I don’t know if this was my first time hearing heavy metal, but it’s the first I remember for sure. I was about 7 yrs old when the video premiered, and it was obviously unforgettable. Phil Anselmo’s mom was close with my family back in New Orleans, so I got an education in metal over the next couple years after that seeing their early Pantera shows with him. But this song was my metal intro for all intents and purposes.

I agree with this. I was 10 when this came out. I wasn't a metal fan. I liked rock, I liked hip hop, pop, but never got into metal. Then one day my cousin (who also wasn't a metal fan) said, "have you heard about that song One by Metallica?", We bought the And Justice For All cassette that day, we had to hear what people were talking about. After that I was a metal fan.

More like they brought this style of Metal (Speed/Thrash) to the world. Metal had been around, in various forms. since the 60's with Black Sabbath, which to me is Metal in its purest form. Then you had bands like Led Zepplin, KISS, Van Halen, Motorhead, and Quiet Riot, leading into the 80's Metal Explosion. Twisted Sister, Motley Crue, Poison, Warrant, Ratt, WASP, Def Lepard, and many others helped to make Glam/Hair Metal the standard for a decade. Metalica and Megadeath introduced fans to a whole new genre by the late 80's. And by the early 90's, for the most part, it was over. While many bands remained wildly popular (especially Metallica) Heavy Metal's era was over. BTW, I think I was 19 when I first saw this video on Headbangers Ball. And I can still remember the looks on James Hetfield's face when they performed this song at the Grammy's.

The movie clips are from an old movie called, Johnny Got His Gun Today. He was blown apart and his jaw was blown off. The movie is mostly his thoughts like it shows here. The nurse and doctors eventually realize that his frantic head movements are actually him using Morse Code and they are able to communicate with him.

“One” is always a very hard song the first go round. Because you’re so focused on what the soldier is trying to say. When you realize he’s begging for death it hits you. And as Amber pointed out as a parent, mothers more so, hearing someone cry out for their parents brings it close to home. Amber you got through it better than I thought from reading this video title. This is what’s so amazing about music. It can make you feel a ton of emotion every time you hear the same song. Music in general can set a mood or bring you up or down depending on how you feel. It can bring back great memories or make you suffer through bad ones again. Nothing else can do that in my opinion

Had to read the book, "Johnny Got His Gun" in High School English class and I'll never forget it, (I was a Vietnam Era kid). He was injured in the war with no arms, no legs, no face - no way to communicate, but he could hear everyone around him. He finally realized he could tap out Morris Code with his head and an old battle nurse finally realized what he was doing...😱😪🤧

It had an eerie ending because it didn’t resolve. He apparently lived on indefinitely feeling isolated and helpless and we aren’t given any idea what became of him. I was struck by the fact the book is only from his perspective. I’ve seen thd movie and it’s better in a way than the book because you at least know what’s going on beyond his perspective.

Such the rabbit hole u exposed her to. Metallica is notorious for diving into hard , or emotional topics. And the lyrics are powerful. They run the gambit. Thoughts of suicide, anti war, false religion, drug addiction, corruption in government, they have no filter on their thoughts. And they should not. Who said thrash metal was just screaming? Its more deep than that. And they convey the feeling soo well through the instruments. Liked the 1st reaction, loved the 2nd with u both. ❤️

I was in high school when I read the novel 'Johnny Got His Gun' by Dalton Trumbo. I read it because I had been told about a piece for my speech team. I did a small section of the novel for "Dramatic Prose" interpretation...it was so hard to do. I felt so horrible and drained after the first time I performed it. It got to a point where I just couldn't do it. It was too much to think about. I was 17 years old and I had been thinking about joining the military to help with college. This story scared me so much that I quit that piece and decided against joining the military. This was around 1989. Just after I graduated high school, Desert Storm happened. I felt like I dodged a bullet. Because I read this novel...and when I heard this song for the first time, I wept. I knew the subject matter that Metallica was utilizing. And I came to Metallica very late...in my mid-thirties, I finally heard this band for the first time. I almost never listen to "One"...it's too hard. Like Amber, I am very empathetic to others. However, it was this song that truly made me love Metallica. They weren't just some band with amazing songs...they were true artists. Thanks.

Amber Metallica always has a deep message in their songs. It's the reason their music has endured so long. This song is designed to hit you hard and make you think, but basically it's an anti-war message. That we should rethink why we support war and realize that what happened to this man is not just an unfortunate event, but something we as a society chose to engage in. Metallica is using the shock value to challenge our glorification of war. Thank you for sticking with it. Look at what they say in their songs first and you will appreciate their music much more.

Props to Lars on this one, he banged out some sweet drums here. Saw these guys in Minneapolis a couple of years back. When they started playing this song, you could see a plane landing at the local airport. It looked like a copter landing in an LZ. It was intense. War is hell. WWI was particularly so. I appreciate Metallica paying tribute to the vets of that war.

I was 13 when "creeping death" was released. My very progressive church with an extremely progressive youth minister used the song to teach about the book of "Exodus" and the passover. Metallica was never just about the sonic boom of their sounds alone. Their lyrics, almost always told a great story too. Combined together, sound and lyric, and you get some of the best music ever written.

As an army vet with 2 deployments I understand this song in a very real way. When I saw Amber start to get emotional, I lost it and the tears flowed freely and I'm not ashamed. They so beautifully put emotions into this song that helps others understand what it can be like when we get back home. A large part of us stays in the war zone and flash backs make living back home difficult at times. Thank you both so very much for your love and respect of the military, it's greatly appreciated. I would like to suggest fade to black, there's a version set with saving private Ryan as the back ground, you won't be disappointed

When you said "a large part of us stays in the war zone" it immediately reminded me of a Vietnam vet I got to know when my mom was in a nursing home near the end of her life. He once said "Sometimes the part I left behind tries to reach out and pull me back. It can be hard to live with. But then sometimes the part of me that came back tries to reach out and drag what I left behind into this reality. That's what really scares me because while I didn't come back the same person I left as, a lot of what got left behind is something I never want to be part of me again."

She is amazingly and warmly sympathetic. People confuse that with empathy. Empathy is actually a relatively new term. Sympathy is when you feel for another and react to that. Empathy is sort of a negative thing because someone claims to actually BE in someone else's pain which is basically impossible without the experience of it. An example would be, being sympathetic to the pain and suffering a solder returning from the war is going through, but if you have not been in war yourself there is NO WAY you could be empathic to them.

So what you guys saw in the video, and basically what the song is saying, is based on the 1939 novel and 1971 film of the same name called "Johnny Got His Gun". It's about a WW1 American soldier who accidentally steps on a landmine during battle. The explosion leaves him critically injured: All four limbs, his jaw, his eyes, his nose, and his ears all blown off. But he is still conscious. And through his mind, while drifting between reality and memories of his childhood with his father and girlfriend, he starts growing insane and wants to kill himself rather than spend the rest of his life trapped in a useless body with no arms and no legs, and unable to move, see, hear, or speak.
