Instead of a cozy, I use an insulated kid's small softside lunch container. Got it for under $5 at Wally world. It has great insulation and velcro that pulls over the top and a carry strap. Sometimes I put a few small hot rocks inside a hotpad I opened up and slide that in next to the meal for a little extra heat. The plastic bag is protected with the hot pad, but a lot of heat still comes through.
I've made my own cozzies for the Mountain House meals and the like. I just cut the top off the meal bag, add the hot water, roll the top up on the bag and stick into the cozzy pouch. No need for Zip Lock bags or other gear. No dishes to wash, just pack out the envelope the meal came in and Bobs your Uncle!
My freezer Bag Meals: Spanish Rice and Beans - Split Knorr Spanish Rice into 2 pint freezer bags. Try to evenly split the seasoning between each bag. Add 1/2 cup dehydrated refried beans. You can add some cayenne and some additional taco seasoning. On trail, add 1 cup of boiling water and let sit 12 minutes. Optional, add some cheese and Fritos. Prison Burrito - Crumble 2 snack packs of Nacho Doritos and put in pint freezer bag. Break apart Chili flavored Ramen into tiny pieces and add to bag with seasoning packet. On trail, add 1 cup boiling water and let sit ten minutes. Prison Burrito 2 - Add 1/2 cup dehydrated beans to pint freezer bag. Break apart Chili flavored Ramen into tiny pieces and add to bag with seasoning packet. On trail, add 1 cup boiling water and let sit ten minutes. Mash Potatoes - Put 1/2 cup instant mash potatoes into a pint freezer bag along with one spoon of butter crystals. You get butter crystals in the popcorn section. On trail, add 1 cup boiling water and let sit five minutes. I like the mash potatoes for breakfast. Optional, you can add pancake syrup on top and it taste like potato pancakes. Cereal - Put 1 cup of Raisin Bran, plus 1/3 cup Nido, plus 2 spoons sugar into a pint freezer bag. On trail, I add just enough water to reach top of cereal and shake bag. Instant cereal with milk. I get seven breakfast from one box of Raisin Bran. Minute Rice and Gravy - Put 3/4 cup Minute Rice and 1/4 cup gravy mix in pint freezer bag. I use Pioneer Country Gravy mix. On trail, add 1 cup boiling water and let sit ten minutes. Country Gravy - Put 1/2 cup Pioneer Country Gravy mix into pint freezer bag. On trail, add 1 cup boiling water and stir constantly for a minute. I roll up tortillas and dip into the gravy to eat. You could crumble English Muffins into the bag for simulated biscuits and gravy. Jello Pudding - Put 1 packet of chocolate pudding mix into a pint freezer bag. On trail, add 1 & 1/2 cup cold water and stir until no lumps. Let sit 15 minutes. Better in colder weather.
Great explanation of your transition from beginner to novice, it really helps folks understand the FBC method better. I use a pot cozy. Water is boiled, ziploc of food is placed in pot cozy, water is added... time to eat! The pot cozy really doesn't take up much room.
SQWIB hi. sorry to be a party pooper, but the ziploc's polyethylene plastic starts softening around 195F (mainly depending on elevation) and boiling water is around 212F. the diff btwn a freezer bag and a regular ziploc is a better seal and thicker plastic BUT softening point is the same...remember, it's a freezer bag, not an "oven bag". if you are ok with potential chemical leakage in your food, then i will shut up :) stay healthy! btw, i stay away from ramen and knorr bcuz of the MSG or MSG-like additives which is unhealthy ...and ramen noodles were fried before drying, also unhealthy :(
You all prolly dont give a shit but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Asher Hector i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Asher Hector DAMN IT ACTUALLY WORKED! I literally got access to my ig account after roughly 30 minutes of using the site. I had to pay 15 bucks but definitely worth the price =) Thanks so much, you saved my ass :D

Is there any reason why you couldn't repackage mountain house meals into freezer bags? Seems like a freezer bag would be a lot less bulky the Mountain house OEM packaging.
It saves you time & hassle in cleanup. No more having to carry soap and wasting time, energy & water trying to clean your cookware on the trail, just squeeze the air out, seal them up and stick them in your trash bag/pouch. There's also no chance of flavors being left and transferring to other meals/soups/drinks when all you do is boil water in them
You don't need to carry a pot cozy to do freezer bag cooking...most of the time the food is still to hot to eat after the 10 minutes of rehydration....I also eat raw vegetables and fruits, Power bars during the day...and a occasional meal in a restaurant.

@@joapps8135 That was neither a complete nor coherent sentence. Maybe you're the one who needs to study more. Also, I got the receipts, Kid. Time for you to hit the books: ziploc.com/en/sustainability-and-safety
Problem with rhat is now youve just added odor to your clothing which will attract mice or even a bear. Not safe. A kid just got attacked by a black bear on the AT by using lotion on hinself a few months ago.

Hmm if your so concerned then switch videos and do your own thing! Just a suggestion! Do you even hike! When up north (think nwt, Yukon) we hike with fishing rods and rifles small game over a fire and we're not usually in a rush think long liesurely stroll!
Well if you don't want to ingest something you shouldn't be eating don't put anything you shouldn't be eating in your food. Or load your freezer bag meals with mercury and crushed glass, I can't say I particularly care what you eat.
Not being a smart@ss but it ought to be mentioned that carrying a pint of rehydrating chow adds about 1 lb to the pack. Of course, that's the one day you're carrying it so for thru hikers, pretty good deal. For weekender not so much.
I don't know how you would pronounce it in english, but in German you actually do pronounce the K in Knorr. I live just a couple of streets away from their manifacturing facilities :) Yep, when the rain comes down, the puddles actually turn into Knorr soups people ^^
Hiker Biker hi. sorry to be a party pooper, but the ziploc's polyethylene plastic starts softening around 195F (mainly depending on elevation) and boiling water is around 212F. the diff btwn a freezer bag and a regular ziploc is a better seal and thicker plastic BUT softening point is the same...remember, it's a freezer bag, not an "oven bag". if you are ok with potential chemical leakage in your food, then i will shut up :) stay healthy! btw, i stay away from ramen and knorr bcuz of the MSG or MSG-like additives which is unhealthy ...and ramen noodles were fried before drying, also unhealthy :(
wow you replied to a shitton of comments here.. with the same message.. boiling water doesn't stay boiling forever .. if you wait 1 - 2 mins after boil, and pour it in .. nothing will happen, the food will cool it down further quickly...sure you shouldn't boil water directly in a ziplock bag.. that would be insane.. but pouring boiling water / almost boiling into a ziplock will have no "chemical" leakage..
I think most people generally eat crap in a daily basis, so I would not be overly concerned about a little msg or plastic leak off for that matter. I think if people use a little common sense all will be fine. I am well into my 60s still putting in big miles and hiking thousands of miles a year and I have eaten my share of crap, just not year round. Take care
holy shit look at the amount of ingredients on that mountain house packet! this is a product you should never consume ever if you actually give a shit about your health! if it's got more than 5 ingredients you should not be consuming it anyways, but in a survival situation a few more is definitely ok, but geez, that is a frigging long list!
if the food is freeze dried or deydrated, or even then frozen, then there is absolutely no need for all the crap in them as they are already naturally preserved! this is a massive f**k you in the face of nutritional science.,
most freezer bags can withstand up to 195 degrees F, if you wait 1 - 2 mins after boil and pour it in .. nothing will happen, even adding it directly is probably fine, as the food will cool it down quickly.
Unless you are one of 2% of Caucasians who are allergic to MSG, it is no worse for you than table salt. Actually, per weight, it has less sodium than table salt. MSG is a natural product (root extract) and has been commonly used in east Asia (China/Korea/Japan) for thousands of years.
