The combination of painting the hand print, the background music, and the "little fun handprint" commentary is perfect.

I couldn't agree more with "less is more". It's a crazy concept lol.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Well, it increases the negative space between the splatter (or anything like that) so it makes it stand out more. A black dot on a white screen is easily seen, a black dot on a black screen... Well. You get it. :)

I have been consistently using your blood staining method from the painted marble bases video (red pigment, hull red, bloodfest crimson and blood for the blood god) for all blood effects. You can't improve on perfect, but heck I can't wait to give this a shot too! I agree, it definitely needs the build-up of layers - not just bftbg out of the pot!!!

I seem to remember seeing a similar method in another video, though I don't recall if it was on your channel or not. Whatever the case, I agree that simply slapping on a glossy red paint is a bad idea; even for very fresh blood you still need to account for things like spatter, gravity and fluid dynamics, and other grisly things like skin and tissue build up. As gruesome as it might be, if you want to go *really* technical try watching some episodes of "Forensic Files"; in cases where there's blood evidence they always a pretty comprehensive explanation as to what kinds of attacks would results in specific blood spatter patterns. That handprint idea is amazing! I don't think I've ever seen that done before, but now I need to find something I can use it on because it *really* sells the narrative.

The logic of where the pattern would be is really important. I decided to throw some BFtBG on my Salamanders Assault Intercessors to cover up a mistake with the texture paint… I mean weather the minis. They all carry their chainswords in their left hand so they’d typically strike enemies to their left. Then I worked out based off the pose (since they’re all charging) where the strike would have happened and used my airbrush to fire a spray from the impact point. Given the weapon is splattery as anything I reinforced the spray with a few streaks in places for some variation to suggest a pistol execution or a close in struggle, but all focused on the left of the mini. The rest is pretty clean because if this is their initial charge straight out the drop pod they’re not going to be covered in the stuff, just on the side where they strike from.

Good video Vince but what I would do is put a little paint on the end of a brush and give it one little shot with the airbrush and splatter it all over...cause there is going to be blood in a lot more places than his apron...have fun! Thanks for sharing...
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Yeah, my thought was that he cleans himself, but doesn't bother with the apron, but it's a good point, if you are doing larger blood splatter, that is a great trick.

This advice is brilliant as always, Vince! Blood is so much fun to do. I've got Army Painter blood effects, but maybe I should give that Citadel BftBG a whirl some time. Their pricing galls me a bit, though, and I'm stubborn lol Any thoughts on Vallejo's Blood effect paint?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
It's okay, but I really would recommend the BftBG, the other option is the Green Stuff World blood, which also has some cool effects.

Any chance you can do a video on painting silver-white hair (something with maybe purple shadows instead of typical blue for a cold white?) and purple darkelf skin? I have been trying to find a good video on this but no luck.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
So I would check out the painting white hair video I did. I use grey/blue in the shadows, but if you just replaced it with purple, the technique would be exactly the same.

Ok, so how would you paint blood splatter effects on a warp spider telefragging into a space marine? I'm planning on painting the Artel w Spectral Spinner prime (it's a dope model you should look it up) in pristine white armor and blue accents like a phase spider in dnd. I wanted to add some blood splatter to make the model look more intimidating, but I'd imagine there would be quite a bit of blood.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Год назад
That is a very specific question! I would mostly use the same tactics here, but try to keep it very tight in the explosion area as though it's just happening. Keep it very fresh, there is probably a second video on exploding effects I should add. :)

Any chance of getting a how-to on Tribal/war paint? Any making it look magical, like on Bonesplitterz?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
I have had war paint on my to-do list for a while. I will see what I can do to get it to the top. The short answer is pigment mixed with a little colored paint and applied very dry so it looks rough and skips the deep recesses.

Very nice. I thought I know how I like to do my bloodstains but I learned something new which I want to add in the future. Thank you. Maybe you could do a video about painting black and white. With the Night of the Living Dead Kickstarter I'm planning to paint the models in b/w and maybe with a light tint of blue. I very much would love to hear your thoughts on that subject.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Yeah, it's really tricky, it's something that's been on my list for a while. Painting in black and white (like the TV) is more a challenge of greys with subtle tones. It's something I will certainly give a try at some point, I think a Chibi would be good for this for sure.

Vince, thanks a lot for this video. I do have a question. How would you combine techniques without over doing the effect unintentionally or messing the effects? I am talking about combing things like old rust and old blood on e.g. World Eaters. Cuz the colours are so close and the miniature relatively small, I find it difficult to judge the right colour pallet and the right amount of both techniques such that it does right to both effects, make them distinguishable for each other, but do not flood the model with either effects.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 года назад
So generally, always think in layers, work all the rust to where you are happy first, then you do the blood. Now, the key is going to be to have them overlap and have some areas that are just rust, some areas that are just blood and some areas that have an overlap of both. That way the colors vary and they look organically different.
@Krullio
@Krullio 3 года назад
Good to hear overlap is not a bad thing in this case! Gonna try it out and let you. Thanks!
@jimhedberg8843
@jimhedberg8843 4 года назад
Looks great! The first two colours could you please write them down so i can find the correct colours
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
It was a little dark brown and hull red. The hull red is specific, but any darker, ruddy brown will work as the first one for the very small dots.

Vince, would you do a hobby cheating where you paint the cloak of an eidolon? preferably with minimal airbrush use =D. Or is there a video that would already apply to something like that?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
I don't think I'll have the chance to cover that anytime soon. My best advice is to look at the wet blending videos I have done and I would go from deep blue to turquoise and some white in there, I would use thick paint and wet blend all of that together. Then I would do some light make-up brush dry brushing of the white. Then some very light glazing to bring it all together.

Why are your models often on square bases in your tutorials?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
I need something to stick them to for the working process and I have no other use for Square bases anymore, so they are basically just a model holder. I always do the bases separate, so I then pull them off this temp holding base and onto their final bases prepared separately. :)
