Hiplok D1000 vs Litelok X3: Angle Grinder Test

Angle grinding the Litelok X3 and the Hiplok D1000
A few points about this video:
1. The angle grinder is a mains powered 720w Makita (GA5030R).
2. Despite trying to make this a laboratory style test, to determine which is the most angle grinder resistant, there are too many variables to make any definite conclusions: it was too close.
Another test may have different results. But both are extremely angle grinder resistant!

This test was not designed to replicate street conditions, where the thieves would use battery powered angle grinders and wouldn't have the benefit of clamps. It was designed to compare the angle grinder resistance of the two locks. To see which was more secure. Using a mains powered grinder and clamps reduces variability (in power and movement), which might make the test less accurate.

Cheers for doing this test, i've been down a rabbit hole after comparing these 2 locks for my new E-Mtb. I can't imagine battery powered grinders would get through either of these bikes on 1 charge. I live in Liverpool UK, and i've had my previous Mtb attempted stolen while i was in the local takeaway watching my bike, by 2 kids that lived in my street lol. I got to it before they rode it off but i'm very very aware of how stealable E-Mtbs are especially in my city, so this video is amazing, thank you!

@@artofthereal I recently purchased a Hiplok D1000 and can confirm that at least with the D1000, the shackle reinforcement visibly extends significantly into the lock body (when the lock is open you can see the shackle reinforcement extending from the rubber sleeve) to prevent this type of attack. I can't confirm whether the Litelok has the same feature, as I have never tried to cut one, don't own one, and haven't seen videos of that kind of attack being tested.

Good test - I was surprised the Hiplok needed 5 disks tho, I was thinking the Litelok would need more disks. But yeah, I think any cutting that takes more than 2 or 3 disks to cut through is good enough for most lockups. I'm in the camp that if I feel I am parked in a location that gives me concern (dodgy area), or that I may be inside longer than I feel comfortable, I will bring my bike inside with me. I have been fortunate so far that many businesses that I have dealt with are bicycle favorable and have allowed me to bring my bike inside their premises for meetings, but in general I do confirm before any visits on their bike policy. On those occasions when I confirmed they didn't allow bikes inside I adjust my travel according - Uber, taxi or Transit/walk.

I have watched several videos testing bike locks. No one has actually done the tests under ALL of the following conditions. 1. Use portable grinder popular with thieves. 2. Include in the tests the time to change out blades and batteries on the portable grinders. In real life that time would add to cutting the locks. 3. Locking the bike locks in a more realistic scenario wrapping the rear wheel, frame and bike rack. 4. Additional second or third lock wrapping around front wheel, frame and bike rack. 5. Steps to take if you encounter thief while in progress.

Any idea about what is this yellowish material that is released when trying to cut the Hiplok? Do you think that one lock is better than other? I do not which one to choose 🤷‍♂... Thanks in advance.
@TheBestBikeLock
@TheBestBikeLock Год назад
Yep, there was definitely a difference. The Hiplok seemed to be almost "melting" the discs. With the Litelok it seemed more like the discs just weren't cutting as well, and it was more difficult to control the cutting, as the discs would jump about more. The "melting" probably accounts for why it took more discs to cut the Hiplok. In terms of which is the strongest, it's hard to be sure from this test, but they are both similar and more than strong enough. You'll get more internal locking space with the X3, so it would probably be better for e-bikes or other big frame/big wheel bikes. Whereas the Hiplok is more compact and about 15% lighter, if that's what's important.

Thanks for making and sharing this video... If I may point out, the angle grinders were plugged in, not portable. Most portable can't match the power. In addition, the locks were mounted in an optimal manner for cutting. In the real world, I believe that both locks offer prime defense to grinder attacks. My issue with the D-1000 is that the shackle interior space is too small for my e-bike to be practical. I understand that the X3 is made from ceramics. Would ceramics be prone to a liquid Nitrogen attack?
@TheBestBikeLock

I was not trying to replicate street conditions. I was trying to establish which of the two locks was more angle grinder resistant. This is easier with a mains grinder because 1) I don't have to worry about variability in battery charge 2) A mains grinder will cut them faster, so any other variability in my technique is less significant. I mounted them the way I did for the same reason: to reduce variability. The takeaway from this test is not that it's easy to cut these locks! It's the opposite.

In the streets, any thief that has half a brain will not attack the lock, but whatever the lock is attached to ! With these grinder resistant locks, the weak link is no longer the lock but whatever the city provided to lock your bike to. And then they can charge the bike and its lock in a van and then take the time to cut the lock elsewhere. That's why I think comparisons between the locks are irrelevant, even the x1 is more resistant than most things the bike will be attached to. With this reasoning, I think the x1 is by far the best lock - because it's lighter and cheaper and still good enough. And it's also longer than the D1000. So you can buy and carry two of these and lock the bike to two things that will need to be cut.

Was it you who made this video or did you just upload it ? Are you a Litelok employee or have any affiliation with the company ? did you use more pressure cutting the D1000 than the X3 ? Why did it take more discs to make the second cut ? and why did it take more discs but less time to make the second cut in the D1000 ? Which lock do you think is better ? Do you think you could have cut once and then used a metal bar to pry the lock open ?
@TheBestBikeLock
@TheBestBikeLock Год назад
1) Yes, I made the video. 2) No, I'm not an employee. 3) Yes, I'm an Amazon affiliate, but there are no affiliate links on this page, so no monetary interest. 4) Of course that's possible, but it would be accidental (this is complicated by the fact that they were filmed on different days and the grinding experience was a bit different: the D1000 felt like it was "melting" the discs, while the X3 felt a bit more abrasive). 5) It didn't: the numbers for the second cut are cumulative. 6) See answer 5. 7) In terms of angle grinder resistance, it was too close for me to call in this test. But it doesn't really matter: they are both strong enough. In terms of "better all round", it will depend on your needs and priorities. 8) Possibly, but I think it's unlikely
