I just want to say that your channel is so great. I’m currently painting a wooden staff and surely you had a tutorial of wood. This channel is like an encyclopedia.

Vallejo 'smoke' wash is good for wood tones. Change the under color from greys, tans, or bright whites while using a dilution of this wash. [water or medium actually changes tonality as well]
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 лет назад
It's a good point, the smoke wash is nice and you can really play with the tones in lots of ways. I have seen craft people use various weathering inks and oils to stain wood (much like you would work with real wood).

It's taken a few videos, but you've now sold me on Zenithal highlighting, I'm just a bit nervous to do it with rattle cans (so maybe its time to get an airbrush!). Great video, hopefully I can get some intense wood over here in Munich... ha such a great name.
@VinceVenturella

If I could have one epitaph on my tombstone that I would be proud of, it would be "Stopped people from wasting their lives painting over black primer." ;) With rattle cans, it's not as precise of course, but still very useful, just having that light dusting of white over the highlight areas can make some painting very quick. You should be able to get the Scale75 without too much issue, they are generally easier to get in the EU than the states. Intense Wood, just the best.

Hey Vince) Hope you have had a chance to play with the new Scale 75 Instant Colors. This Sylvaneth approach should be fun with the Berserker range! Definitely grabbing some Inktensity though. If Instant Colors should ever become a regular supply item, be cool to hear your thoughts in a product review. Scott has a 2K challenge due June 30th, but my personal deadline is the New Moon in May. 🙂 So glad to stumble upon this video Vince. Delivered me from any doubt about my own process! 🙏

I missed the black wash step on my first attempt to recreate this and they came out with a perfect baby-poo tone, not quite what i was going for though. Second batch in the works hopefully it looks a bit more like wood and a bit less like my kids starfish!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Well, baby poo is certainly a valid color for Sylvaneth, that being said, yes, that dark wash is important for the depth.

great video! how does the vallejo wash compare to the GW nuln oil?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 лет назад
It's thinner and it dries more grey and is pure black (nuln oil actually has a little black in it). It's a different animal actually and something that I use on each model.
@catisarat

Hi I know this is an old Video but I am loving your work. If I wanted to make the wood effect look like older aged wood what greys would you recommend?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Really any grey will work, but something like Cold Grey from Vallejo would serve you will.

i have a lot of wood elves and i am going to paint the color of a tree called iron wood but i do not know what colors to use for this color and i will be using this color for their weapons only .

So looking at photos of it, it looks like a dark Black/Grey/Brown.

Great old video. Would you still use Vallejo dark grey wash or has it been replaced by Payne’s Grey ink?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 года назад
It's been replaced by Payne's Grey Ink. ;)
@griffglowen5555
@griffglowen5555 3 года назад
@@VinceVenturella thanks. I guessed you now use Payne’s Grey for shadows and black lining etc. Do you also wash whole minis with thinned Payne’s Grey in in the undercoat stage in the same way you suggest doing in this video?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 года назад
@@griffglowen5555 Very thinned down with water and flow improver and yes.

So I know it's probably obvious, but if somebody wanted to take this brown to a blacker more bogwood look, could you say what washes and dry brushes you would use?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
I would add some deep green/brown washes, like more layers of athonian camoshade, probably mixed with some nuln and agrax. I would basically keep the drybrushing the same, but play with successively darker and more recessed washes to bring in the deeper browns and black/greens. Some Vallejo Black/Green ink could also be useful when thinned.

@JosephJoseph-xp6tg
@JosephJoseph-xp6tg 7 лет назад
Vince Venturella I would like to see how you painted the next step after the wood tones like the greens. On a separate note, did you make those trees on the Allariel you painted?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
I will see what I can do when I go back to them. The short answer is a thin transparent green and a more pastel green, both in thin glazes over the under zenithal highlighting. Yes, I made the trees, they are made from twisted wire, with putty over top and then green stuff for texture. Check out the Terrain Tutor, he has several awesome tutorials on making them.
