In 2012, HM Queen Elizabeth II granted a Royal Charter to the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. HM King Charles III (as HRH The Prince of Wales) hosted a reception to celebrate the occasion, on 15th May 2012 at St James’s Palace, London.
In his speech, King Charles describes the Charter as a truly historic award, ‘the first Islamic organization to be so honoured in the long history of this country’. He emphasises the Centre’s role in promoting a more informed understanding of Islamic culture and civilisation, and notes that it is only from such understanding that can we increase the dialogue, respect and tolerance which underpin our national values.
