A couple of subscribers specifically asked for a demo on how to cook with zip lock freezer bags. Viewers have reported streaming problems with this version (1080i). If that happens for you, try the reloaded 720 version.
Just saw your video Thought I would share a tip . Zip Lock brand freezer bags are reusable . Turn them inside out before washing by hand or by the dishwasher ( except not use the ones that had raw meat in them ) Enjoyed your video .
I normally watch a couple of peoples videos before I subscribe. I hit that button after just this one video. You had the right amount of info in it to keep me intrigued and interested and I learned a few things. Nicely done.
Very timely for me, my friend. I was considering switching to this style of cooking, sat down to find some videos, and came across this one. I found it helpful, and I enjoyed the discussion. Keep up the good work. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to run out and buy some freezer bags.
Thank you for actually cooking in the freezer bag in the cozy. Stays hot for 20 minutes, time to gravity filter water or other camp chores, NO DISHES ! Loved your comments about balance, larger picture . BTW, empty mountain house pouch weighs 3/4 oz and is bulky trash
Great summation counselor. I love convenience and don’t like to wash pots. Thanks for the butter idea. As a section hiker I can get away with that. Thanks Steve
Enjoyed you video and learned a a lot from it. Will be using the freezer bag method on the AT this year. I tried using the foil pouch the rice sides come in but found that they actually started to leak into my coozy....thank for the great video.
Good job Steve. Going to use a bear canister for the first time. Surprising how much seven days of food weighs. This method will reduce weight and give me a better chance of fitting everything in the canister.
Thanks for the putting the video together Steve! I'm a Freezer Bag cooker...who is always trying to pick up any kind of additional tips. Keep producing the videos as I enjoy them.
Again ! Great video my friend . Best i have seen on freezer bag cooking . I bought that cozy you have in red after i saw you with it in one of your other videos . I dont think i have missed one . Followed you from day one . Thank you .
Very Informative! I will be taking a long moto-camping trip this summer and really needed some ideas for easy no mess cooking. I just went to the anitgravitygear website and bought myself a cozy. Thanks for also addressing the health & environmental issue it helped put things into perspective.
Slick setup Steve. I do love the simplicity and convenience of FBC. I've switched to the ziploc zip & steam bags. They are slightly taller albeit twice the price of the conventional ones. A small caution: they do have a small vent on the top to let the steam out so I'm careful of not tipping them upside down. Kerrygold butter is also worth the extra coin. I can consume a whole stick a day when I'm out winter-backpacking in Maine. Yum.
GSI soloist and a MSR Pocket Rocket 2 combo cooks up pasta sides like no ones business.......No sticking, and it's easily cleaned up afterward......The pocket rocket 2 has flame control and packs down nicely........Entire combo with fuel, bowl, soap, spoon, towel, sponge, salt and pepper shaker, and hand sanitizer is 1lb 7oz....It all fits in one nice kit with carrying case. No more burnt on crud to clean. And no more worries about limited meal options. I'm not saying it's the best for long distance hiking, but for weekend trips and shorter hikes, it's hard to beat its functionality....
I am with you on the short trips. I can’t tell you how many young folks i saw that just stopped cleaning out their cookware. For 900 miles I dutifully cleaned out mine but still got e,coli somewhere that took me off the thru hike in 2016
Great video Steve. Nice tip putting the package of spam in the bag along side the food. Fair trade off using the bag to cook in, like you said some cons to cleaning out your pot each night, could argue this is a better leave no trace. Little like the debate of washing out the peanut butter jar to recycle, it's recycling but now you are wasting water to clean it :-)
Steve, I`ve enjoyed tracking ER, Redbeard, Bigfoot, etc. Figured I`d seen it all... I`m finding your Trail Talk and Hiker Tip videos invaluable...and fun. I`ve noted 2 items for my gear list from your tips. Thanks much! IceagerRB
Steve, thanks for your response. Your narrative is casual, informative, and superbly detailed. I`m going thru my AWOL making notes; it looks like a scratchpad, with those I`ve made over the past year or so. How are you doing with your recovery/pt? Iceager
Coincidentally, I`m watching Trail Talk #9 right now..........I`m very interested in your stem cell results; if it`s successful I`ll research it with my achilles surgeon. What`s your pt focused on? Iceager
Strengthening the ankle and using message and ultrasound to stimulate healing. The stem cell therapy has a high rate of success with the Achilles. I have a 3cm thickness tear.
Hey I have never used the rehydrating bag. I do sew a bit. In your use of the blue bag. Would it be better if a gusset was put in the bottom so it will stand up, or would you think the extra space would adversely affect the rehydrating process. Anyway just wanting to get your input and experience ..
I think a gusset would help it stand up - and it must or you stand the chance of losing your dinner on the ground. The mountain house meal pouches has a gusset so I say go for it. The bag is made out of reflectix
Good question. May be worth experimenting with before hitting the trail. Of all the people doing freezer bag cooking, I have to admit that I have never seen anyone using powdered eggs.
I prefer butter - many long distance hikers take olive oil but not all olive oil is the same. In the USA, it only has to be 51% to be called olive oil and many manufactures cut their olive oil with garbage oils. the butter will not spoil, even in the summer over the course of a hike between resupplies.
When hiking and camping you want extra calories, protein, fat and sodium. Now is not the time to start a diet, so load up! Just skimp on the sugar, if anything.
hi. i actually called knorr... their pkg is made up of 3 layers: outer is a laminated paper, middle layer is aluminum material, and 3rd layer (that is exposed to the food) is polyethylene.... so again its softening point of polyethylene is around 195F where water boils around 212F. SO MAY NOT BE HEALTHY TO COOK OUT OF THOSE BAGS. just looking out for us hikers including you my friend. let's all spread the word :)
Hiker Biker hi. sorry to be a party pooper, but the ziploc's polyethylene plastic starts softening around 195F (mainly depending on elevation) and boiling water is around 212F. the diff btwn a freezer bag and a regular ziploc is a better seal and thicker plastic BUT softening point is the same...remember, it's a freezer bag, not an "oven bag". if you are ok with potential chemical leakage in your food, then i will shut up :) stay healthy! btw, i stay away from ramen and knorr bcuz of the MSG or MSG-like additives which is unhealthy ...and ramen noodles were fried before drying, also unhealthy :(
