Historic Wendover Utah/Nevada - Airfield Museum
The desert oasis of Wendover may be best known today for land speed records attempted on the nearby Bonneville Salt Flats, but this state-straddling community first used this world-renowned, otherworldly landscape as a top-secret military training site during World War II. This remote desert landscape was a specialized training base for B-17 and B-24 bomber crews, including the 509th Composite Group and B-29 Enola Gay unit who carried the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Today, military history lovers will discover a nearly complete historic Wendover Air Force Base-turned-Historic Wendover Airfield Museum Plus the victory highway - Lincoln Highway and more

You'd think the WW2 air base commanders would have insisted on a 'no photography' policy for security reasons, especially with the Manhattan Project in full swing. But the official photographer did a wonderful job capturing those momentous times.

My father, a civilian scientist, helped develop the "Fatman's" implosion detonator at Los Alamos, but occasionally went to Wendover to assist in the practice loading of inert Fatmans into B-29's. Fatmans were so large that they had to be lifted up into a bomber from a pit in the parking apron. Many years ago I asked him if he liked Wendover. He said no, it was to too windy and dusty unlike New England where he lived before the war.

I grew up in Wendover in the 50's, the base was still active and there were dozens of surplus B-29's and B-17's stored there. There was no West Wendover then, and the Nugget Casino was the Stateline and across the street where the Montego Bay is was the A-1 club, ( both owned by the same family), as a kid I would jump the fence and go out to the base and sneak into the hangers, where I would be a pest to the guys working there on the planes, mostly C-119's and F-86 jets, asking a million questions, some airmen would buy me a Coke sometimes, others ignored me and one time a sergeant grabbed me and put me in an Air Force truck ( what a treat!) and took me home, he knocked on the door and my Mom came out and he asked her to keep me off of the base, after he left, I ran down the road, crawled through the fence and beat him back there. I also got out to the Salt Flats with my dad to watch the cars run, that was exciting! I still try to get out there for Speedweek when I can, but it's more difficult as I age. Sometimes I wish I could turn time back to that magical place and be seven years old again.

Excellent presentation Russ. Congrats to Wendover for maintaining the old WWII base. After combat flying P-39 fighters on Guadalcanal, in 1944 my father was assigned as a flight instructor at an Army Airbase in Thomasville, Georgia. Decades later, he & my Mom were driving past Thomasville on the I-95 interstate when they decided to make a detour to visit the old airbase. They stopped at a gas station to ask for directions. The young attendant told them there had never been an airbase in Thomasville. My father told him, "Just point the way to the city airport; that's where it was."

Oh yes. Ive spent many or hours at this historic airfield. You could climb up that tower to the platform if you wanted. Also, some movie trivia. The Movie Independence Day, parts of it was filmed there at the field. The part there the aliens come down and shot up the Military and their jeeps, etc., that was filmed over on the south side of the field. Another movie trivia is that old plane you walked into, that was the Airplane prop that was used in the movie Con Air 1997 with Nicolas Cage. That is the plane that crashed and was driven down the city street in the movie. A lot of famous people stepped foot on that plane. So much more history there that you wasn't told about. So, off to Ely now. Are you going to go to the visit the train yard and see the ghost train, maybe take a trip on it? You will be amazed at the history there. Hopefully you will catch the tour of the entire facility and get the back story on everything about the train yard. I'm looking forward to seeing your Vlog about it.

My unit re-opened Wendover airfield in 1980 and we returned in 81, 84, and 85! I went on 3 of the 4 deployment. We almost didn't go in 80 because Mt Saint Helen's just erupted and there was real concern about volcanic ash causing major problems with jet engines. Also Iran had just changed over and the USAF wanted extensive bare base desert combat flying. We went there in early June and it snowed on the other side of I-80 the first night we were there. It was a very memorable deployment. Actually most everybody who went volunteered to go again! The USAF stopped going there in 85 because Nellis AFB was about 500 miles away and difficult to support from that far away!

I live one hundred miles from Wendover and have worked with Hill AFB ut. On some aspects of the museum. My father was stationed there when his squadron left England. The base was far fron prying eyes so the B-29 crews dropped concrete fill castings to simulate the atomic bomb. Gifs had no where to go for R&R so a Mormon entrepreneur bought a large canvas military chow hall tent and opened a small casino. Mind you it was over one hundred miles from SALT lake city and two hundred miles to Elko. A two lane highway east and west and a railroad both ways. My father told me of many of missions lasting for hours before bombing runs over the Great Salt Lake. HIS bomber wasn't selected to go with Tibits to the specific theater. I unassisted Hill AFB environmental personnel remove acetylene tank on mountains used for navigation sighting. Great
