HIGHEST JUMP IN TRACK HISTORY 

Yes, this. No shade to Sotomayor, but his flexibility shown on these clips seemed very average. I've seen the pics of a friend's elite college athlete son with his heels an inch from his head. Furthermore, the clip of the record shows the bar squashed a good 3 cm with his rear end. It counts of course, but it was a very friendly bar. Repeat - no shade to Sotomayor. I'm sure his technique was way better than the quality of these video clips.

Yes. Indoors there were some clearences over 2.40 that weren't included in that list

... but that's the problem with these failed attempts, we DON'T get the benefit of Sotomayor's (or anyone else's) failed clearances in which he also ALMOST cleared the bar by a wide margin, but his feet did not.

Thank you for this comment! I was actually thinking this would be what was talked about in the video, or at least given an honorable mention. The highest jump compared to jumpers height. I hadn't heard of Stefan Holm.

There was a guy who high jumped who was short. I think he held the record for the guy who high jumped the most number inches above his height. He was high jumping 7'6-7'7 but he was only like 5'8 or so. He was black, an American. I recall, he'd jump up, then when he got up towards the bar, he'd do this gyration with his body which propelled him higher up. Then he'd clear the bar. What was his name? In late '70's to '80's.??? Oooo!!! Found him!! He is even mentioned in Stefan Holm's Wikipedia page, at end of top paragraph. Franklin Jacobs, 5'8" tall. His best HJ was 7'71/4" (2.32m was world indoor record in 1978, beating Dwight Stones in that meet). Says he is tied with Holm for greatest clearance above height at 59 cm (1 foot 11 1/4 inches). Holm is 5'11". Humm??? I thought this Jacobs guy did more than 2 feet over his height. Oh well. He quit jumping and left college when the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics.

@@chrisallen2005as a former high jumper this is correct. No matter how far above the bar you are, the jump only counts if the bar stays on. I would regularly clear much higher jumps, but my technique was not refined enough to get my heels and calves over the bar.

I agree! So much of the TV time is spent on !00, 200,400,mile or 1500 meters, relays, etc. Long, high, triple jumpers, shot putters, discuss, do not get half the attention. Jan Zelezny caught everyone's attention with his javelin records. Right at 110 yards. So far they had to change shape, weight of javelin as his throws were landing on or near the track on opposite side of stadium.

I was blessed with "spring" in my DNA. Like many high jumpers, I practially bounced when I walked, but when I hit age 30, it simply disappeared and became a mere mortal. lol.

I was sitting there trying to figure out where this song came from. Knew I recognized it.

I was in the stands in New York in 2014 when Barshim and Bondarenko both jumped 2.42m in the same competition and BOTH of them were having attempts at 2.46m. The crowd was going crazy because they recognized that they were seeing something very rare. Barshim had the best attempt at it and while it was close, he just wasn't getting quite enough height to clear it. I don't know when we will ever see 2.46m. It is almost like 2.45m is approaching the human limit. Yes, there is a human limit. How do I know that? Nobody will ever high jump 4.00m or 5.00 m unless they can fly, so we know there is a limit. We are clearly approaching it.

As far as the human limits, I tend to agree however, something you aren't factoring in though in this regards is that I can see the shoe companies making jumping shoes that slightly aid in their performance similar to what is going on in the distance running genre these days with runners closing in on breaking 2 hrs for a marathon and other incredible times that are being run lately.....the other component to this human limits theory is that there could very well come along a genetic freak similar to Usain Bolt in the sprints or Crouser in the shot putt, in which they simply are physically superior to any and all prior high jumpers be it that they are 6' 10" tall yet weigh only 150 pounds but have some kind of advantage in their muscular skeletal make up........the other potential to the human limit theory is the better training and understanding how the human body works and develops.....these are things that can still evolve that will make a difference......I agree, NO one will be high jumping 4 or 5 meters......but just like the 7 foot barrier I could see a very slow progression over the 8 ft barrier once a few athletes start doing it......I do believe some of the high jump WR longevity is due more to a mental block than a physical one......I think both those guys could have jumped 2.46 had they not had some many jumps already during the competition.........

I'm pretty sure they measure the middle of the bar, so any sag would be to the jumper's disadvantage, if they were off center.

Neither do I, I also don't get 50" being the standard. That is absolutely no standard. The world record for the running vert is 50". So no idea what he's talking about and for what sport. A standing 35" vert is high.

Jordan didn't jump so high. Watch him play. Most of the time, he bent his knees to make it appear he was jumping higher.

@@sir_sack It still makes no sense relative to a basket ball rim which is at 120 inches. So the jump is just 23.5 inches below a basketball rim, no where near close to 50 inches.
