My D1000 has been functioning as expected for a month now and I'm SO glad to have it. Kryptonite served me well for the last 30 years, but grinders finally made their flagship product, the NY Fagedaboudit almost useless.* So it's the D1000 now for me. I also own an Altor SAF lock and have had it for three years. It, too, is VERY grinder resistant. However, at 13 pounds, very bulky, but with VERY limited internal space, it's a challenge to use. It's fine for the "locking up at the same spot everyday" scenario, but not for carrying. The D1000 internal dimensions match the Kryptonites I've been using and suffice to catch the rear wheel between the stays, or through the head or seat tube with ease. *Not totally. I have plans to "beef up" the four NY locks I own with supplemental steel pipe filled with concrete to thwart grinders. That way I can continue to utilize these quality locks and send thieves to greener pastures.
@TechExpertHub
@TechExpertHub Год назад
You are better off using a steel pipe then cut up smaller rings of steel inside. The steel rings inside will constantly shift as they adjust their grinder. If you spring load them everytime they cut new material will appear.

@@TechExpertHub Great minds think alike! I've thought of this option. Even using bearings to make sure the outer sleeves just spin. But one could cut sideways, or bash them to stop the spinning. Or cut sideways to make that less effective. I figure if the inner sleeve is filled with concrete, that will eat up disks and make a mess before the scumbag even hits the hardened shackle. We'll see.

I see from this video the X1 is bigger than the D1000 and the X3 is bigger than the x1. The x3 is too small to go on many bike wheels so what use the d1000 is to most riders, I don’t know
@dudeonbike800
@dudeonbike800 Год назад
The larger the shackle, the weaker the lock. This lesson was learned in the 80's. You want the smallest ulock you can effectively lock with. That's why the D1000 has so little room inside. Not done by mistake. That said, a LITTLE more room would be welcome by most consumers.

I've got a d1000 and have a motorbikr, issue is it won't go round front tyre so has to go around wheel alloy which if they were to angle grind they would just cut the spoke out and bypass the lock in seconds . The d3 once available will just about fit so much better in that respect

Just bought the Litelok x1 BSB version. Went for that over the hiplok due to more wider opening even if it does make it harder to mount to the bike. A lock that you cannot even secure it to something is just a heavy paperweight.

I also got the D1000. This is likely the best U-lock money can buy - so its fair to exspect a lot. It feels a bit lower quality than a crypronite lock - Has more wiggle when closed. I hope that the parts where the locking mechanism is, is also grinder-resistant! I saw noone tesing it sadly. Some pick-resistance matters - as in no dumb, low-skill attacks should work. Grinder resistant locks are a step forward, but a determined thief in a private location, may instead opt to cut the pole, fence or rack the bike is locked to rather than wasting time trying to cut through a very grinder resistant lock. Park out where everyone can see, try not to park long, and see if your workplace will let you store your bike inside. Sometimes they will vandalize what they can't steal.
@nervesconcord
@nervesconcord 24 дня назад
As someone who knows a guy that used to steal bikes, he said that he would look for whatever was the best bike with a lock that he could have off in 20 seconds. He said of these sorts of locks, if he was still a thief and he saw a rack with a £1,000 bike with one of these on it and a £500 bike with a lock that he could cut quickly he would just ignore the more expensive bike completely. Regarding vandalism, he said that professional thieves don't do that, you aren't getting paid for the crime so why waste time, and that only young scrotes are stupid enough to do this, but at the end of the day cut cables and slashed tyres are far cheaper to replace than a frame, so these locks still really do make a difference.

I really like that it has a twisting lock feature to keep out dirt and debris. However, the mounting system is much too light for the lock, and continues to get loose/move around. It's mostly made of plastic parts, and I've had to tighten it a few times in the past week or so that I've had it. I'm worried that it's going to break off at some point while I'm riding. I'm considering just scrapping that part, but that would mean having to carry the heavy lock i my backpack and adding more weight. You could pair the Ulock with a heavy duty chain like the Pragmasis 19mm chain. That would give you the reach from the Ulock to a rack or pole.

Unfortunatly all the pro thieves have the key to unlock these strong lock! The hiplok would have been great with a better key system...

A good drill bit would be able to tear through it. As well as removing all the tumblers disengaging the locking mechanism.

Why is everyone obsessed with a lock being pick proof? I don’t know one incident of a bike being stolen with the lock being picked. The whole point of an an anti angle grinder lock is exactly that.

Lock Picking Lawyer (LPL) has made everyone smug experts on lock picking. "Just wait 'till LPL picks it in 20 seconds!" they all shout with glee. But scumbag thieves don't pick locks. It's a moot point. This is THE lock to own and use if you're locking in the worst areas and want to keep your bike.

@@kfkwAL7 well I do. My lock was picked (abus bordo), one of my friends also got her lock picked (at night I think). In Paris people do not care, you can just sit there in the street picking a lock for 20 minutes and nobody will move a finger.

@@tanguy4235 genuinely surprised someone would pick a lock on a bike, It takes years of practice and skill, not to mention tools, seems a waste of a skill! There are anti pick locks available

@@kfkwAL7 I guess someone focusing on picking just the more popular locks can, given enough time, make it a viable alternative to the angle grinder. Plus with that mindset of "no thief ever tries to pick a lock", some lock manufacturers have become very lazy in their designs.
