Hitler-Loving Trump Can't Be Trusted With the Military! 

I will never forget Trump calling John McCain a loser for being a POW. "I prefer winners." I didn't love John McCain's politics, but I had so much respect for him as a war hero.

When I joined the United States Air Force one of the first things I was taught in Basic Training was that we had a legal and ethical obligation to DISOBEY an unlawful order.

WOW.That remark about the deceased female soldier at Ft Hood was disgusting. And not paying for that poor child's funeral was in very poor taste. Can't believe this douche bag was ever our president and may be again.

I’m less concerned with those who ignore his statements. I’m frightened of those who *defend* his rhetoric.

His supporters-who proudly proclaim “support the troops”-will completely brush this aside.

I'm physically disabled and a first time voter. I walked 2 miles in 88 degree heat and stood in line for 40 minutes to vote for Harris/Walz today. We can discuss specific policy later. Right now, our first priority is to preserve the ability to have those discussions. I will not let this great experiment become North Korea. No matter how much my body hurts. I'm German but one thing my Grandfather pointed out over and over again might be relevant in the US, too. Don't forget, Hitler was democratically elected! Vote wisely. Disclaimer, I was drafted into the armed forces of the Federal Republic (I.E. western) Germany and then stayed in active duty for 8 years and another 8 in the reserve. I enjoyed an open and liberal (in a sense of freedom) democracy since I was born and many died so I could and can be free! I hope I did and still do my part to keep it that way.

You forgot you can tell how Trump feels about the military by the way he acted at Arlington.

I was stationed at Fort Hood when Vanessa Guillen was murdered, the only reason it got as far as it did is because her family went to the media. Command was going to sweep it under the rug. Afterwards, during the search for Vanessa, they ended up finding the bodies of two other soldiers who had gone missing in years prior, one of which had been labeled a deserter, which means that soldier's family had not been receiving benefits they should have received. The handling of the Vanessa Guillen situation was disgustingly poor

I was in Djibouti when Donny ordered the pullout of Somalia. His attempts at hurting the next administration by using the troops was sickening. Not sure why that isn't mentioned very much.

Trump demands loyalty, but it will only ever flow in one direction.

No we cannot because he is obsessed with power. He MUST be held accountable for all the crimes he committed against the American people.

When I retired in 2014 after 23 years split between two branches, I wanted to be able to proudly hang my retirement orders on the wall. I'll give you three guesses as to who signed my order (with an automated Sharpie), and the first two guesses don't count. I'll never hang that piece of paper in my home-not with that signature on it. Instead, it's in a folder on a pile of things I'll eventually get to. Vote blue, up and down.

When I enlisted in 2017, my only reservation was that I knew Trump would be my Commander-in-Chief. It baffles me how any service member can still vote for this man.

His statements about POWs and MIA soldiers also very neatly explains why he did not pardon any of the traitors who attempted to overthrow the government on his behalf on January 6. In his eyes, they failed, so they are worth less than nothing to him.

My father died at age 69 of colon cancer in September 2017. He was a lifelong progressive Democrat, a Vietnam era veteran, worked for 38 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs in NYC, and devoured every book on US and other history he ever saw. A regret of his was not having become a history teacher. Trump had been president for just under a year at the time of my father’s death, and one of our last conversations was about how awful Trump was, about three days before he died…Labor Day, to be exact. I would love nothing more than to see my dad again so please don’t misinterpret this: I am so glad he’s not alive to see all of this. It would kill him. 😔✊🏻🇺🇸

Steve, I'm a retired Navy officer. Here are some interesting facts: to make your arguments stronger: 1) Active-duty military in Federal service are not allowed to arrest civilians and engage in some other law enforcement activities according to the Posse Comitas Act of 1878. Generally, the other exceptions are the Coast Guard (as part of DHS) and the National Guard while in state service. When I was in the Navy, I was the Base Security Officer at GTMO for a year. When the Coast Guard brought in suspected drug boats, my Sailors were not allowed to guard the prisoners without a Coast Guard escort. Often, the Coast Guard had to fly in a detachment so the Coast Guard cutter could go back to sea. 2) Mark Felton, who does documentaries about WW2 and its aftermath, just did a video about how Hitler had a slush fund to bribe his generals and admirals and keep them loyal. That's how he kept them in line. Also, Hitler forced them to be Nazi party members and swear a personal loyalty oath to him. 3) Often military personnel become POWs through not fault of their own. Often, they were circumstances beyond their control. Try evading the Vietnamese Army in the jungles of North Vietnam after being wounded when your jet gets shot down like what happened to John McCain. George Washington, Andrew Jackson, and Winston Churchill were all POWs when they were younger.

I was raised in a fundamentalist JW household that believed in maintaining political neutrality (as if that isn't a political statement in of itself). I still live with family...and I'm a trans person who can't come out because I live with them. It took me a long time to work up the courage to register to vote (because they'd kick me out if they knew), but I live in NC. He already fostered an environment where the joint chiefs were willing to defy his orders. This is a dangerous precedent, there's a good reason ultimate authority of the military is in the hands of an elected official and even though it's 100% justified it's a bad habit for the military to get into. When we talk about lasting damage, this is one of those instances.

My dad, my brother, and my niece have all served our country in various branches of the military, and as far as I know, they are (or have been) all Republicans. Yet, none of them would vote for that "man". I am a progressive, and I wouldn't vote for a Republican if you put a gun to my head. BTW: I've already voted for Harris.

I can remember feeling a very real, nauseating thrill of horror when hearing Conway say “alternative facts” in 2017. It was shocking and painful. Since then, the firehose of BS has callused my mind, and the despair for the US has become a low ache that I can work around. The story about the funeral with the order “Don't pay it” actually rattled me for the first time in a while, though. I had tears in my eyes while I was driving my car and listening to this. The man is a rotten son of a bitch. The America I grew up in is dying. Let’s save it, please!

Can you imagine being in the service and then finding out someone was just elected to the presidency who said he was going to be dictator and get rid of the constitution? A person you can be sure not only doesn't value your life but will look for ways to use you as a weapon against your own family and neighbors.

I am comforted by one very important detail in the military chain of command: any service member, regardless of rank, has the right, and responsibility, to refuse an ILLEGAL order, from any person above him in that hierarchy. Up to and including, of course, the sitting President. So, if the President declares a state of emergency after a hurricane, he can order any troops he deems necessary, and no general, captain, etc is gonna blink. But ordering a squad to fire live ammunition into a crowd exercising their First Amendment..... yeah, the Joint Chiefs will have every right- I would argue, 'an obligation'- to tell POTUS to bugger off.

I wonder what Trump's Jewish son in law thinks about Trump idolizing Hitler. I wonder what Trump's daughter thinks about her father idolizing someone who would have killed her husband. Do you think they will vote for him? What about his immigrant wife, since we know how he feels about all immigrants? His niece, Mary Trump (Media) has a youtube channel campaigning against him.

I come from a family of veterans and federal employees; I could not serve in the military, myself, so I took the second option, for exactly the same reason: to serve in my own way. I have been a public servant my entire career, and I advocate for the public in all my daily activities. Trump and Project 2025 would make me and my companions at-will employees, when they have no idea what we do day-in and day-out. I stand with my military and public servant family, and I support first responders, teachers, and unions, for the same reasons. Thank you, Steve, for your support.

I could not agree more. The man wants to be a king, not a president. He either does not know basic civics, or a more scary thought, he knows the rules and breaks them intentionally.

All of this is completely believable after what he said about John McCain as well as the Medal of Freedom/Medal of Honor.

I believe soldiers are allowed to refuse illegal unconstitutional orders, but it would take a strong soldier/unit to refuse them.

Soldiers aren’t left behind just for their own sake, but because leaving someone behind would break the morale of the entire unit.

So I want to be clear, the department of veterans affairs will reimburse all expenses related to burying a military person. That's regardless of if they are active, guard, reserve,or honorably discharged. Burial and headstone in a national cemetery are free. So yeah. And I've been involved with the military for 40 years between serving myself and having an active duty spouse who was retired when he passed.

Rule of thumb: in war, there are rarely good guys. However, in the vast majority of cases the defenders are the closest thing to the good guys in a conflict.

I served 2009-2015 and I deployed in 2012. When it came time to renew, I didn't. Part because I had to take care of myself, but the other part was I wouldn't be willing to serve under Donald Trump. Turned out, he would have made it worse for me.

Both of my grandparents (and one of my great uncles) fought for the US in WW2, and I know that they'd be against Trump, and at the very least, I want to honor them (even though I wouldn't vote for him anyways).
