How to Hit the Ball Then the Turf EVERYTIME - Simple "Low-Point" Drill!
The most basic skill all golfers need to learn is to control to “low-point” of the swing, or where the bottom of the swing arc is.
For expert players, this is ALWAYS after the ball with all shots struck from the ground. For the average amateur golfer, the bottom of their swing arc is all too often BEFORE the ball, causing FAT shots, THIN shots and TOPPED shots.
There is a strong correlation between a golfer’s ability to control of the swing’s low-point/arc and their handicap. This is because controlling the low-point results in more consistent contact, which results in more predictable distance making it easier for you to hit the ball closer to your intended target.
Practicing this skill is often overlooked as it seems so simple and obvious, but are YOU really spending enough of your practice time and focus developing this vital skill?
A huge factor influencing the ability to hit the ground AFTER the ball every time, is the location of a golfer’s weight thought the swing. In this video I will share a very simple drill that will highlight your ability (or deficiency) when it comes to successfully controlling the low-point of your swing and allowing you to hit the ball then the turf, EVERYTIME.

I have my practice mat set up with the GRID using the T Claws and I cut the Divot board right into the mat so it’s all at the same ground level. I practice this drill often and it is a struggle to hit it well more than 6-8 times in a row. At first it was shocking feedback of only hitting the correct spot 1-2 times in a row.

Consider this: At setup, position the bottom blade of your iron at the middle of the ball. Takeaway, shallow your wrists and take your swing focusing on low point in front of the ball. This has helped me make ball first contact frequently and the low point out in front for some great shots. A real "ah ha" moment for me.

Found your channel through the Saguto Golf members forum. I have a Divot Board and love it - I do need to use it more though. Since I started S&T my success with hitting then ball first has improved tremendously, but I am still probably only around 80% so I'll be trying these drills tomorrow. I like the idea of using the box along with the Divot Board. Should help provide a little more focus. I also like using Birdie Balls with my Divot Board since they don't roll off the board and still give you a nice feeling at impact and don't fly more than 40 yards or so. I have been using them for over 10 years now and they are by far my favorite training aid....with the Divot Board being number two. Great drills brother and I look forward to checking out more of your videos. Will be nice to have another perspective on using S&T. Cheers.

I tested this past weekend and below were my steps when on a hitting mat at the range, no plush driving ranges where I'm at yet. 1. Place impact tape a clubhead behind the ball, the same tape I use for my driver, as it will show where my club hit if I do hit the tape(if on the upper part of the tape that tells me I was outside) 2. I then placed my ball on the smallest rubber tee so I have a consistent distance between the ball and tape 3. Then tested on my 9 iron and only doing the quick/stop drill, this really helped me feel the compression and groove that low point 4. I did go slow initially, but once I sped up my half swing I got up to 8 times before hitting the tape 5. I kept doing this until I reached 10, then I would hit one full shot without the tee, and start over until I reached 10 again Results: On that full shot I didn't know my ball could go so high and far. When my ball went high before it was due to ballooning as I was getting too much spin but now it's hitting higher in the face making the sweet spot do the work. The ball speed increased by almost 10mph without straining too really hit at the ball, and instead I'm hitting through the ball, which resulted in a 20+ yds increase. I've only done up to an 8 iron but my next session I will start with an 8 and try to work up to a 6. I've also booked myself an appointment at a local Golftec, unfortunately no certified SnT coaches near me, but I thought this would be the next best thing. Cheers!

@Alan_Edwards
@Alan_Edwards Год назад
I saw a tip once about hitting down on the ball and it really messed me up. In my opinion it is one of the worst concepts to have as a swing thought (if you noticed Rob never mentions hitting down on the ball - just the low point). The club is already going down and has a low point. All that really needs to be done it to have that low point in the right place. Maybe hitting down works for you, but if you just started doing that I strongly suggest you stop - it can permeate through your swing and cause some undesired results. Get a Divots Board or use one the other tips mentioned here to move your low point and forget about hitting down. Trust me on this one Karen.

Sadly it seems so obvious to hit the ball up in the air - when learning in the garden my dad kept saying “don’t ruin my grass!” I therefore, unfortunately had to learn to try to hit completely clean shots which only happens perfectly one in ten. I bedded in that thought and to this day feel bad about messing up the fairway with a divot! I therefore use mostly woods, up to an 11 wood! I believed too that irons would get stuck in the ground when trying to take a divot. I love S & T - it just makes sense. Now I just have to give in to the thought of LOW point forward. I did purchase a divot board. Just wish I could use it on the course on each shot to save the grass. 😂 Thanks!

Thanks for the video - very clearly explained. I will certainly try this as I've been topping my irons a lot the last couple of years and struggling to fix it. Two questions:- 1) Does the one grip length apply no matter what iron you are using - 3 iron all the way to pitching wedge? I thought you needed a more shallow angle of approach into the ball with a long iron. 2) With this drill is it possible you may end up picking up the club too steeply on the way back to avoid the box of balls and would this cause you other problems?
@deise5989
@deise5989 2 года назад
@@golftecasia Thanks one more question if you don't mind. This drill is all about stopping hitting the ground before the ball - clearly that leads to hitting it heavy rather than topping it where I always thought you were getting the ball first just not enough of the ground. How does it fix the topping? Is it that it forces a steeper descent into the ball?

Id have to disagree with NH Krugers advice. To me this is an extension of Phils hinge and hold chipping style that he extends out to 50 yds. Instead this extends it to full range. I went to my club today and tried this at the range and a big improvement in my accuracy. Decided to play a few holes and it took a few shots to tune it in, but on the second par three 158 yds downhill, i typically hit a 9. Did that today with this method and flew the green, 175--180 with a 9 iron and beautiful ball flight directly over the pin. So not sure why one needs to get a full extension on a take away? This method perfectly sets your lag and strikes the back of the ball on a sharper downswing. Will continue with it see if i can improve my distance consistency. Thanks for the video.. btw, im a 66yo. Used to be a 12 hcp, but quit golf for 20 yrs and trying to get my game back, but its not like riding a bike...17 and dropping :)

@@golftecasia the video at beginning of this video is indeed a fabulous swing. But he is not snap hinging his wrists and avoiding anything on the backswing. He is in fact low and slow. Slowing down the speed of this video clearly shows he does not achieve 90 degree set until aprox shoulder height whereas you are already set fractionally above your knees. Its very difficult to explain in a few words why an extremely early set is an awful practice but just be sure it is. It encourages an extreme inside path and destroys tempo, ratio and subsequently balance. The biggest culprits of bad turf interaction is sway away slide on takeaway and excessive setup tilt. Getting the head to sit more level naturally steepens the backswing and makes a hitting down on the ball possible without artificially introducing a compensation
