I have fostered more scared and feral cats and kittens than I can count, and over the years I have learned what REALLY works to get them from HISSING to KISSING...fast! What's the first thing I do when I bring a hissy baby home from the shelter? I put him or her in a box! That's a SOCIAL BOX, a small crate that I can easily move around the house so that the kitten has plenty of exposure to people and other cats.
You see, exposure to the very things a cat is afraid of is the key to helping him overcome his fear, and if you allow a scared cat or kitten to hide away in a closet or under furniture, they will never get used to you. With a Social Box, there's room for a small litter box and food/water bowl, and the kitten can observe his surrounding from a safe place. But he can't run and hide, eliminating the stress and frustration of trying to lure a frightened cat out from under a sofa or a bed.
While in the Social Box, the kitten gets to be part of the family, watching people walk around, watch tv, work, play...while also receiving yummy treats and human gentle interaction. This exposure helps lessen the fear, and it's the first step in helping a fearful cat or kitten acclimate to a new home and family. In this video, I will demonstrate the Social Box with kittens, but it can also be used for adult cats too, with a larger crate.
So if you have a scared or very shy new kitty who wants to hide...the Social Box really works!

Have used the social box with both of our "never had been with people before" cats. One was a fearful adult. Both cats are now indistinguishable from cats handled gently as kittens very early on. Also, I have a 10 foot square spare room our cats also use and there are no hiding places in that room. Both cats have been introduced to being carried upside down in my arms and both have taken to it. Any fear shown by my cats is greeted with cuddles until they are set to purring. Kitten School for the win.

Every video from Kitten school gets an automatic thumbs up from me even before I watch it. I love the concept of the social box although I've never had to use it personally. In 40+ years of cat ownership we've never had a problem introducing new cats to one another nor did we ever have one you might consider feral. They always seem pretty friendly from the outset around our house, even the stray we took in 3 years ago. One commenter on You Tube said we must have a friendly house where cats do not feel threatened in any way, thus they always get along almost instantly. Or maybe we're just lucky. I always keep Kitten School techniques in the back of my mind just in case a problem child were to come along or if something unexpected develops with the present kitties! :-)

I've been using a social box for over a year because of ur channel. Not only does it tremendously help them but they keep me company while I drag them from room to room cleaning the house. 😻😻😻

Great to hear! I am absolutely thrilled to know that the Social Box is working for you. And you are RIGHT - it helps cut down on the mess, too! Kittens can be really messy if they have not learned to use a litter box. Thanks for the comment!

Lovely video and very helpful. It's great to have you back again. Our cat is very aggressive to all other cats especially the neighbours. Any suggestions to help her socialise and stop fighting? Best wishes from Sheffield.🤗🐈😸

Hi, I rescued two 7 (ish) week old kittens, and I didn’t know how to introduce them properly. The 6 month olds we have HATE our new family members. They’ve all met the babies, and they don’t want to be anywhere near them, especially the two females. How can I help them get along?

I have a Bengal at 13 weeks now. She will not let us come close, if we get too close she hisses at us and runs away. Do you think a social box would work on a Bengal? They are a really energetic type of cat.

Is it better to socialise kittens in the social box one at a time, or in a pair (if they are used to being together)?

We have two timid kitties, 12 weeks. When I put the most social in the social box, she meows and tries to paw her way out. Should we just let her stay until she calms down?

Where can you get a white/blue pet crate at? I can't seem to find one that fits well on chairs or tables 🤔

I have had this one a long time, but I think I bought it from Petco?

I'm trying to socialize 2 feral kittens right now, and while this seems like a good tool, one thing that is never explained, is how to get one into the social box in the first place? When you can't even touch them?

In my case for the adult tom cat that had to be trapped from the countryside, I used a larger crate as the social box and opened the trap directly into the crate and quickly shut the door. I used boards positioned from the top through the slats of the crate to wall off the crate so I could change the litter box without the cat escaping. For the starving feral kitten, found in a ditch emaciated, I lured her into a carrier with food. From there into the social box making sure there was no way of escaping very far if things didn't go smoothly. Food was my friend in both cases. It wasn't long before I could handle the kitten pretty easily and only got bit once and that did not even break my skin. The adult feral took 4 months before I could pet him and was far more challenging. Each cat and each case is a bit different I reckon. Others may have better tips for you than I. Good luck. Your two kittens are very lucky to have you.

@@jameschristiansson3137 Thank you for replying. We rescued these kittens on Thursday evening, and they are still very scared. Will eat in front of us now, but don't seem to like to be petted. If they're not eating, we can't get get close to them. I wonder if we got them too late--the vet said (last Friday) they are about 9 weeks. Should we forcibly hold and pet them, like some sources recommend? I don't think they will ever just "come around" of their own free will.

@@lizzy-wx4rx I'll leave that to Caroline who has oodles of experience. It was two weeks before my kitten came around. Being so near death made me as a source of food pretty special to her.

@@jameschristiansson3137 Ok, thanks. I think I maybe just need to be more patient (I've never done this before)--they already are letting us pet them while they eat. Still can't pick them up, but hopefully soon.
