I had the exact same thing happen to me today under the Hampton roads bridge tunnel, in between the two bridges in a pretty good current too, not a whole lot of fun.
I have a different hobie though, it uses the plastic tubes for the cord to run through instead of pulleys. I actually have an issue with one of those tubes separating from its collar on the up/down control as well as the cord letting go on the steering today. The kayak is an '08 16 footer, really too big for fishing I feel like and it's showing it's age. Thinking about just breaking down and getting a new hobie. Kid at the boat ramp today was showing me the new mirage drive on his... That sumbitch has reverse lol
I'm wondering if you could just tie the new cord to the end of the old line and pull it all the way through from the other end replacing the whole line. Luckily, mine hasn't broken yet but it's a 2015 PA12 so it's getting a bit on the old side. The whole pully system is confusing to wrap your head around for sure. You did great job and a lot good info in the video!
I think the knot between the two would get caught on something as you are pulling it through. Maybe try to fuse the cords together a different way. I am going to look into this. Thanks for watching.
So you're leaving each lines with a knot??!! Seriously? Why not tie a long monofilament line to the drum end line and pull it all the way out from the steering lever? Then tie the new line to the mono you pulled out. Then pull the mono line left sticking out of the drum end thereby pulling new line all the way through all the pulleys. Make a loop end to slip over the steering lever, and tie the drum end line as usual. Now you have 2 COMPLETE new, unknotted lines running through your boat. I replace mine every season! Takes 5 minutes tops.
Phil...I broke a line on the water yesterday...I tied it back together to get thru the day...will this method work with a line with a knot in it ? Also, Mine is a 2017 model and has the tensioner on it...how does the line work with that ?
