One of the very few albums that I've listened to in my life that I love each and every track there are just three or four other albums but the second Collective Soul their eponymous album is my favorite album of all time along with Eric Clapton Unplugged 10,000 Maniacs unplugged and maybe one or two other
As soon as the song starts I’m immediately taken back to the 90s. One of the best bands from the 90s. Try ‘The World I Know,’ ‘Wasting Time,’ ‘Gel’ or ‘Heavy’ next. Another 90s band you should check out is Gin Blossoms. Try ‘Hey Jealousy,’ ‘Found Out About You,’ ‘Til I Hear It From You’ or ‘Follow You Down.’
This era in music was amazing. I was in high school when bands like Collective Soul and Gin Blossoms were popular. But it's just now almost 30 years later that I'm able to appreciate it.
Great band and song!! Would love to hear "She Said" and "Heavy" something for both of you!! They are a great band!!!! Thank you would like more please!!
This is straight from the band - "We were going through a tough time with our first manager, and I just felt like at the time, a lot of stuff happened really quickly. You've got to remember, we had a hit song before we had a label or even a true band. So, that relationship started to deteriorate. And while we were in the studio, it came pretty natural. I just wanted to talk about how I felt I was being used and whatever I did was not good enough ever." The song is called "December" because that's the last month of the year. Ed Roland wanted to signify an ending, but wanted something more poetic and abstract than "The End" or "Finale."
Exactly right - song written about the studio system amd related managers which was still in place at the time, that just suck artists dry and then discard them as soon as they think they can't squeeze any more money from them.
Also used this way in A Long December by Counting Crows. Past few years around New Years I've been reminded of that. Maybe this year will be better than the last
@@petercourtien4581 My New Years resolution is to reset and not get emotionally involved. Don't take stuff home with me, it doesn't deserve my emotions like that. Stress is so bad for people and we let ourselves get involved. Every year (every day if i remember) I tell myself, "stop that".
Absolutely love this band - the first concert I ever took my wife to. The entire album "Dosage" is one of my favorites, not a bat song on it. For your next CS song, I would recommend "Heavy" (the guitar riff is as heavy as the song implies), "Where the River Flows", or, if you want to see their softer side, "Run". Ed Roland's voice is one of the best of the 90s. Finally I will ask again that you give a listen to the band "Live", and their tremendous frontman, Ed Kowalczyk. "Lightning Crashes" would be a great introduction, as would "Lakini's Juice".
According to Wiki, Ed Roland gave an interview in 2017, and this is what he said about the inspiration for the song - "We were going through a tough time with our first manager, and I just felt like at the time, a lot of stuff happened really quickly. You've got to remember, we had a hit song before we had a label or even a true band. So, that relationship started to deteriorate. And while we were in the studio, it came pretty natural. I just wanted to talk about how I felt I was being used and whatever I did was not good enough ever."
@@rossmacintosh5652 I honestly think Live are the best 90s band they have yet to touch on. Though if they ever react to "Possum Kingdom" by Toadies, I may just die of happiness.
I've known Ed since high school. He used to live next door to my old girlfriend back then. We used to sit on her porch and listen to them practice in their garage
The self-titled Collective Soul album from 1995 which includes December is full of great songs. I think the song December’s lyrics refers to lead singer Ed Roland feeling used by their manager and that nothing he did was ever good enough. This is a band that had a hit record before they had a label. Other songs from that album to listen to: Simple, Untitled, The World I Know, Gel and She Gathers Rain. ALL OF THEM ARE AWESOME.
Another underrated 90s band I think you'll love- Toad the Wet Sprocket 💙 "Something's Always Wrong," "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want"- lots of good songs to choose from.
Been asking them to listen to toad for far too long. The band is amazing. Hits on every album. It's all good, but those 3 and a few more stand out from the crowd.
Jay & Amber, Its time for Carole King on Female Friday. Great singer/songwriter/piano player. Recommend “I Feel The Earth Move”, “So Far Away”, “Sweet Season”, “Jazzman” or “Its Too Late”!! There’s a Broadway musical about her early life/career, using hit music she wrote with her husband and others. Its called ‘Beautiful’.
In my opinion “The world I know” is probably their best song. Atleast for me it brings me such great memories of some of the best parts of my life. I think you guys would appreciate everything about that song including the instrumentation.
@@commentatron ....you often get commenters like @Dion Share that are too stupid to know what "underrated" means. They are just so anxious to post their drivel that they resort to saying something is underrated - when it's not.
@@urbanurchin5930 Reaction channel- here's a group ..ie 1st time, not done in a awhile etc.....we're listening to today. Highly knowledgeable commenters - These guy are great,* highly, criminally, etc 'underrated ' proceeds to get excessive likes 🤢🤮 And I thought it might have just been me.
Listen to “The World I Know” and “Run” by Collective Soul… that should be good enough to have their poster on your wall 👌🏻💯💞 One of my favorite bands of the 90s and MOST UNDERRATED BAND EVER!! and you guys are my favorite reaction channel!.
Lead singer of the band and the songwriter , Ed Roland explained the meaning of this song ,"We were going through a tough time with our first manager, and I just felt like at the time, a lot of stuff happened really quickly. You've got to remember, we had a hit song before we had a label or even a true band. So, that relationship started to deteriorate. And while we were in the studio, it came pretty natural. I just wanted to talk about how I felt I was being used and whatever I did was not good enough ever." The song was recorded in December.
At some point he also said it was about a couple that was no longer in love, but were too afraid to leave one another because they feared being alone would be worse than their relationship.
Great song! Let's hear some more Collective Soul awesomeness from their self-titled 1995 album 😎: "Simple", "Gel", "The World I Know", "Smashing Young Man", "Where The River Flows", "When The Water Falls", "Collections of Goods" 🎧🎶😎🔥
Collective Soul is such a good band, I've always enjoyed them. The 90s had so much good music. I'm a boomer and love the 60s and 70s music, but the 90s are right up there with them. Give a listen to The Gin Blossoms song "Hey Jealousy", great jangly guitars throughout, you'll love them! Peace!
You guys should try a band called the New Radicals. They have several really good songs. “You Get What You Give” and “Someday We’ll Know” are the songs I’d recommend.
😂You know you’ve been around when you refer to 20 plus year old albums as newer stuff!! I’m right there with you! But you’re right, all their stuff is great because they know the fan base. Even the newest album Blood is a fun listen.
Yeah but don’t sleep on “This” from 2015. It’s the perfect Collective Soul song-not necessarily the best, but perfect. It has all the signature sounds in one track.
I hate that they just released their 11th studio album, Vibrating, today and I haven't seen any reactions for it! "Cut The Cord" and "All Our Pieces" are FUCKING AMAZING! This comes from a 23 year old girl. I have seen them live 10 times and I met the whole band a million more times! They are my favorite band and their current stuff is just as incredible as the old! Blender is my favorite album though :)
my sister was the teacher for their kids.. great bunch of guys from a small Georgia town (Stockbridge ) Will Turpin taught my bro in law, and nephew to play Bass.. He does much of the background vocals.. December was for The End of a very disruptive time in their career, they had just finished up a big lawsuit with their former manager
Cool born and raised in the Stockbridge Henry County area. The Roland guys are great. Their Dad owned Reel to Reel Studios and that's where they cut their first 3 albums. Ed Roland is also a graduate of juilliard in New York.He has a Master in music theory
Their 1997 album “Disciplined Breakdown” is one of the most underrated albums of the 90’s IMO. “Precious Declaration”, “Maybe”, “Forgiveness”, & “Giving” are all f’ing awesome, but the whole album is great.
That album was remastered VERY recently and has been rereleased. Their Facebook page has been posting it and also listing their brand new album as well.
"Run" is such a great, light, airy song, so different from their other stuff (it's got violins!). "Words" and "She Said" are also great tracks off that album.
When you reacted to "Shine", I had mentioned that my husband and I were getting ready to go to the ZZ Top concert, and to our pleasant surprise Collective Soul was playing with them. We saw the concert, and it was awesome! Collective Soul was absolutely amazing. They played all their great hits, including "Shine" and "December". Their sound quality and performance were top tier, and at 65 and 67, we felt like teenagers again! Thank you for reacting to CS again! I absolutely love them! 💙✌
@@servandomorales8765 WOW! Well, if I live long enough, I will definitely see Collective Soul again, and as many times as possible! I was also pleasantly surprised that Shaman's Harvest was really great too! I had never heard of them! 💙✌
@@servandomorales8765 you've seen CS live 46 times? That's incredible. I think Why Part 2 is about their best song, I like it way more than Shine. Where would you rank it? Heavy and Gel are also awesome.
Collective Soul had a really good sound. Two bands and “songs” to consider that are from the same era are Dishwalla “Counting Blue Cars” and Course of Nature “Caught in the Sun” You’ll love them both!
From my understanding, Ed (the lead singer) wrote the song after leaving their prior record label on not so good terms. It was intended to signify the end of one era and the beginning of another one. The guy singing the backup vocal at the end is Will Turpin the bassist. Only he, Ed, and Ed's brother Dean (rhythm guitar) are still with the band. Ross Childress (lead guitar) left the band a couple of albums later.
Collective Soul actually has a ton of good music. Most people will recommend stuff from their first couple albums, but there is so much more after. "Energy", "Hollywood", "Why Pt. 2", "Right as Rain", "Good Place to Start", "Fuzzy", "Crowded Head", "Tremble For My Beloved", "AYTA", "Hurricane", "Better Now", et cetera.
These guys have a harder/heavier side to explore... "Heavy", "Gel", "Where the River Flows" and "Precious Declarations" would be great examples to have a listen to. All blend terrific, driving guitar riffs with great vocal melodies. I'm older and came of age and reached well into adulthood listening to '60s, '70's and '80s music, but CS was definitely one of the artists that kept my interest in new music running high through the '90s as well. Actually got into them listening to my then teenaged son's music... in fact I still have his "Hints, Allegations and Things Left Unsaid" CD in MY collection. The Black Crowes were another group from around that time that I "stole" from my son.
My favorite songs by this band are “Heavy” and “Better Now” they are both heavier songs than the two you’ve reacted to so far, I think would love them.
My husband took me to see them and Three Doors Down for our 20th Anniversary a few years ago. They are true musicians and took the time to make every song new and special with artistic spins and embellishments. They out shined even their polished studio versions. I left even more impressed than I excel fed going in.😍
Great choice. I was a fan of this group -- haven't thought about them in along time. Need to go digging for those cds buried in a box somewhere in this apartment. Anyway, "December" was Collective Soul's 3rd chart single on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking @ #20 in 1995. Between 1994 - 1999, Collective Soul charted 8 singles, 3 in the Top 20, none in the Top 10. Biggest hit was their first single "Shine" peaking @ #11 in 1994. You've already done that one. The title "December" brings another good record to mind, "A Long December" (#6) by Counting Crows from 1996/1997. Check that one
Counting Crows! R&A went NUTS for "Mr. Jones" but haven't been back to them since. "Rain King" or "Einstein on the Beach" would be great choices as well. Great choice, Mr. Whit-ness! (my new nickname for you, hope that's ok)
❤️❤️❤️ LOVE!!! So many layers. Amber, watching you enjoy it, is exactly how I feel. The whole album "Allegations and Things Left Unsaid" is wonderful. Totally worth owning! Saw them live in a smaller room at the University of Calgary when the album very first came out. Intimate personal setting with sooo much energy. It was awesome!
Great band, many top 10 hits but not that well known for some reason. Try Heavy, Where the River Flows, Listen, Precious Declaration, Gel, World I Know, or Bleed.
LOVE this song so much. The drums really get me. Awesome! For a rock band Collective Soul was so so tight sounding. They're musicality is top notch, like ear candy and hits me in the heart and soul. Perfection.

You guys need to react to collective soul’s song “ Heavy “. It’s a great song, you would probably like it. It’s one of my favorite’s by them among others but Heavy has a special place in my heart. I LOVE IT. IT ROCKS!! 🤟😎🎸🤟😎🎸
When are you gonna react to Green Day? So many hits: Basketcase… When I come around…. Holiday…. Boulevard of broken dreams… longview… American idiot… etc…
They are one of the best bands, and still around and performing. Ed Roland is the lead singer and formed the band. They are from Georgia. All southern gentleman! Celebrated 25 th anniversary in 2019.
Please check out Collective Soul's song "Cut The Cord". They just released their 11th studio album today and this is on it! Collective Soul is known for their upbeat rock and roll tunes and you haven't heard ROCK until you've heard "Cut The Cord"! Like I said, it's brand new so please show some love to this band that is still rocking for 30 years! Please please please don't skip this suggestion. I help work for the band with their social media stuff and it would be AMAZING for them to see you react to their new song. I'll even show them!
Great '90s Band, and this one is Great! But I only heard them on car radio back in the day. I liked all I heard, but don't recall too many songs of theirs. Looking forward to more Guys! Great Reaction & Review!
I’m glad y’all got back to these guys. I do have a suggestion y’all really need to throw into your mix soon. His name is Jonny Lang and the song you should react to first is Lie to Me. To me since you loved Kenny Wayne Shepard I believe you’ll love this guy. He has a bit of bluesy type sound to him. Trust me just give him a try.
I used to get up early for school to try and catch this song on MTV, and still love it nearly 30 years later. Would love to see you guys react to "Cold Little Heart" by Michael Kiwanuka
Another great one for Female Friday would be the amazing Jan Arden singing 'Insensitive'. It will blow their minds! Jay will forget all about football...
