In this video we catch up with Aaron Hughes and Andy Hornby at HM Racing and we spend a few hours with them while they complete a first start and heat cycles on one of their 1972 Honda 500 fours.
Aaron and Andy will be travelling to the Isle of Man shortly to take part in the Senior Classic on their two 1972 Honda 500 fours.
Some notes from Aaron on the engine build:
- 64 bhp on the dyno at the end of the day
- crank lightened and balanced
- stock cam re-ground and profiled by Kent Cams
- standard 56mm bore with billett pistons
- Arrow con rods.
- 4.5mm valves stems.
- Serdi Multi angle cut valve seats.
- Nova gearbox and dry clutch.
- Ignitech total loss electronic ignition.
- Keihin CR 29 Carbs running 108 main and Y1 needle
- 0.5mm skim on the cylinder

Fun video! The '72 500-4 was my first bike. I did not explore its potential by a long shot. It's cool to see these guys going for it ... I hope we get to see the bike when it's 'track ready.'

Excellent video and fascinating look into the involved process that follows an engine rebuild in preparation for the TT. Is that Dave's tube of WELLSEAL making a cameo appearance at 20:40 in the video? ;) Brilliant work by Aaron and Andy, thanks for sharing a behind the scenes look with us. Good luck with the bikes!

Did you check the number of fingers on your hand after using that rag on the oil leak, so close to the final drive chain 😅. Love those small capacity Honda fours, in the '80's I had a 400 four as a daily rider, for a few years and a 750 four for the weekend special. Both ultra reliable, particularly after owning British bikes for years (since 1960, yes, I'm old) before. Did I mention oil leaks?
