In this clip, John and Yoram Hazony discuss the cause of declining support for nationalism in the West. Hazony makes the case this is primarily a consequence of the erroneous conflation between national socialism and nationalism.
Philosopher, scholar and political theorist Dr. Yoram Hazony joins John for a rich and interweaving conversation about conservatism, nationalism, democracy and modern politics. Dr. Hazony, who has recently completed books on several of these topics, provides a compelling critique of the political right - where has gone wrong, the great benefits it can convey for society and how it diverges from liberalism.
John and Yoram touch on many important topic areas, including multiculturalism, identity politics, globalism and why nationalism seems to be surrounded by an unearned air of controversy.
Yoram Hazony is an Israeli philosopher, Bible scholar and political theorist. He is President of the Herzl Institute in Jerusalem and Chairman of the Edmund Burke Foundation. He has written several books, including The Virtue of Nationalism (2018) and his latest, Conservatism: A Rediscovery (2022), which have both met popular and critical success.
Educated at Princeton University (B.A. in East Asian Studies), and Rutgers University (Ph.D in Political Theory), Yoram founded and was the first editor of Princeton’s conservative student journal, The Princeton Tory, while still an undergraduate. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife Yael Hazony. They have nine children.

There is a book written in 1960 about all this. The Nazis had diaries and recorded much of their lives and ideology, day by day. Basically lie, lie, lie, propaganda, violence, intimidation, feigning peace talks, and pure ruthless brutality.

Germany was by far the most effective and well trained fighting force in the world at that time. Their technology was also the best. It took a near total world effort to defeat them and should (if we care to look closely) prove who the money power was then, and today.

The political theory was to tell the nation that they deserve better and to find an enemy to blame, so that all the nation would be united. Additionally, he managed to built a cult of himself as an omnipotent dictator and centralised the decision making for everything, including the economy. I would add however, that it was a different kind of centralisation than the top-down approach of the Soviet Union. In my opinion AH introduced something like the modern governance through values by repetitively proliferating values (many of them were anti-values from our perspective) and letting the government as well as normal people to fulfill these values in the best way they could. That created a kind of a competition of ideas and solutions around AH, in the end leading to the worst things ever witnessed in the human history.

I don’t really agree with Mr. Anderson that nationalism has now fallen into disrepute. It was certainly the case for a long time that it was in disrepute, also here in Sweden 🇸🇪. However, over the past couple of years nationalism has become more popular here in 🇸🇪 and even liberals are trying to co-opt it by saying they are ‘liberal’ nationalists and recently the head of the Social Democratic Party here in 🇸🇪 came out saying she was a “patriot.”

I remember losing some "friends" when I read Adolf's book. I actually recommend reading and analysing it. Well, that is if you have two brain cells to smack together. You can learn how to use language and ideas to incite hatred, pull people together, and move their hearts. He often associates eww and icky words with a certain ethnic group (sorry for talking in riddles, RU-vid automatically deletes comments if it deems your language naughty). He says things like how bad they smell, how they don't like to bathe, and so on. I wonder if Adolf knew about this stuff instinctively or was just lucky, but modern science is clear that associated uncleaniless, disease and eww and icky stuff with people will make you feel moral / political and other types of disgust as well.

Sure, because words spoken by Haydn in the context of the German unification and words spoken by AH in the context of WW2 mean the exact same thing. Give me a break... If I buy a hoover and come home to say "this hoover sucks", what do I mean? Depends on whether it's broken, doesn't it? Thus, context is everything.

@peterwebb8732
@peterwebb8732 Год назад
Not necessarily true. The world is connected and it is not a zero-sum game. Therefore you can love your nation while simultaneously accepting the truth that the interests of your nation are often best served by having due regard to the interests of others. Trade and alliances are good examples. You give something you have, to get something you need, and both parties are better off.

There is another term out there and it's 'PATRIOTISM', which is almost an equivalent. I just realised that in the US no one is calling themselves nationalists and almost everyone is claiming to be a patriot - is brilliant as there's absolutely no bad connotation to this word! There might be a slight meaning difference as patriotism implies the state while nationalism - a nation (which used to be interpreted as race during II WW). In the end the practical use is the same so why don't we switch to the more positive word?
