@@flashingsword Noble Science is a different club. I used to be a member. If you are participating in their tournament be aware they stacked the tournament in favor of binding techniques. 4 points (same as the head) to a hit to the upper arm which is an area which gets hit frequently when fencing from the bind. In a completely unrelated note, binding techniques are the only techniques they practice at Noble Science.

@@TurulHEMA Nobody that I regularly spar with is very bind-centric. I'll have to work more on working from the bind, but I get that they would want to encourage the techniques they'd like to see more of.

I agree. People are far more complex and do not fit the simplistic and rigid structure of the animal kingdom which was presented here. I am aware of the inherently problematic nature of this video. Media can certainly normalize harmful behavior and beliefs such as objectifying women or giving the impression that HEMA should be male dominated. One of the greatest's strengths of the HEMA community is that it is inclusive and filled with very friendly people. It is, therefore, valuable to be cautious against things which may damage this culture. May I also note, that I am not 8ft tall. While there are some fencers in the HEMA community who are very tall, most are not. This may create an unrealistic expectation of height which may discourage otherwise would be practitioners. I will keep this in mind for future documentaries.

Jesus I’m as liberal as they come but this is just a preposterous comment 😂 if anything taking every word of this video seriously does a disservice to males by saying the only reason we fence is to try and impress females Holy shit I just realized I’m deeply offended! Take this video down RIGHT NOW I get where you're coming from though Laury, and I appreciate your sensitivity to the issue as I do think allies to non-binary people can be lacking in the community

​@@EarthStory In a lot of ways over-highlighting topics such as racism, sexism, and sexual orientation can be just as harmful. In our quest to reduce the prevalence of these issues people are being reduced to their unique identifiers. In order to prove you are not part of the problem people associate themselves with as many people as possible from X ethnic group, or Y sexual orientation so you they can virtue signal and parade them around as an example of how progressive they are. It's treating people like collectables.

​@@TurulHEMA Definitely, you see that all the time. But the "treating people like collectibles" mentality is not even close to as harmful as actual violence that say trans-people experience (we're talking multiples higher rates of assault, suicide, condemnation, etc). The overidentification happens because it is a part of society that is truly treated badly It's an annoying end of the "too liberal" spectrum, but is also used as an easy excuse to not be a staunch ally to these groups nor associate with their legitimate struggles

@@EarthStory of course it does a disservice to males as well, treating us as pack animals that must fight for dominance. That's all intrinsically linked to toxic masculinity and many other issues. You'll note I didn't ask for this video to be removed though, just highlighted a problem spot and asked for it to be reflected on in future videos. It's a funny video. I like David Attenborough. It also needs some context to be clear to people seeing hema from an outside perspective that were not all 'alpha dogs rawr fight me' type people and that non-males are, hopefully, welcome in our community. I understand the creator gets that and we're all good. Leaving it unsaid though is a disservice to anyone who finds this and for some reason thinks this is how some hema practitioners actually think. Sadly, some of them are right. We don't have a history of squeeky clean acceptance and tolerance. There are fewer and fewer corners of hema that are toxic trash bins of hoo-rah male power fantasy, but they exist still. So, if someone comes to this video and sees our conversation, well I just hope they see some of us see it for the humor and context still, and see that some of us also can see the problem and discuss it maturely too.
