On Broadway, first round NHL draft pick Gene Carr was dubbed the New York Rangers next superstar.
In LA, he became the Kings “New Kid in Town” and was influential in some of rock ‘n roll’s most iconic songs and albums.
But by 1979, his fascinating life and colorful career were gone - replaced by the harsh realities of non-stop pain, crippling addictions, failed marriages and the betrayal of the hockey establishment.
Many people forgot about Gene Carr … until he returned to the spotlight in 2019, when the new kid in town discovered he might also have a new kid … in his life.

Gene Carr signed my youth hockey yearbook when he was on the LA kings. I still have that yearbook… and his signature has much more meaning than it did before I watched this video.

Life is hard. Tough life for Gene, but I'm really glad he got to meet his greatest accomplishment later in life. His great career is overshadowed by his being a loving father to his daughter. All the best Gene.

God bless Gene Carr. I was a seven year old boy in a Northern Ontario town names Dunchurch population 100. Local hockey hero Floyd Thomson of St. Louis Blues organized a charity softball game between our Lions club and some NHL stars in the summer of 1975. Terry Crisp and Bobby Orr showed up which blew our minds. My step father played left field for the Lions. Gene Carr was the most memorable to me besides Orr. He actually hung out with me and my step brothers and kindly signed autographs. I thought he was very cool and was delighted to find his hockey card in my collection so I could read about him. His blond hair and kindness was memorable.

Your story-telling skills are absolutely incredible. You incorporate life and sports so seamlessly and it's much appreciated. It's nice to hear the personal side of the athletes whom we're familiar with. I never saw Carr play but I remember him through his hockey cards as an LA King. I never knew he'd played with the Rangers though. As a sensitive kid playing in New York back then must've been tough on him. Glad he's found happiness through his family.

A great tribute to a wonderful hockey player. As a kid I was a 'Rink Rat' at the Flin Flon Bomber home games. Carr was a wonderful skater and tough as well. At the end of one season he game me his Tac skates which were really "rockered", worked for him but not for anyone else especially me. I am happy he found love and happiness with his daughter.

Is he really your grandfather? I'll never forget when he was traded to the Kings. I got to see him play in LA and when living in St. Louis and the Kings came to town. He instantly became one of my favorites. I used to pretend to broadcast games when we played hockey or tabletop hockey. It always included a pass from "Dionne to Carr...he shoots...he scorrres!!! ". I really enjoyed this video, but I'm saddened by the suffering he endured. I hope he is doing well.

Gene Carr was one of my heroes as a kid. I adopted his name one year at school and would write his name as my middle name on papers I turned in. One big thrill I had as a kid growing up in Los Angeles was when he was rehabbing an injury and skated on the ice with my team at Culver City ice rink to get some work in. I cheered my lungs out for him at games. He was fast, and the coolest player around with his long blonde hair flowing behind him as he tore down the ice. After his career was over he showed up at a construction site looking for a job my dad was working on. I remember my father being impressed that he was humble enough to want to work after having had a sports career. Very sad story, but it appears he found love and his place-- so that is heartwarming. Thanks for trip down memory lane!

Its great how you tell the back ground story of how he knew the Eagles and about his daughter and especially about the pain he suffers from his injuries. I pray Gene finds comfort and I'm happy he's found a loving wife and a beautiful daughter! This video is definitely going in my "Favorite Teams History" playlist! It was really cool learning about his connection to a couple of great rock bands and especially the part about the song New Kid in Town. Never knew that...now that song takes on a whole new meaning. And how blessed he and his daughter are to find each other after all those years.

@Willy I believe the post refers to the era Mr Carr #12 played in but after retiring due to injuries and down the road reached out to then commissioner Bettman era about taking care of the vets of the 70s in retro care-cash-whatever.. I love my Kings and fortunate enough to see Marcel, Shultz , Rollie the Goalie, Tiger Williams, the rookies Jimmy Carson , Lucky Luc , vet Butch Goring, so many great players of the 70s i also saw live into 80s with LA until #99 came to town. By then most if not all, were gone by then. Damn I’m 56 and still feel 12 -28 years old at my very first pro hockey game as the memories flood & I was hooked. I carried on the tradition by inviting exactly 46 different friends , military buddies, girlfriends, work associates.. I retired from watching in 2014 after their 2nd Cup in 3 years. Hockey ain’t the same and neither are all pro sports. Forever young at heart..

Thanks, Steven ... I am humbled by your kind words. Someday, I may post something about the creative process but to answer your questions: It takes a few weeks to produce a quality video (not full time). Just when I think I'm done, I realize I'm not. The last 48 hours are crucial and often change the entire tenor of a video. It takes at least a week to research and collect media. Then the script and then the creative process. As far as the subjects, I make a mental note of good stories and interesting people I've heard about over the years and, if the mood is right, I'll immerse myself mentally and emotionally in that story until its done. I never know month-to-month what subject I'll produce -- it just has to hit me one day and I'll roll with it. I hope this helps -- and thank you again!

Thanks, Steve! A superior comment and I enjoyed reading it. It was pretty coincidental that the two of the very few live Carr goals I could find were both breakaways against Dryden and in the Montreal Forum.

Carr's daughter, Tracy, is quite pretty. You can see the resemblance particularly in their smiles.

Gene Carr should have received help for his stem cell surgery from the NHLPA. I can’t believe their lack of compassion. That he finally met up with his daughter after so many years must help ease the pain.

Not used to the happy ending part of your life recaps! Must say I was waiting for the tragic death part of the story. Nice twist....great work as usual.
