HISTORY/ EVOLUTION OF EMO (1984-2022)

“Emo” is a label attached to artists that show a large dedication to expressing their personal life situations in an emotionally exaggerated way. This style of music was started in 1984 when Rites of Spring released their original demo which was filled with screams, emotional buildups, personal lyrics, and an overall filling/ sensitive sound. This strayed away from the hardcore punk scene at the time into something more passionate and personal as well as self-incriminatory. This genre would later become indie-infused over time with bands such as Split Lip, Sunny Day Real Estate, Dahlia Seed, Native Nod, and Cap’N Jazz bridging the gap from regular emocore to Midwest emocore.
In the 90’s emo became more experimental, with more screamo and Emoviolence bands starting up, and Midwest emo becoming the dominant sound. Pretty soon this second wave of emo would be popularized by Sunny Day Real Estate, the Get Up Kids, and Saves the Day.
The third wave of emo was its cultural and commercial peak with bands like Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, Brand New, and Saves the Day being played on the radio. However, this increase in popularity would introduce posers into the genre. Due to mall-goths on myspace and an overall misunderstanding of emo, mall-emo would be born and thus blur the meaning of "emo".
In the 4th wave of emo, bands would return to the sounds of the second wave with more twinkly indie rock/ math rock guitars and whiny vocals. Keeping true to the original definition of emo, bands like Midwest Pen Pals, Snowing, Algernon Cadwallader, and the Hotelier would have emotional lyrics, sensitive sound, and emotional buildups. However, past this the lines get blurred further into the 5th wave where electronic music goes emo(?), but I'll just stick to the first four waves for now.
Yes, emo rap does exist. "XXXTENTACION - Al.one" and Nothing,Nowhere are two great examples.

This is an evolution of emo music in general (Emocore, Indiemo, Screamo, Emo-Pop, Twinkledaddies, etc.). I'll make videos on each subgenre in specifics in the near future. Anyways, where the heck do these derivatives come from? Emo-core: Black Flag -> (DC Hardcore) -> The Untouchables/ The Faith -> Rites of Spring & Embrace & The Hated Indie-Emo: Rites of Spring -> Moss Icon & (midwestern hardcore & alt-rock) & The Hated -> Gauge -> Cap'N Jazz & Sunny Day Real Estate Screamo: Rites of Spring -> Moss Icon & Merel -> Sleeping Body & H/roin & Honeywell Emo-Violence: Honeywell & Sleeping Body & (California Powerviolence) -> Palatka & End of the Century Party Emo-Pop: Rites of Spring -> Jawbreaker -> Monsula Indie-Screamo: Cap'N Jazz & H/roin -> Sidekick Kato Twinkledaddies: Cap'N Jazz -> American Football & Saetia -> Make Me

They're a good band, but Gerard said it himself that they were more influenced by gothic rock/punk. The most emo band they took influence from is Pencey Prep. MCR isn't emo because its clearly punk/ pop-punk/ post-hardcore/ whatever, but Pencey Prep took influence from Saves the Day, TGUK, Dashboard Confessional, and Weezer's Pinkerton.

Mid to late 90s/2nd wave emo is my favorite, something about the clean guitars juxtaposed with the vocals and the other instrumentation always spoke to me. And it’s crazy that that particular style fuels the current wave. Mineral, Joan of Arc, The Promise Ring, American Football, Jimmy Eat World, and Penfold are some of my favorites. While I dont hold a negative view towards the later waves as it also has many bands that I’ve come to enjoy very much, as someone said before I also think the scene years left a sour taste in my mouth.

@@EMOtiveHXC They're at least fans of 80s emo, and they really do refuse to listen to even the most iconic bands of the 90s like Texas is the Reason. Some guy on one of those old evolution videos told me Mineral wasn't emo and that they're actually "pop punk" despite not actually sounding like pop punk. It's funny how they'll claim no bands from the 90s are actually emo but they also mislabel those bands to other genres that they know nothing about Well, yeah, one of the problems though is that these are the same people who refuse to accept that hardcore in general has changed a lot. I don't particularly care for a lot of it but modern hardcore really does equal breakdowns and screams (not like metalcore either, I mean like the Have Heart influenced bands). But just because I'm not a fan of spin kicking and snapbacks, doesn't mean that's not what hardcore culture has been for the last couple decades. And it's not like these attitudes I'm describing are small either. These attitudes have been greatly holding back rock and metal for a very long time. It's hard to have fun at a local punk show when half the punks are irritating nerds who act like dicks when you talk about music you like. It really does divide any "scene" that could exist and makes rock and metal seem like hostile and pedantic nerd bs
@EMOtiveHXC

@@cummywummy2896 wall of text, but I read thru it… Texas is the Reason “isn’t emo” according to FourFa, but that’s like the only 90s emo band he excludes (plus his website is kinda wonky). Just remember a lot of those 90s bands took influence from SDRE, Cap’N, and Moss Icon. Even if not “emotive hardcore”, it’s emotive and post-hardcore from people who were active in the hardcore scene. And you’re completely right, emos don’t mosh. Hah! Emo began in 1980s! Some of the kids in a short were saying emo wasn't even a thing in the 90s, they werent even a thought back then
@EMOtiveHXC
@EMOtiveHXC 6 месяцев назад
LMFAO. All those kids don’t know that the bands they listen to basically rip off the bands making the exact same sound in the 90s albeit with less notoriety. And THOSE 90s bands were inspired by straight-up hardcore and of course bands like Fugazi and Moss Icon

@@EMOtiveHXCThanks for the reply. Its sad that people only perceive emo as the 2000s hot-topic, black hair-covers-half-the-face thing and not the entire plethora of music that was there since the 80s! Regardless, enjoyed watching your video.

2008 on is so damn good, then we hit modern baseball and its kind of eh and then mom jeans and so forth and its really abysmal but now with bands like home is where, record setter, vs self etc. good times are upon us.

Thanks for creating this. Fun to remember all those old "emocore" bands. You forget Ian Mackaye had a hand in yet another important movement. Genuine guestion...how about Dag Nasty? Definitely to me more emotional lyrics than straight up hard core. Thoughts?

Dag Nasty is hardcore. They were known for dunking on emo bands

@Emotions & Suburban Housing I just relistened to them a bit. Hardcore moniker makes sense. I never knew about them dunking on emo bands. Glad i stopped listening to them. Really stuff like that is why I stopped listening to Hardcore. Thank for the reply!

@@jamesnoel3827 They called those bands “emocore” and they hated it. Emo has always been an insult lol

@Emotions & Suburban Housing I do recall now that the emocore moniker was meant as a slight. I didn't understand the mentality then nor now. Luckily I still have my original Embrace lp! Just listened to it after seeing this a forgot how good it was.

Was a lot better in the late 80's to early 90's when they sounded like Minor Threat and Fugazi. Seems like the sound went a different direction in the late 90's.

Pretty sure most of those 90s bands were inspired by Fugazi

I was losing hope around 2014-2016 and then it started getting better again around 2020 or 2021. . . Is emo about to make a comeback? Something tells me it never fully will, but that'd be awesome if it did. I had no idea people were still making music like this. I've been so busy raising humans . . .

Not normally one to comment, but I gotta be that one supporter of Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) because he's more under the radar compared to the other bands (not like there's even more overshadowed but he's more less talked about) but his sounds hit in a weird way that makes me addicted, I don't know any other band similar to how he made it so far. He even started releasing again under Mt. Oriander after coming from the disbanding of Empire! and still has the same energy as when he left imo.
