As a child we once vacationed in Myrtle Beach, thus leaving us traveling I-77 South from Cleveland to South Carolina. It was such a backroad experience that my father said, "Never again." In time I-77 was improved and my parents enjoyed Myrtle Beach many times in their retirement. I happen to enjoy traveling the backroads, through small towns, and seeing the beauty of mother nature.

What a hard life, To be working under ground, and to go to work every day and hope and pray that you'll get back to fresh air and family. So much of the time it was generations of mining past on father to son. It was a time of different and I think better values. Things never stay the same, constantly changing. West Virginia is beautiful. Thank you for the view.

The reason there are so many ATV's on the road is because of the Hatfield and McCoy Trails system in southern WV. There are like 500-600 miles of trails available to ride in like five different trail systems in southern WV. People come from all over to the ride the trails and spend sometimes weeks here riding the trails. They often bring their RV's and camp at ATV resorts. People come from surrounding states and states even further away. The trails bring in a lot of tourism. It's a nationally known trail system.

Actually as I recall the bridge, and I watched it being built, is cor-ten, a steel that oxidizes and forms a protective paint like coating, so it does not require painting.

We just finished watching this video. Just found your channel yesterday. We were particularly interested in this video because we've been to the New River gorge bridge. Thought I'd pass on a couple of fun facts about the New River that I didn't hear mentioned. 1. The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world. 2. Out of the hundreds of thousands of rivers on our planet, the New River is one of less than a hundred that flow from South to North. I'd also like to add that, on the 3rd Saturday in October, there is a New River Gorge Bridge Jump Day where base jumpers will jump off the bridge. Maybe you should plan another trip, where you can kill 2 birds with one stone. That should also be right about peak season to see the areas Fall tree colors. 😀 Loving the channel and looking forward to watching more of your vids.

Beautiful, i live and work in NC but i have a home in Quinwood WV, it's SO quiet there it's like sleeping in heaven, not even mail delivery. I have a friend in Beckley, Quinwood is down Rt 64 Sandstone Mountain, my home is one of a few with a driveway so yes many have on street parking, some areas and former businesses in shambles after the coal mining slowed down. Hatfield and McCoy trails are super popular there and people come from all over to ride them. Welch had a SERIOUS flood many years ago. This Country gives billions to illegals who never paid a penny in taxes but LOTS of those people there have hard lives barely making ends meet and they work, shameful in my opinion.

Makes me miss it. So beautiful! A large Swiss population settled the Helvetia, WV area & they still have homes/small cafes there. It's a lovely town just north of where you are on video & some of the homes resemble the cottages on the mountains of Switzerland. Very Swiss. In WV, they have ATV events/challenges like the Midwest has Rodeos & Tractor Pulls. Also, most can afford an ATV if they cannot maintain a car & it's faster to get around the mountains on the 'snake curving roads' up & down the mountains in an ATV. Not a lot of jobs there as a rule, the ATV's are more economical to use there. Good video!

Thanx for sharing, I was born and raised just down the road from Helvetia. Knew some of the people from Helvetia and Pickens. Eleanor owned and operated the Hute' restaurant in Helvetia. A lot of small towns or communities are built near the road. That's usually where the land is flattest. It's easier to build down near the road then up in the hillier areas. The roads were usually built in the valleys near the bottom, where the rivers and creeks were. Again because it was flat. Railroads were most often built there too. No roads up on the hillsides or not as many. It's like that all over WV because the whole state is covered with hills. The lay of the hills isolated the towns and made road construction expensive.

I got lost in the northern border of W Virginia when a big storm knocked out GPS. It sent me through some beautiful areas with large horse ranches and vineyards. Then through the scenic mountain areas. There were a lot of very rural small towns. It took hours and hours to get to the regular highway. Many retired people must have lived there because there was nothing else around for miles on end. No where to work or shop. No gas stations either. A little scary since most of the way I had no GPS or phone service. I followed one big truck that seemed also lost. He actually waved bye when we got to the regular road. 😅 I can’t wait to actually return to the first part of that road, the vineyard and horse ranches area. It was right out of the capital. Different than all the cole mine towns.

They really have expanded what used to be the Beckley Exhibition mine. At one point in my career in the 70s I did some geologic mapping and a lot of underground coal sample collection. More recently I did some of the latest geologic maps of Park Service properties. During the first period I lived in Rainelle east of the bridge on US 60. I watched the bridge being built and ultimately dedicated. One point most do not realize is coal markets can be divided into two segments Metallurgical and capable of being coked and steam coal for power generation. The New River and Pocahontas coal fields are somewhat different in that they do a specific gravity separation and the lighter coal becomes metallurgical and the heavier becomes steam coal. The metallurgical fraction is literally some of the best in the world and the steam coal is still very low sulfur. That is why it is mostly gone. The bridge is self protecting cor-ten steel that never needs to be painted and never has been. It was that color when delivered.

Thank you soooo much for taking us on the ride with you, I’m scared of heights and therefore can’t drive across mountains or bridges without suffering a huge panic attack but you’ve made it possible for me to enjoy the beautiful scenery like I was there myself ❤

The bridge did look as if it could do with some paint ! But in the description / data board , it said it was " Cor-Ten " steel , which makes its own rust- coloured coating , so it doesn't need painting. Neat ! 😊. 🇬🇧😊🌲⭐🌿🦉🌈🇬🇧

On several occasions during my high school and college years we traveled to the New River and rafted down the river. Great Trip. I recently learned that the area had become a national park. Definitely a place that is on my list of things to do. You can actually do a tour/hike under the surface of the bridge. We will have to see about that one.

There's free cabins to stay in all along the Appalachian trail. 4 wheeling on the Hatfield and McCoy trails extends through 3 states. 💯🎉🎊

I have been to the New River Gorge in West Virginia. It was a tough hike to get back to the top on a day when it was 85 degrees.

You should have stayed on 52 all the way to KY. It gets even more beautiful north of Welch. I drove that road for years in a semi

🙋‍♀Hello Russ! I loved the ride up 77N to Beckley 19N onto 79N when traveling to Pittsburgh since I was 16. Beautiful scenery, especially in the Fall. The New River Gorge Bridge Festival is really nice to see. People come from all over the world to jump off this bridge with their parachutes. As fast as they jumped off was as fast as the next bus load unloaded & they'd jump. Looking down at the people were floating on inner tubes. They closed the N bound lanes down during the festival. It was neat! This video was beautifully done Russ! Have a good week!👍

My husband repelled off the bridge a number of years until he was 69 years old. It was one of the many highlights of his life.

I live in Virginia, but grew up and most of my life in Hawaii. For some reason West Virginia and most of the mountain areas around there have tugged at my soul. I did one road trip through to Minneapolis for a family member's wedding. Most of those towns seem to grow out of any fairly wide space in the valleys. There is so much to see and explore that it seems like a lot of it is bypassed. The buildings and narrow roads make it hard to just stop anywhere. I am gearing up to do a few road trips this year if I can pull them off.

McDowell County where Welch West Vorginia is,the county back in 1950 had a population of around 100,000 in it's coal mining heyday, now the population stands at around 17,000,a big reason why there are so many empty buildings with some that nature is taking over now.I grew up Clarksburg West Virginia (I live in Florida now)but that's in the north central part closer to the Pennsyvania line, that downtown reminds me of Bluefied with all the tall old buildings.
