No, its probably the worst moment of this arc because Sanji got punched for being rational, proving this arc is irrationally hellbent character assassinating Sanji and its really annoying.
The studio screwed up when they added their own fanfiction flashback to justify Hody's hatred of humans. The entire point of Hody is that his hatred was TAUGHT. He never once faced discrimination. And for a bunch of fishmen supremacists, Hody and his little club have actually spent more time harming other fishmen than actual human beings!
I love Hody Jones as a villain because he is so trash- Humans never did anything to him. His hatred is not from his own experience, and it is so damn realistic. Taking on a grudge or hatred for someone or something 'you' have never seen or experienced yourself. Whatever backstory the anime added is just filler, not canon. Hody is just so empty and pathetic he filled himself with someone else's hate and did awful things "in the name of those that actually experienced the bad". Nothing is his own. Not his motivations, not his power. Just an empty shell pretending to fight for something greater.
A modern term would be "race hustler". Granted he goes a bit further by actually acting on it, but also he doesn't seem like the type to go full extermination route because that means he won't be able to capitalize or feel the hatred he revels in for himself anymore. I'm reminded of Planet of the Apes, especially the original movies, as he seems like the type to go enslaving the leftovers of the human population should he ever actually succeed.
But he had moments where humans attacked his friends, trying to enslave them. Thats not "never did anything to him". Remember the Arlong scene where Arlong saves Hodys friend. I dont want to excuse him, to be clear, its just that One Piece contradicts itself here, because later he tells a different story in that "big reveal" scene. They screwed it up. ^^
@@robertbretschneider765 anime only, so its not canon. Hody embodies the very thing queen otohime tried to prevent: children blinded by hate. So yes, they screwed it up, and by "they" we understand toei
He is the most generic One Piece bad guy architype, not to mention the most forgettable villain in One Piece. Heck, Kuro from the cat pirate is more memorable this Arlong knock off.
@@AINTGOING And, the aftermath of their overuse makes him look like a chump. Like, he and his gang ended up like cartoon villain whose plan backfired because of those meddling kids.
@@Ty-jc5qv it adds nothing, it actually takes away from the story, humans never did anything to Jones, that's the point, introducing a filler flashbacks giving him a reason to hate humans goes against what Oda wrote.
@@Ty-jc5qvthis does not add to the story, it directly takes away from the story and message. Racism isn't always caused by personal experienced truama, its taught and encouraged by other which Hody Jones symbolizes. The anime just completely takes away from that story, the same way Zeff went from eating his legg to survive so Sanji can live to the nonsense in the anime where he just doesn't eat at all but survives for all that time.
The whole point of Hordy is that humans never did anything to him. He is a product and embodiment of the hatred between fishman and humans. So of course the anime decided to add filler showing them almost being kidnapped.
29:18 I'm getting the feeling that it's a case of 'he hates her because she's pretty but always looked down on him' storyline. The 'hates and wants her at the same time' kind of a story'.
While it's for shitty reasonss. Your "personal connection" to the fishman situation has really been appreciated. FM island has a rep in the community for being one of the lower or more boring arcs. Which is a shame because there's so much important subtext. I've seen your appreciation for the arc blow most other react/OP tubers out of the water(pun half intended). So thank you, can't wait to see how you feel about the rest of fishman island!
Hordy Jones is your one dimension cartoon villain who hates for the sake of hating. He was not enslaved, attacked or oppressed he is just a huge ball of irrational hatred.
I mean that makes him believable, not cartoony or one dimensional. Do you think most racists and KKK members had individual personal vad experiences with other races? Most in fact don't and its a product of how they are raised and the people around them educating and teaching them.
@@FallenPhoenix-ml5mn No, it doesn't make him believable, he was never captured, enslaved or oppressed, he grew up with anti-human propaganda and used it as an excuse to fuel his own megalomaniac mindset which is every generic cartoon villain's mindset. Also, African slavery first began in Latin America and southerners brought it into the USA to compete with the British's East India Company but failed to the Industrial revolution in North America. They didn't just randomly woke up and decided to be irrationally racist against people from a different continent. Arlong felt othered by human while Hordy Jones was just a hipster punk.
@@SuperSky9 Again do you think every racist experienced bad experiences with that race to hate them? Its believable. Do you think the most racist areas in any place in every country where the race they hate are less than 10% of the population experienced any negative interactions with that race? No they did not. Most racists never has a negative experience with the race they hate, thats literally the norm and how its always worked and thats what makes it believable. Hordy jones is a racist, he never had a bad experience with humans but he is racist to them, thats believable and realistic. Tenesee was voted as one of the most racist areas in America, the black population is less than 17% do you think all those racists that live there has had interactions with that minority? No they did not.
Hody, I think you've had enough! When the addict is also a supremacist. The pills aren't explained too well, but every time he munches on 'em he's just been getting stronger and stronger (it's like constantly in his system). The water bullet is a good example for now compared to when he first shot it at Zoro. But yeah now we have who Hody is: A fishman who decided to take the ideals of others while (as far as we know) has had nothing happened to him. He's taken advantage of opportunities (arlong's name, the army, etc) to further his own agenda and gain power. A very empty villain, but all the while *very* fitting for the themes. Let's see if the straw hats can fight that power. Thanks for the video! (Wrote a lot this time...sorry! lol)
There have been other real world events similar to it, but since Oda is Oda, fair to compare Otohime's picture having to be stepped on to the historical Japanese example where the same thing was done with images of Jesus or Mary to have people prove they weren't members of Christianity, which was outlawed at the time.
29:26 Well if we're going to get technical Arlong was (is, we don't know if he's dead) her half-brother. From what I can tell Arlong got left at an orphanage (presumably the one that turned into fish-man district) by his dad when he was a kid and his dad then went off and then showed up at the same orphanage again years later when Arlong was roughly 15 and dropped Sharley (as a young girl) off and that's the last either of them ever saw of him. We reckon that for a while at least Arlong was willing to look after her but I guess as they got older they became too different and basically went their seperate ways. I don't know how much she knows about what Arlong got up to in the East Blue but I get the feeling she knew him so well that she didn't need her gift of seeing the future to make even a rough guess about what he did, and that if she was told she would be more disappointed that she was right rather than shocked to hear about it. We all agree though - that we all know what Arlong would have done if he was there and saw Hordy hurt her. We saw how angry he got when his crew members that he called 'brother' were hurt at Arlong Park, we saw how he attacked the navy when 'Big Brother' Tai was killed.......we can only imagine what he'd do to someone who hurt his actual sister...... Looking back now at the 'do mermaids poop' scene - don't tell me you can't see the resemblance between Sharley and Arlong in that moment when she became angry, when her teeth became sharp, her eyes became slits and she yelled "Don't you have any CLASS!!!"
Mr. Hoddy has watched too many James Bond Movies. Got the super slow dunking device and everything. However he forgot the sharks with lasers on their heads.
Characters appearing in ONE PIECE sometimes include elements of Michael Jackson. For example, Brook's 45-degree angle represents "zero gravity." There is a scene where Django moonwalks. Hody is one of them. It expresses the message of drug overdose. I think of Energy Steroids as an Earth Song(ES) that Michael Jackson released in his later years.
I recommend to watch GrandLineReview's video on Hody after you are done with Fishman Island :) It helps contextualize him and I like him quite a lot more since I watched it.
Shirahoshi knowing but not telling anyone SPEAKS so loudly about her character Her mom's last word were to never hold a grudge no matter who did it Human or fishman Because she knows that hatred would only be passed down And i'm sure she understood why she was shot as she failed to see the brewing hatred in her kingdom while focusing on the pure kindness of people, that killed her She's a clear mirror to Tiger who knew that kindness but couldn't accept it and let rage kill him. Beautifully written
@@KennyHedgehog The reason he sucks is because he was never enslaved but hates human and unlike arlong he doesn't care about fishmen so he is just a one dimensional cartoon villain who just hates for the same of hating.
Ppl hate when shirahoshi knew hordy was the culprit but not telling anyone's. I also hate it for like first 3 times of watching. I also felt if you had told somebody these things would not have happened. Hordy would have been gone. but after watching OP for a few times, I could understand her perspective and her choice not to tell anyone. and I really do think she did correct thing.
As the Queen said "There are Children around" Meaning your actions affect their view of the world and Arlong affected Hody's so badly to the point he never thought what he was doing was different from what Humans did but he does it worse. Right down to hurting his own people, not caring that some of his own followers are slave traders selling mermaids to humans He never faced discrimination in that part where the pirates tried to kidnap one of the kids in Hody's group was Anime Filler only. And trust me the extremes he will go to creating a Race War to justify one shark man's stupidity is nightmare fuel cus we have people like that in real life RIGHT NOW that get mad and shoot certain people for have a single day of not being oppressed no more doing the same
"i think you got enough!" i knew that bastard did it all along, most people would hesitate killing in cold blood, let alone a defenseless woman, but not that racist bastard Hordy! now the cat is out the bag and the Straw Hats will probably show up soon, when they do it'll be a fish fry! ngl, Jimbei annoyed me with the whole argument, the f*** does it matter if Fishmen hate on Humans for beating Hordy's ass? their kingdom is about to be wiped out by psychopaths, while their own crewmates are in peril, there's nobody else capable of stopping this, it's go time!
I hate all these comments saying about the reason of Hody's hate. It is stated in the bloody anime in about 10-15 episodes from now on. And it is a big reveal. So by saying " OH HODY IS LIKE THIS BECAUSE" is literal fucking spoiler.
So I just finished jojo stardust crusaders the other day and was wondering what u think about jojo compared to one piece...I really don't see the big fuss about jojo I think it's mid entertaining but mid..sorry I just couldn't get into it but I tried I made myself watch an ima keep watching other seasons to see if it gets better..I just think op has spoiled me
- I think you have enough. What happened to the crew? Let's hope Luffy beat that Hody guy ass soon, I'm getting tired of listening to him. Ussop's Robin impression always gets me 😆
Sadly I can't say I fully blame Sanji this arc. I probably wouldn't be able to control myself around Madam Shyarly. And she's apparently 17 feet tall/long/however you measure mermaids? The thirst would be real. Looking like the first big fight for the Straw Hats post-timeskip is going to be against a bunch of racist junkies, and a pedo that never washes his hands. NGL, kinda disappointing as far as arc villains go.
This whole stretch of Fishmen Island episodes is why i really dislike this arc. For one, Hordy and his henchmen as villians are just really lame, especially since they're just depending on some miracle steroid power boost drug. Jinbei trying to stop Luffy while not offering any solutions to rescuing the Strawhats makes 0 sense. Hachi/Jinbei constantly telling them to not get involved was highly annoying, as if they don't know who Luffy is(Hachi in particular). If they knew everyone there hated humans so much because of what happened, they should have made plans to meet the Strawhats at Shabody Archipelago and escort them personally or something.
For real. And I also don't even like that *SPOILERS BELOW* . . . . he's officially nakama, on the crew. I also can't see why Oda & Co. hyped it up so damn much when he joined too; he really hasn't had anything of REAL substance to add. At least no near enough to be on the Sunny. Wouldn't mind if he ended up with the Grand Fleet etc., because (so far at least) his list of accomplishments and abilities have been hella mid: - "Wow he sure can steer a boat!" - "Oh no, some ability users have fallen in the water! Good thing Jinbei swam down to get them!" (when Sanji or Zoro have done the same thing constantly through the story) - "He threw a bunch of water around Wano to put out a fire! Yeahhh! Nakama of the YEAR!" - "Sugei !! He can talk to FISH!" (So can Chopper, and even Luffy 'to an extent at least with the 'voice of all things' stuff) I liked him for earlier on; Jinbei was a much better character and far more interesting before he joined up with the crew and before Whole Cake. His peak moments occurred directly pre- and post- timeskip. Anything before and since then has felt like it's been shoe-horned into the story. His cover page stuff was more exciting even.
