needed! I lost my weight McDougalling 6 years ago but I’ve struggled to change my body composition at all and I’m still very skinny-fat. I’ve recently started adding more protein in my diet but don’t want to depend so much on expensive prepared foods and protein powders. So since the start of the year I’ve been seriously slacking. 😂 This video totally motivated me to start tracking macros again today!

The changes are very obvious for both of you. I read Joey’s Facebook post about tweaking his nutrition and protein to meet his goals. Everyone’s goals and current situations are different and they have to learn that they can’t use a cookie cutter approach. Good for you!!

Thank you I enjoyed this video very much. You both are looking so good! I am very interested in seeing the benefits of including more protein in your diet. There is so much conflicting information out there but you are definitely showing the results of adding more protein in your diet to build muscle. I feel that whilst eating lots of starch/carbs is very beneficial to many people, maybe not so much if you are into building muscle and want to stay lean. Please keep us updated on the progress.

I can’t tolerate any protein powders due to my IBS and IBD. I use some almond protein powder in my green smoothie daily and it adds more protein but it’s not a complete protein. Hopefully I get enough other amino acids throughout the day to make up for it. I am sodium-sensitive and commercially made seitan has too much sodium for me so I make my own, a very laborious process. The downfall of McDougall, Fuhrman, Greger to me is that they do not emphasize protein as one gets older although Dr. Fuhrman does talk about it a little and of course sells his own. I am looking forward to this series.

Apparently it helps draw extra water into the muscles and can help you get about an extra rep when lifting so it should help with hypertrophy in that sense. I’m still not convinced it’s worth the price for the minimal results. It seems most popular for those who want a good pump after lifting.

Professional athlete here! If you are working out (and I mean legitimately working out-moderate+ work outs 5-6x a week), you need to be eating about one g protein per lb of body weight OR one g protein per lb of ideal body weight. For most people, 60-90g a protein is perfectly sufficient. Remember that the quality of your protein is important, not just the amount. You need to be eating a varied diet, not just using supplemental protein.
@PlantBasedDads
@PlantBasedDads 6 месяцев назад
My protein is coming from a lot of sources which I showed in the video. My trainer, who is well known in the local body building area, has come up with the numbers I use in this video. I have seen the same numbers on almost every body building channel on RU-vid so I am confident that I am working with the correct targets. So that is where the info comes from. I love eating Starch Solution, but I just cant get my body to change back to more muscle and less body fat without having more protein. Thats what the science supports.

@PlantBasedDads
@PlantBasedDads 6 месяцев назад
It is really simple. I have talked about my metabolism for the last few months. It is at about 1500 calories per day. That means, If I eat anything over 1500 calories in a day, I will gain weight without some type of exercise. It is all about math. So, I am limiting my calories to 1400 per day per the personal trainer and the electronic 3D data scan we did on my body, which will give me a slight calorie deficit. At the same time, I am using protein to make sure that my muscles aren't being used to burn energy. I want my body to burn the stored fat. Having enough protein, in this case 0.8 - 1.0 pounds of protein per pound of body weight each day allows me to burn stored fat during a calorie deficit and not my existing muscle. There is no whole food, plant based combination that will give me 140g of protein while staying under 1400 calories. So, while keeping that in mind, I need higher protein foods. To give you an example, if I take a whole food plant based food like pinto beans, I would need 12 cups of them to get me 140g of protein, and the calories for that many beans would be 2339. I would be eating almost 1000 calories over what my body is burning, causing me to gain a lot of excessive weight, which is how I got into this overweight situation in the first place. So, it is all about math. I don't know why so many people are confused about this. If you eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight. If you don't eat enough protein during a calorie deficit, you will burn muscle, not stored fat. I probably need to talk about this in next weeks video. Telling people they can eat whole food plant based and not have to worry about their weight is just lying to them. Calories are either burned or stored. Numbers don't lie.

I’m sorry Joey, but I’m going to have to take a break from your videos until you’re back to eating whole food again. Due to my health issues, which is the reason I’m following Starch Solution, I’m not interested in adding seitan, protein powder and other highly processed foods to my diet. In my honest opinion you can do the same thing by using whole foods instead of processed foods to add enough protein to support your workouts. Please watch your kidney function if you continue to add the higher levels of protein to your diet.

What’s not plant based though, the wraps and seitan? 🙄 P.S. most things are processed even rice, nuts and beans and such. People try their best. Hi Julie. For now, I am trying to get more protein in to change my body composition to more muscle. Meat eaters can easily do that by eating egg whites, which have almost no calories. Plant based eaters cant get enough protein with whole foods while on 1300 calories. So, I am using some processed items in my meals that have higher protein in them. Its a season that I am going through to change my metabolism. At some point, I will be doing just whole foods again when I have more calories to spend every day once my metabolism is up. There is just no way to get 140g of protein on whole foods while staying under 1399 calories. I have tried. it. But, if you do come up with some ideas, i am all ears for sure. All my food is of course still vegan and I am still incorporating plenty of fruits and veggies.
