You won't get anywhere near the amount you do with the DIY version so not ideal for breeders, etc but a nice option for the casual hobbyist that just wants to feed some BBS. Hope you enjoy it anyway.

I've been air pump bubbling in a tall glass jar with a light up until now, this looks so much better and easier. Setting up a light and an air pump has always been such a hassle. Don't know how I missed this video. Great review Daniel and a super little product!!

I have one too, but mine didn't come with a salt mix, I just use non iodized sea salt. I think I like that better because I warm up a little water and then add 3 teaspoons while it's still in the cup, then I can stir it in real easy, pour it in and top up to the line with a little more water. I get it to wherever it's gonna sit so I don't have to move it, moving it will slosh some eggs into the basket, and add 3 scoops. For anyone new, adding extra will hurt your yeild, what I've found anyway. The temps are important too, I just open the vent in my room and keep it warm in there. It seemed a little expensive when I bought it, but a big part of the price is the eggs it includes, anyone thinking about this definitely GET IT! It rules! So easy and there's nothing better you can feed your fish, will get them some better color right away!
@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish 4 года назад
Some real good tips and feedback you added there, thank you. I didn't get the mix with it either, I had to grab that separately but I'll definately experiment with it and come up with some different ways of playing with it like you have. Great little toys though aren't they? I just love that they can be very simple but effective for the casual hobbyist but more experienced fish keepers can tinker with them and still get some added interest out of them too. Great little toys for producing a food source that is so good for our fish.

Just bought this due to your video, I do realise it’s 4 years old. Was hard to find one in Australia, first one I ordered via Amazon in Germany, never arrived, so I got a refund and ordered the only other one on Amazon via the UK, and it arrived today, I just set it up! I bought one of those betta heaters, that are designed to sit a fish bowl on top of, so hopefully it works well enough, and doesn’t get too hot. Will see how it goes. Was using DIY bottle, but for some reason, I wasn’t get much of a harvest lately and way too many shells were ending up in my tank, so looked for a better way and this seems to be it!

@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish 4 года назад
Thanks very much homes. You may be able to harvest more at a time with those Jehmco ones but for me they're a bit more involved so for your average fish hobbyist just looking for a few at a time I feel like these are ideal. Plus they're a little more discrete and tidier than the larger setups so if space or shared living arrangements is a factor they get another wee point there too. I got mine from Amazon by the way bud.
@AquariumWizard
@AquariumWizard 4 года назад
I purchased this disk from Brine Shrimp Direct and my sample of cysts that I got were seperate. I feel this makes a huge difference in the use of the disk for small fry that might choke on the cyst shells. I mix up the water first within the container with my own mix that I have tinkered with, then gently place the eggs in the outermost ring. No shells whatsoever! It's awesome and this is all my killi fry will eat so I'm constantly using it. It's held up real well, I love it. Great choice!
@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish 4 года назад
They're great aren't they? I made a mistake setting it up and moving it. That's how the cycsts made it into the centre. I learned my lesson from that. Now I place it where it is going to sit before adding the cysts and eggs mix which works fine. The way you do it is another step up and sounds the perfect method though. Perfect food for your Killifish fry. I bet you are breeding some beautiful fish. Hopefully you'll show them on your channel at some stage, I'd love to see them at some point.

Don't buy the salt/egg combos - super waste of money. Mix 1 tbsp salt (25 grams) with the bicarb pinch and shake in a one liter water bottle for the hatching solution. Buy good quality eggs and follow the directions. For a really good harvest, place a bright light over the center net for an hour or so. And no, DON'T JOSTLE THE UNIT or you get eggs shells in the batch. Cool product!

Optimal range is between 26 and 28 mate but my house is way way below that during the day when no one is in and over night which is why I put it on top of that tank. They will swim about for a while but they won't last long in fresh water. The fish snap them up pretty quickly. You can add them incrementally too. Just add some from the catcher at a time till you're confident on how many you're happy to add to the tank. @DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish 2 года назад
So you don't yet anywhere near the yield with this as you would with other versions so the other ones require the aeration partly due to having so many more shrimp present. This hatchery is more for smaller tanks, adding an interesting way of feeding your fish or just the occasional spawn of fry. If you have a full fish room or intend on a regular breeding project you'd be better off with other options. Hope that explains it.

@DanielKeepingFish
@DanielKeepingFish 4 года назад
Just because we don't want any egg casings in the middle section. They'll get into the tank when we harvest our baby brine shrimp then and some people say fish can choke on them. That's if you're using the pre-mix right enough. Nothing stopping us mixing the water, salt and baking soda, adding that to the hatchery then putting the eggs in. I just try to keep it easy as possible for the average and new aquarists but can always take things to the next level. Many happy returns for when your birthday comes. You know you need to rinse them off before putting them in.

The eggs? It's the salt and casings mix I use so that wouldn't work. I wash out the hatchery between each use. I've been using it for many months now with great results. Plenty of baby brine shrimp, no smell, no fuss. Think it's great. Unless I've picked you up wrong.

Daniel Keeping Fish Maybe fish like mollies guppy’s and other estuary fish are good but the continued feeding in some fish can be harmful. Don’t take my word for it. Check it out. I wish I could use something like that. But with the amount of fish and fry I have at any one time I need a five Galen bucket a week of baby and adult feedings.
