This was my second attempt to reach Alamere Falls. The first time I tried I underestimated how long it would take to get to the waterfalls. I left too late and the tide was too high. The second time around I made sure not to make the same mistakes.
Getting to Alamere Falls
There are many ways to get to Alamere Falls depending where you are traveling from but the main objective is to get to the Palomarin Trail.
Our journey started in Santa Rosa’s Coddingtown Mall at our beauty store, OFS. From there we went to Petaluma then Point Reyes Station then to the Palomarin Trail. We didn’t have to go to Point Reyes but it was a nice little detour and really simplified the route there.
Lack of Service
There is a good chance that you will not have cellphone reception in the Highway 1 area so make sure to download any maps you might need beforehand. I would also take screenshots of your map(s) so you can have them.
Also remember to bring a light sweater. The temperature changes throughout the hike.
The Terrain
One of the things I enjoyed most about this hike was the ever changing terrain. You will go from wide open areas with sun beaming on your face to densely wooded areas with virtually no light and everything in between. Some areas are wet and some areas are dry, the terrain is constantly changing mile after mile.
Steep Cliffs
These cliffs, while offering mesmerizing vistas of the rugged coastline and the endless expanse of the sea, also present a real safety concern, especially for those with young children. The Palomarin Trail does not have guardrails or fences along these steep drop-offs, which means that hikers need to exercise caution and be extremely mindful of their surroundings. For this reason, it’s worth emphasizing that this hike may not be suitable for families with small children or individuals who are uncomfortable with heights or exposed trails.
The Alamere Falls Trail
The “Alamere Falls Trail” is a hidden path near the Palomarin Trail in Point Reyes National Seashore. It can be easy to miss and is sometimes referred to as a “shortcut.” I am not sure if it is a trail that is maintained by the park but it is listed on various hiking and map applications. However, it’s narrow and might not be suitable for those who are claustrophobic. At its end, you’ll find a small waterfall, but reaching the main waterfall from here involves navigating dangerous and unstable rocks. Exercise caution and prioritize safety when exploring this trail, and be aware of its unique challenges.

This is one of two waterfalls in California that empty into the ocean. During high tide the waterfall is not accessible so look up the tide before heading out there.
